It was only a mont of quiet, and Jane Sampson gradually fell asleep in Jas Black’s arms.
Because he was holding her, she couldn’t curl up, and, as she slept, her subconscious sought the most comfortable position, eventually looping her hands around Jas Black’s waist at so ti that probably even Jane Sampson herself didn’t realize.
In any case, when she woke up and opened her eyes, Jas Black saw her face pressed against his chest and her two hands encircling his waist, still sleeping soundly.
It was still not quite daybreak, around 4 a.m., the ti when people are in their deepest sleep, and Jas Black needed to be at the city bureau by five o’clock to et up with Peter Gingery and the others.
Jas Black gently moved the hand laying on him and got down from the bed. He only turned on the light in front of the restroom before going in to wash. By the ti he got dressed and ca out, Jane Sampson had changed her sleeping position. Without his constraint, she instinctively retreated to her own spot, curling up in her tiny corner.
Jas Black knelt one knee on the bed, lifted the person sleeping in the corner to the center of the bed, and then gently pushed Jane Sampson, calling her na.
Jane Sampson was groggy with sleep, slowly opening her eyes, which felt as heavy as a thousand pounds.
"Hmm?" Accompanying the not quite bright warm yellow light, Jane Sampson rubbed her eyes and glanced at Jas Black’s face, then blankly sat up. Her gaze fell unfocused on Jas Black’s face, and with a voice hoarse from just waking up, she asked, "What’s up?"
"I have to leave now. After I go, make sure you put the safety lock on the door, and rember to put dicine on your foot in the morning," Jas Black instructed.
It was then that Jane Sampson gradually beca more alert. Her hands resting on the quilt, she followed Jas Black’s movents around the room with her gaze. Seeing him putting on his backpack, she casually asked, "Will you co over tonight then?"
"Probably not. I’ll likely be out of City C this evening," replied Jas Black after he put on his backpack and returned to the bedside. "I’m going out for tasks. I probably won’t be able to get ho this weekend."
These words instantly jolted Jane Sampson’s spirits, "That’s good! That’s really good!"
This nearly slipped out before Jane Sampson, after saying it, smiled foolishly and rigidly laid back down, hugging the pillow that Jas Black had slept on, chuckling to herself.
That laughter actually made the man who was about to leave turn back again.
"You’re that happy?" Jas Black asked with a hint of gloom.
The air suddenly beca quiet.
And the answer to his question was the light snoring of Jane Sampson, pretending to be fast asleep. Jas Black sat there for a few seconds, finally unable to resist, bending over, pressing his body on top of the quilted one, pulled out her head from the nest of the quilt, and planted a kiss on her lips.
The person fake sleeping imdiately woke up, and the fact that Jane Sampson was just pretending to sleep didn’t seem to surprise anyone all that much.
Sitting next to her with a sowhat somber gaze, Jas Black asked, "Awake now?"
Jane Sampson nodded continuously.
"I might not co ho next week," Jas Black repeated.
Jane Sampson kept on nodding silently, just pulling up the quilt a bit to cover the lower half of her blushing face.
"I’m leaving," said Jas Black as he stood up. He hesitated for a few seconds, then threatened, "Still not talking?"
"Be careful on your mission," Jane Sampson finally managed to find her voice, then extended a small hand from under the quilt, waving at Jas Black.
