As Corey turned to leave to summon Lil’ Baem back from the void, her grimoire chid with a notification of an incoming call. She froze in surprise as she read the caller ID. The caller was a blast from her ignorant and shaful past. Beth Whiteburn.
She hadn’t stayed in touch with that side of her life for a long ti. Many of her old friends had tried to contact her before, asking her to introduce them to her boss. Every single one of them had been chewed out by her sharp-tongued self long before she beca one with the darkness within her titled demon core. Those bridges were burned.
Still, if she were the one to reach out, they would respond. After all, her boss was pretty famous.
Beth Whiteburn was one of the few remaining connections she still had to that shaful past. Corey hesitated, then reluctantly accepted the call.
"Hi, Corey. Long ti no see," ca her old friend’s voice, still carrying the sa childish tone she rembered.
"Hey, Beth—" Corey began, only to be cut off imdiately by the forr, "Are you with Master Wyatt? If not, can you help arrange a eting with my family? Don’t get wrong, this is about the Empire. Ah!"
"You idiot, what did Father tell us about revealing anything sensitive on the grimoire network? It isn’t secure," Amy Whiteburn’s voice ca through from the background. She then addressed Corey directly. "Corey, this is Amy. My family has important information and urgent news for Master Wyatt. Can you help us arrange an appointnt with him as soon as possible?"
"You guys have his contact ID, right? Why don’t you contact him directly, or talk to Big Sis Susan? She’s his manager, after all," Corey replied, puzzled. Unlike her other old acquaintances, the Whiteburn siblings weren’t just familiar with Wyatt. They were his old clients. They didn’t need her to introduce them to him.
"That wouldn’t be proper etiquette," Amy said. "Wyatt is a demigod now." The misunderstanding was understandable. After all, the whole world had watched him fight and defeat demigods on more than one occasion on live stream.
"He is not a— fine. I’ll talk to him and get back to you imdiately," Corey said, cutting herself off. She ended the call and turned, glaring at her asshole boss, who was watching Bloodette who was lying face-down on the blood-red floor and crying loudly.
"Wyatt!" she called out sharply, then inford him, "Beth and Amy Whiteburn called. They said their family has important information and urgent news about the Empire that they need to share with you, and they asked to help arrange a eting as soon as possible. I couldn’t get much since they were being very secretive about it."
As I listened to Corey, a subtle grin ford on my face as I thought to myself, ’They finally reached out to , huh? It took them longer than I expected.’
"Tell them to call ," I replied, wondering why Eliza or Pax hadn’t contacted directly. Instead, they had Beth and Amy reach out to Corey. Considering the gravity of the situation, their choices didn’t make sense. Unless, they form were occupied with sothing more concerning or not available for so reason.
Corey shook her head and explained, "They think you’re a demigod now and want to follow proper etiquette. Just tell when you’re ready to et them, and I’ll text them. You can sort it out when you et."
"I’m free now. Tell them to co over—" Before I could even finish the sentence, Corey cut in, yelling, "You’ve got to be kidding ! We literally just talked about this a few seconds ago. How can you forget already? Wyatt, postpone my trait acquisition one more ti, just one more ti, and I swear I’ll go on strike. Believe , I will."
Looking at Corey’s red, tomato-like face, I almost chuckled. Instead, I told her the truth, "Corey, trust . This takes priority over you and the holy grounds project. Right now, two hundred miles from our city, the Emissary of Light, Gideon Grim, and a secret agent from the central governnt, along with their forces, are waiting to attack the city and capture . Any and all information I can get now is welcod."
"What? How co I’m only hearing about it now? Who all knows about it?" Corey exclaid in shock. Then she asked, "Why aren’t we preparing for battle? Why are we acting like it’s just another day?"
"Because it is just another day for the citizens," I replied calmly. "The fight is far beyond their understanding and strength. Except for the demigods under , the freedom fighters, and you guys, no one knows about it. Less the people know about the batter. I’ll handle it. Don’t make regret telling you this."
I warned Corey, fully aware of exactly what she was thinking. Immigrating the entire city into Lil’ Red Storm’s realm.
"I don’t know what you’re talking about," Corey denied, though her eyes told a different story. That didn’t stop her from doubling down as she caught my gaze. "What, you don’t trust ? Then why did you even tell ? Fuck it. I’m going to summon Lil’ Baem."
Having learned about the possible war, she would only feel safe with Lil’ Baem by her side.
"Don’t forget to tell the Whiteburns I’m waiting," I reminded her as she stord off, muttering to herself like an insane person. Then I turned to Petra and said, "Why don’t you get started? I’ll join you later."
"About that," Petra replied, "I’m not leaving Bloodette’s side until she finishes her emotional cleansing and I know she’s fine." She was adamant, making it clear she wouldn’t leave her friend.
Listening to Petra, my expression went deadpan. It seed my Holy Grounds venture had run into its first problem before it had even begun.
