"Cortney, you convince her to help us build the Holy Grounds before Bloodette finishes... cleansing her emotions, as she put it." I tossed the responsibility to Cortney. After all, this was a joint venture.
"Wyatt, can’t it wait until after that?" Cortney asked. She clearly didn’t want to leave Bloodette’s side. Asking her to change Petra’s mind seed like a bad idea, but Cortney always ca through. If anyone could sway Petra, it had to be her, as she understood the latter’s perspective better than most of us.
"No, it can’t. I’ve already shared the blueprints and schematics of the subterranean field with your grimoire. I want it completed within the next twenty-four hours." I shut down Cortney’s hesitation and assigned the task with what I considered a reasonable tifra. After all, Petra was the Stone Supre and held the highest realm one could attain in the card world. With her skills and experience, it would be difficult for her not to finish the work before the deadline.
"Wyatt?" Cortney exclaid, unable to believe what she was hearing.
"Co on, Cortney. Consider it a surprise for Bloodette," I said. When it was clear neither of them was buying it, I pressed on. "Don’t you have clones? I don’t care how you do it, as long as the work is finished without any major or minor flaws within the ti fra."
"That I can do," Petra agreed after hearing my proposal that she could use her clone to excavate the subterranean field while her original body remained at her best friend’s side.
"See? Simple," I said to Cortney.
She stared at , mouth hanging open, unable to understand why I had assigned her a task that I seed able to resolve with a single sentence. There were reasons for it. First, I hadn’t known whether Petra would even be open to the idea. Second, her job wasn’t done. I needed soone to guide Petra through the design of the subterranean field. I could have assigned one of my calamity daughter gems, but knowing Petra’s personality, I knew she would never take instructions or opinions from soone weaker than her or from soone she did not respect. Corey wasn’t stronger than Petra, but she had her respect. That made the choice obvious. It had to be her.
"You guys set up your shop here while the clones excavate. Cortney, make sure Petra’s clones build the subterranean field exactly where I marked it on the city map, and strictly according to the blueprints and designs I sent you. Got it?" I said, piling one task onto another as I briefed Cortney. Hopefully, it would keep her distracted from Bloodette.
Her agonizing over sothing that was natural for Supre Beings was pointless. It was no different from a man worrying about a woman’s nstruation. It was a natural process. You couldn’t stop it. As long as you weren’t a jerk about it, that was enough.
"Wyatt, I don’t know anything about excavation or construction. I think you should hire professionals for this," Cortney refused again, pushing back while making a valid point. She knew her capabilities and, more importantly, her limits.
"I already did. They should be here any minute now. Your job is to act as the bridge between them and Petra," I replied, nodding in agreent as I laid out the arrangents I had already put in place and clarified her role in the process. "Basically, you’ll be managing them and overseeing the entire project."
"I can do that. I oversaw the expansion of the orphanage with Jaya," Cortney said, breaking into a broad smile. With clear expectations and a defined role, her confidence ca naturally.
"Great. Then you shouldn’t have any problems with this. Still, if anything cos up, feel free to call or Diana," I said, looking at the Bloodette, who had collapsed into a weeping puddle of blood. Honestly, the basent now looked straight out of hell.
"Wyatt, the Whiteburns are waiting at Campus Park. How do I handle this? Should I invite them to the basent, or have soone arrange a conference room..." Corey trailed off, suddenly realizing she would make the worst secretary imaginable.
Fortunately for her, she was a demon rchant, not an assistant. Even if that position had co at the cost of selling a century of her life to her jerk of a boss. Still, considering how much she earned on the side, along with the flexible hours and added perks, she couldn’t really complain.
As I listened to Corey, my eyes t Lil’ Baem’s. It had coiled itself around Corey’s single ponytail, acting as a living hairband. Ignoring its glare, I replied, "The Campus Park is good, actually. I’ll et them there. Just close it off for others, at least until our eting concludes."
With a nod to Cortney and Petra, I left the basent alongside Corey. As I reached Campus Park, I saw that it was just Jack Whiteburn, the family head; Eliza, the heir; and Paul, the glorious hocoming, who had arrived to et . It was a much smaller group than I had expected. I had hoped Pax would be there as well, if only to see how far he had progressed. I supposed they couldn’t risk lifting the elaborate array formation guarding their estate just to send him out.
Even though I had already dealt with the Emissary of Light’s believers within the city, caution was still warranted. No matter how thorough the purge had been, there was always the possibility that one had slipped through. What they didn’t know was that the Houndragons guarding the city could scent out the Emissary of Light’s worshippers with ease. Still, their vigilance was understandable.
As I drew closer, I noticed an anomaly within Paul Whiteburn’s Soul Pathways. Two wills coexisted inside him. One was overwhelmingly dominant, suppressing the other so completely that it couldn’t even struggle. The weaker will had gone dormant, as if choked into unconsciousness.
