"Mr. Jones, I told you, you should spend your ti on people who are worth cherishing." Naturally, Rebecca Quentin was referring to Christine Quinn.
"No, that’s not the reason... You’re angry with , so you don’t want to see or talk to ."
Rebecca Quentin gently broke free from Skyler Jones, turned around, and replied, "I’m not angry with you about anything; I’m just considering my sister."
Skyler Jones narrowed his eyes into a line, slyly scrutinizing Rebecca Quentin, "Of course you’re angry, how can you not be? If I hadn’t cruelly revealed the truth about your father’s murder in T City, you and Howard Geoffrey might be blissfully happy now!"
Rebecca Quentin abruptly turned around, staring icily at Skyler Jones, "Even if that’s what you found out, can you say you weren’t deliberately trying to sabotage at that ti?"
Skyler Jones suddenly rushed to Rebecca Quentin and tightly grasped her arms, "I was deliberate, so what?"
Rebecca Quentin stared straight into Skyler Jones’s deep eyes filled with possessiveness; the pain and loss of that mory still lingered in her clear, forlorn eyes.
Skyler Jones’s voice was hoarse, "It’s a fact that he deceived you."
"So you had long known the instigator was your mother. You foresaw that Howard Geoffrey couldn’t explain it to because he wanted to protect your mother and maintain familial harmony, thus achieving your despicable goal!!"
"Am I despicable?" Skyler Jones coldly laughed, "Compared to everything Howard Geoffrey did to you, am I considered despicable?"
Rebecca Quentin turned her head to the side.
Skyler Jones, filled with hatred, turned Rebecca Quentin’s face back, forcing her to make eye contact with him. Pain fleeted out, "Howard Geoffrey toyed with your feelings ti and again, while I was always careful with you, never daring to force you even slightly. Is that called despicable? You finally agreed to date , yet Howard Geoffrey took you to Foam Island, forcefully taking you away from . When you returned, I saw the affectionate look you gave him, and I could only swallow my anger— is that also despicable? When you were alone in Alton giving birth, saying you wanted a peaceful life, I didn’t dare disturb you and forced myself to stay far away—does that count as despicable? If everything I’ve done is called despicable, then what do you call what Howard Geoffrey did to you?"
Skyler Jones laughed sinisterly, "Miscarriage, divorce, neglecting you, letting you give birth in a foreign land, repeatedly toying with your emotions... Up to this day, he still doesn’t care about you, even being affectionate with another woman. Isn’t that his despicability, not his care and love for you?"
Rebecca Quentin choked out, "If it weren’t for you, he and I wouldn’t have co to this point..."
Skyler Jones laughed aloud, spitting out sarcastically, "Then now that the misunderstandings are all cleared, why aren’t you together? If it’s true love, he should have spared no expense to keep you by his side. Why is the woman accompanying him right now soone else? Don’t tell he still loves you, because from your forlorn eyes, I can already see the hurt he’s done to you!!"
"Enough!!" Rebecca Quentin forcefully broke free from Skyler Jones, slowly retreating. Her vision blurred with tears during the retreat; she struggled to widen her eyes to prevent the tears from falling, suppressing the ache in her throat, and softly spoke, "I indeed have been naive, but I’ve never regretted any decision I made in the past. You don’t need to remind of my current sorry state on purpose." Then, Rebecca Quentin turned towards the door.
"Becca..."
At the last second before leaving the lounge, Rebecca Quentin stopped, back to Skyler Jones, speaking in the most composed tone she could manage, "I’ll find you again to talk about the design matters. I hope next ti what we talk about won’t be private affairs."
Watching Rebecca Quentin leave, Skyler Jones punched the wall fiercely.
After leaving "Oversky," Rebecca Quentin called Christine Quinn.
The call was quickly connected, and Rebecca Quentin collected her troubled mind, speaking cheerily, "Sis!"
Christine Quinn’s voice was as gentle as ever, "Weren’t you too busy to call ?"
"Yes, yes, I’ve neglected you for this ti... Are you in Y City now?"
"Where else would I be if not here?"
"Sis, I don’t know where you live, just quickly give your address!"
Christine Quinn cautiously responded, "Did you co to Y City?"
Rebecca Quentin excitedly said, "Mm, I ca to Y City for a business trip, and I happen to have so ti. I can visit you this afternoon!"
"Ah?"
"What’s with that reaction? Aren’t you happy I’m coming?"
Christine Quinn hurriedly explained, "No, it’s not that. Of course, I’m happy you’re coming, it’s just I..."
"What’s up with you?"
"Uh, I happen to be out of Y City these days. Marie’s teacher is organizing an activity in another city for the kids, and I’m worried about Marie, so I went with them."
Rebecca Quentin skeptically said, "But didn’t you just say you’re in Y City?"
"I..."
"Sis, why are you speaking hesitantly? What’s going on? Is sothing wrong?"
Christine Quinn sighed, "Well, I didn’t want to worry you..."
Hearing the heaviness in Christine Quinn’s voice, Rebecca Quentin beca worried, "What exactly happened?"
Christine Quinn spoke slowly, "It’s like this... Marie’s condition has worsened, she’s been in the hospital these days. The doctor says her condition isn’t optimistic, and surgery needs to be done as soon as possible."
"What?" Rebecca Quentin scolded, "Why didn’t you tell about such a big matter?"
"I didn’t want you to worry..."
"Which hospital are you at now? I’m coming imdiately."
Christine Quinn then gave Rebecca Quentin an address.
Rebecca Quentin hailed a cab and rushed to the hospital as fast as she could.
From Christine Quinn’s ambiguous words, Rebecca Quentin had already guessed that Marilyn Quinn’s condition must be more serious than Christine described. Indeed, when Rebecca Quentin arrived at the children’s hospital, the situation was much worse than she imagined.
"You should have told earlier..."
Standing in front of the glass wall, looking at Marilyn Quinn lying on the bed with various IV tubes inserted, Rebecca Quentin spoke with heartache.
Standing next to Rebecca Quentin, Christine Quinn, weary all over, sighed and said, "What good would it have done to tell you? It would have just added another person to worry."
Rebecca Quentin reached out to hug Christine Quinn, "At the very least, I could be here with you."
Christine Quinn looked into the glass wall at her daughter sleeping inside, forcing herself to smile, "Don’t worry about ; I’ve always been aware of Marie’s condition, aware of how she might react, so I’ve long prepared myself ntally to face all this, it’s just... I didn’t expect it to co so quickly."
