Staring at his empty hand, Cassian Jennings’s brows furrowed slightly. His expression was detached, but his tone held a hint of irony. "Sotis, I really wish we could see the future. Maybe then, we wouldn’t miss out on the most important person in our lives."
Alia Avery’s eyes reddened, and waves of pain began to wash over her heart.
’If I could see the future, I would have stamped out my feelings for Cassian Jennings from the very beginning. If I could see the future, I would have made sure never to get involved with him in the first place...’
’But there are no "what ifs" in this world. I can’t see the future, so I fell in love with him, and that love has lasted for so many years...’
"I think our encounters over this past month are proof enough that we’re fated to et. If possible, I hope we don’t miss out on each other." Cassian Jennings suddenly turned to face her, a profound look in his eyes.
"Why?" At Cassian Jennings’s sudden confession, Alia Avery’s heart began to pound, but that was imdiately followed by heartache.
An imnse heartache...
’She had loved him for so many years, but he had never been willing to accept her. Yet now, for so woman he’d just t, he could say they were fated to et and shouldn’t miss their chance.’
’How ridiculous...’
’Cassian Jennings, is this just your usual pickup routine?’
’Cassian Jennings, do you even have a heart?’
’Is it really that easy to just tell any random woman you like her?’
’I, Alia Avery... I’m so pitiful and pathetic. If only I weren’t Alia Avery. If only I could be any other woman, how wonderful that would be...’
’But even though I don’t want to admit it, even though I don’t want to be Alia Avery, I still am. And Alia Avery’s pain will forever ache inside my heart...’
Alia Avery didn’t know how long she stood there in a daze, nor how long she’d been struggling with herself, but she finally managed to get her emotions under control. A cold smile touched her lips. "Master Jennings, if you’re just trying to hit on , then you’ve picked the wrong person."
As soon as she finished speaking, Alia Avery turned and walked toward the curb, raising her hand to hail a cab.
Seeing what she was doing, Cassian Jennings grew anxious and quickly grabbed her arm. "I’m being sincere."
"Sincere? Master Jennings, you must be joking." ’What kind of man tells a complete stranger he’s sincerely fallen for her?’
"Whether you believe or not, I am sincere." At that mont, a dull ache spread through Cassian Jennings’s heart, and his voice trembled slightly.
’I was an asshole before, unable to see my own heart. But now... now I know exactly what I want...’
Alia Avery turned and took a step toward Cassian Jennings, her voice icy cold. "Heh... Sincere? Master Jennings, you sincerely *like* ? Or do you just sincerely want to get in bed?"
Alia Avery’s blunt words left Cassian Jennings speechless. His face darkened, and his grip on her arm tightened slightly.
Seeing Cassian Jennings fall silent, the pain in Alia Avery’s eyes deepened, and her smile beca even more mocking. "What’s wrong? Nothing to say?" ’Did I hit a nerve?’
’Is that why he’s speechless?’
Alia Avery shot her hand out, grabbing Cassian Jennings by the collar and yelling, "If all you want is to get in my pants, then be more direct about it!" As she spoke, tears began to stream from her eyes. She rose onto her tiptoes and bit down hard on his lips...
