Now reading: Chapter 23 23: Can One Truly Survive in Space? from Dragon Ball: Summoning Whis at the Start, a Action novel by mxl1440.

In the Northern Galaxy, there were three planets of particular note—Nak, tamor, and Yardrat.

Not far from Nak, across the starry void, hung a purple planet. Its surface was mostly barren rock and rugged wilderness.

That planet… was none other than Yardrat.

In the Dragon Ball ani, it was on this very planet that Son Goku had learned the art of Instant Transmission.

And now, a child dressed in garnts resembling those of ancient Egypt stood amid one of its streets.

Gran stood at the center of the bustling road as the Yardratians moved past him on both sides.

The Yardratians were rather short in stature, with skin that ranged between shades of pink and pale white.

As they passed by, each of them cast Gran a curious, almost uneasy look.

Gran didn't seem to notice their stares. His lips moved slightly, murmuring to himself:

"Why did Whis say I already possess the ability to survive in outer space…?"

When Whis had dropped him off here, Gran had made a request:

he wanted to acquire the ability to live in the vacuum of space.

After all, the inability to survive in space had always been a Saiyan's fatal weakness. No matter how strong a Saiyan beca—once their planet was destroyed and oxygen ran out—they would inevitably perish.

Just like that ti on Planet Nak—when Frieza, despite being defeated by Goku, still blew up the planet!

Had Goku not stumbled upon Captain Ginyu's ship, he would have never made it out alive.

Gran didn't want to share that sa weakness. That was why he'd asked Whis for help.

And with Whis's mysterious, godlike power, Gran was sure the angel could have granted his wish.

Yet, Whis refused.

He rely smiled and told Gran:

"You already possess the ability to survive in space."

"Why… would he say sothing like that?"

Gran frowned deeply as he stood there in the street.

For a Saiyan to gain such an ability, the only ones capable of granting it would be either an angel or Shenron himself.

But Gran had never made such a wish to Shenron—so why could he now breathe in space?

He couldn't figure it out no matter how hard he thought.

"Guess there's only one way to find out…"

Gran muttered under his breath. Then, looking up at the violet sky, he gathered his ki into his legs.

Whoosh!

With a sharp burst of power, Gran shot upward—piercing through the atmosphere like a cot.

The mont he vanished from the street, the Yardratians below erupted in commotion.

"Half a year ago, wasn't a nearby planet destroyed by two mysterious warriors? One of them wore the exact sa clothes as that kid!"

"Don't tell he's one of them!"

"Quick! Inform the Grand Elder!"

Gran, of course, had no idea what was happening behind him.

He was already at the edge of the atmosphere.

There was still a faint trace of oxygen here—but one more step forward, and he'd enter the true vacuum of space.

Without hesitation, he took a deep breath—and stepped out.

Then he tried to breathe again.

Rumble!

Gran's heart gave a jolt.

There was no air flowing in or out—but strangely, he didn't feel suffocated at all.

"How… is this possible?"

Disbelieving, he stayed put. If he began to feel any discomfort, he'd retreat right away.

Ten minutes passed.

Twenty.

An hour.

Gran's eyes widened.

He had stayed in the vacuum of space for so long—and yet he didn't feel suffocated in the slightest.

anwhile, far away in the Realm of the Gods, Whis was watching him through the crystal orb atop his staff.

The angel smiled faintly.

"Because your dinsion has already ascended to the pinnacle of the Kaiō level.

In other words… you're no longer a re mortal.

Your body simply isn't bound by the laws of the vacuum anymore."

Gran, unaware of this truth, tried to make sense of it himself.

A Saiyan surviving in space was supposed to be impossible.

Two explanations ca to mind.

Either his physique was special—so special that it allowed him to exist in a vacuum

Or soone had made a wish to Shenron, asking that Saiyans gain the ability to survive in outer space.

And since he was a Saiyan himself, that change must've affected him too.

But… he was just an upper-class Saiyan. How could his body be that extraordinary?

That only left the second possibility.

So who had made that wish to Shenron?

Gran's chest tightened with unease.

In the original story, no one had ever made such a wish.

Could his very arrival in this world have triggered a butterfly effect?

"Whis must know sothing… I'll have to ask him next ti!"

Gran recalled Whis's words before leaving.

Since the angel hadn't seed alard, the issue probably wasn't a dangerous one.

Thinking that, Gran felt much more at ease.

"Still… being able to survive in space feels amazing!"

With that, he set his worries aside and began soaring joyously through the cosmos.

The endless void, the dazzling stars—it was a breathtaking sight beyond imagination.

After a while, Gran decided to return to Yardrat to begin his training in Instant Transmission.

But suddenly

He noticed two figures floating ahead, orbiting a gigantic sphere of light.

One of them was short, with pale purple skin, a white punk-style hairstyle, and a pair of Potara earrings dangling from his ears.

When Gran saw the man's divine robes, his pupils shrank sharply.

"Kaiōshin Shin!!!"

The Supre Kai of Universe 7—currently in the process of creating a planet—turned his head sharply upon hearing his na called.

Beside him, Kibito also turned.

Before them hovered a child—no more than eight years old!

"Who are you?! How dare you speak the Supre Kai's na so casually!"

Kibito's tone was dripping with contempt, his arrogance befitting one who served a god.

Gran, however, ignored him completely.

"Shin, what are you doing here? Shouldn't you be in the Sacred World of the Kai?"

He knew exactly how Kibito behaved in the early days, so he didn't even bother responding to the man's hostility. His eyes remained fixed on Shin.

"Insolence!"

Kibito, enraged by being ignored, lunged forward to punish the boy

But before he could even react, his vision blurred.

Sothing gripped his throat tightly—bones cracking under the pressure.

He looked down in horror.

The child was right in front of him, one small hand clasped firmly around his neck.

The pain was unbearable.

The aura of death enveloped him completely.

Terror flooded Kibito's heart.

"I know you're arrogant," Gran said coldly, "but don't you ever act arrogant in front of again.

Next ti—you die."

He tossed Kibito aside like trash, then turned his gaze back to Kaiōshin Shin.

Shin's body stiffened.

Kibito possessed enough power to obliterate Frieza with ease—yet this child had crushed him in an instant.

But… judging by the boy's tone and deanor, it didn't seem like he ant any harm.

Relaxing slightly, Shin asked, "Who are you? And how do you know ?"

"You're the Supre Kai of Universe 7. Of course I know you."

Gran pointed at his own attire—the garnts of a God of Destruction. His childish voice carried an oddly solemn tone.

"But the real question is—do you recognize ?"
