The father’s tombstone rests in a corner of the cetery.
On the eighth day of the Lunar New Year, the last day of her holiday, Mabel Quinn ca to the cetery to visit her father. Or rather, her adoptive father.
The photo on the tombstone was of a man in his early thirties, slightly chubby, but exuding a feeling of warmth and approachability.
Father always had a gentle smile, accompanying her, talking a lot with her, and she loved his smile.
But after she turned eleven, she never saw that smile again.
"Dad," Mabel murmured, placing a bouquet before the tombstone, then leaning forward and gently wiping the dust from the photo with her fingers. "I found out a few days ago that I wasn’t your biological daughter, but a child you kindly took in."
The man in the photo still smiled at her, just like he did in her mories.
"Thank you for raising , for giving such a wonderful childhood, and for giving a second chance at life." If Dad hadn’t taken her in, if he hadn’t saved her from the water, she’d have been dead long ago. "So, Dad, I won’t take my life lightly. I’ll cherish it and live well because this life is yours to !"
Her eyes welled up with tears, and she lifted her hand, wiping her eyes with the back of it. "I intended to bring soone else here with today, to introduce him to you, to tell you that you needn’t worry because soone else would accompany and love forever... but... I’m sorry, I couldn’t bring him with ."
She choked on her words, so much she wanted to say to her father, so many grievances to vent.
If only her father were still alive, how wonderful it would be. She could run into his arms and cry her heart out. No matter how tough life got, she’d never feel so alone.
Because no matter when, her father would always be her support, giving her a sense of security.
But no longer now, he is gone forever.
At her father’s grave, Mabel poured her heart out, speaking for hours until the sky was nearly dark. Only then did she stand up, "Dad, I have to go now. I’ll co to see you again. Even by myself, I can go on, I promise!"
Exiting the cetery, Mabel visited a nearby bank and returned the over 80 million she had received from Kyle Kinston for the Lunar New Year. Transferring the Money back required just the account number, not a bank card password or anything like that.
Since she and Kyle couldn’t see it through to the end, she didn’t want to keep these things. Returning them was for the best. From now on, she’d rely solely on her own efforts to keep going.
After returning the Money, Mabel felt a sense of relief, then took a bus back to the urban village where she lived.
The buildings here were self-constructed by farrs, primarily for rental purposes. Hence, all walks of life ca and went, making it a complex place, which was why Alice Conley had been concerned before.
But as Mabel reached the building where she lived, she suddenly stopped in her tracks. Not far away, a tall figure stood at the entrance of her building’s stairwell.
Daniel Harris, how did he find his way here?!
As soon as Daniel saw Mabel, he started walking briskly toward her. "Mabel."
