Now reading: Chapter 217: The Gold Snakes from Evolving My Mythic Legion With A Legendary Skill, a Fantasy novel by Jinmoon.

The plant growth on the ground was different in colour, darker, the green of it having developed a depth that absorbed the already minimal light rather than reflecting it, and the root systems on the ground were not the slow continuous rearrangent of the lower tiers but sothing more structured, the roots holding positions for aningful periods before shifting, the formations they created having recognisable shapes that persisted.

The Gold class Wood Snakes had been in this territory long enough that the territory had beco an extension of them in a way that the lower tiers’ territory had not been.

They had shaped it.

Neil paused at the edge of the transition and looked at the architecture of the place, the way the root formations created natural corridors between the massive tree trunks, the way the canopy’s gaps were positioned to allow the particular quality of directionless light to illuminate specific areas while leaving others in genuine darkness.

A hunting ground.

Designed, not grown.

He took his ti at the edge before going in, reading what he could from the outside before the inside gave him the real information.

The first Gold class he encountered was coiled around a tree trunk fifteen tres into the territory.

Not hidden, not using the root network to conceal itself, simply present and visible, coiled around the trunk at a height of three tres with its head oriented directly toward him.

It had seen his approach.

It was looking at him while he was still at the edge of its territory.

Its body was eight tres, the scales carrying a sheen that the lower classes had not had, a faint iridescence in the deep green that moved as the body moved, and the pattern of the scales was more complex than anything below this tier, geotric in a way that was not random, sothing almost deliberate in the arrangent.

Its eyes were different too.

The lower class eyes had been functional, present, registering threat, but the Gold class eyes were carrying sothing additional, the particular quality of genuine assessnt rather than simple threat detection.

Neil stood still and let it look at him and looked back.

Behind it, visible in the depths of the territory between the tree trunks, two more Gold class bodies in motion, moving with the unhurried confidence of things that were approaching toward sothing rather than fleeing from it.

He activated the third phase.

The transformation ca from inside, the familiar wave of it, and the fog armor sealed around him in the configuration that fifteen feet required, his fra expanding with the increase in physical stats that the phase brought, the future sight coming online in the slight forward-lag of perception that gave him the reaction window he needed at this tier.

The world sharpened.

Everything that had been readable beca more readable, the incoming Snake’s trajectory not an inference but a certainty, the path of it already drawn in his perception before it had committed to any movent.

The first Gold Snake uncoiled from the tree and ca toward him along the root network surface, above the roots rather than through them, moving with the particular fluid confidence of sothing that was fully in its environnt.

Neil t it with the Inferno chain before it covered half the distance between them.

The chain went out in a full overhead arc and ca down across the Snake’s body at the point his future sight had marked as optimal, the full weight of the third phase’s physical enhancent behind the swing and the Inferno energy loaded into the strike before impact.

The sound of the contact was felt in the ground as much as heard in the air.

The Snake’s body buckled at the contact point, the impact itself producing visible damage to the scale structure at the point of contact, and the Inferno energy discharged simultaneously into the buckled section, the heat moving inward imdiately.

The Gold class body fought it.

Not passively, the way the lower tiers fought the Inferno’s effect, but with the active biological response of sothing that had a strong enough system to push back, the internal temperature rising but not reaching the levels that the Bronze and Silver class bodies had reached under the sa discharge because the Gold class biology was processing and distributing the heat rather than simply absorbing it.

He had been warned about the regeneration at this tier.

The Gold Snake hit the ground and was moving before it fully landed, the body not subdued by the impact the way the lower class ones had been subdued, the Gold class resilience absorbing the hit and the nerve system continuing to function through the damage.

The second Snake ca from the left in the sa mont, faster than the first had been, the approach angle lower and more diagonal, clearly targeting his legs with the intent to get below the fog armor’s primary coverage and reach the biological systems beneath it directly.

Neil brought the Frost blade down in a diagonal counter-swing that intercepted the head before it completed the approach trajectory, the blade edge catching the flat triangle of the Gold class skull at the angle that deflected upward rather than absorbing the montum.

The Snake’s head ca up under the deflection, the jaw opening as the trajectory changed, and he drove the Frost chain directly into the open mouth before the jaw could close, the Frost blade following into the sa target through the sa opening.

The discharge from inside the Gold class mouth and throat was different from the external freeze pattern, moving outward through the bone and tissue from the inside, the crystallisation working with the structure rather than against it and therefore moving faster and more comprehensively than the sa energy applied to the exterior would have.

The Gold class Snake’s head and upper body locked.

It dropped.

The third Gold Snake had not moved.

Neil straightened and looked at it across the space between them and it looked back with the assessing quality it had been carrying since before the engagent began, the quality of sothing that had been watching him handle two of its kind in rapid succession and was updating its model of the threat accordingly.

Smart.

Not intelligent in the human sense, but smart in the way that made it more dangerous rather than less, the Gold class brain processing and adjusting rather than simply following through on an initial plan.

Then the roots moved.

Not opportunistically, not as a secondary response to sothing else that was happening, but as a primary action, a comprehensive and rapid deploynt of every root structure within a fifty tre radius activating simultaneously, the roots rising and extending and weaving with a speed that was clearly not passive biology but directed intent, the Gold Snake directing the territory the way it had shaped the territory over ti.

A cage ford.

Four tres above the ground, sealed at the top, surrounding both Neil and the Gold Snake in the sa enclosed structure, the walls of it dense enough that the directionless light from above beca further reduced inside, the space between the walls carrying the particular quality of sowhere that the ambient environntal information ca in differently than in open territory.

The Gold Snake ca at him through the enclosed space.

Then the ntal pressure arrived.

Thin and subtle at the edge of his cognition, not heavy enough to feel like an attack, designed to feel like nothing until it had been working for long enough to have affected the processing it was targeting.

The threat assessnt distortion.

The Gold Snake was moving at him and so small part of his cognition was suggesting it was moving slower than it actually was, that the distance was larger than it actually was, that the angle was less committed than it actually was, all of it small and subtle and in exactly the direction of making him respond a fraction late.

He recognised it.

Not because he had experienced it before but because Cynthia had described it precisely enough that the description matched the experience with the accuracy of a warning given by soone who knew exactly what they were talking about.

He dismissed it with the sa deliberate quality he used to dismiss anything that was trying to influence his processing without his consent, pushing the distortion out and replacing it with the unfiltered sensory data his Phantom perception was providing, which disagreed with the distortion’s suggestions on every point.

[Phantom’s Imprint Activated.]

The imprint went into the Gold Snake’s soul space and the soul space damage hit the Gold class’s coordination in the way the skill’s fracture produced, a brief disruption in the target’s integrated function, the snake’s movent stuttering for a single step.

Neil used it.

He dissolved, the Pseudo Apotheosis state arriving in the fluid way it arrived, his body releasing its solid form and moving through the gaps in the root cage as mist and droplets and compressed fluid through the gaps in the soil.

He reford outside the cage.

The Gold Snake was inside it.

He drove both blades through the root wall from the outside, Inferno and Frost simultaneously, the two chains discharging into the root structure at full intensity from two angles, and the cage cracked along both discharge lines, the thermal shock from two opposing extres eting at the wood structure producing a fracture pattern that was more comprehensive than either alone would have generated.

The cage collapsed inward and the Gold Snake burst through the falling roots and Neil was already positioned for the opening the collapse created.
