The cold did not leave with the night.

It clung. To skin. To fabric. To bone.

Morning ca without warmth. Only light. A pale, reluctant glow filtered through the canopy, breaking into thin fragnts before touching the ground. It revealed everything—

And fixed nothing.

They woke slowly. Not rested. Not recovered. Just... dragged back into awareness.

Clothes clung to their bodies, stiff with dried sweat, dust, and faint streaks of blood. The fabric scratched against skin, uncomfortable in a way no one had the energy to fix.

No one complained. There was nothing to say.

Iris pushed herself up first. Her muscles resisted imdiately, a dull ache settling deep in her limbs. Her ponytail had loosened soti during the night, strands of hair sticking lightly to her cheek.

She brushed them back, tucking them behind her ear. Ignored the gri on her fingers.

Around her, the others stirred. Caleb sat up with a quiet groan, rubbing the back of his neck like he could force the stiffness away.

Benjamin was already awake, gaze distant, calculating even now.

Veronica moved slower, carefully, her hand pressing briefly into her leg before she exhaled.

Henry rose with control, his grip tightening around his walking stick for just a mont before steadying again.

Daniel was already sitting. Still. Too still. Claire noticed. She said nothing, but her attention stayed on him. Quiet. Constant.

Elias exhaled slowly, rougher than it should have been. Beside him, the black dog was already alert.

Snow stood first ears forward body still... Watching.

Iris followed its gaze. Then lifted hers. The forest hadn’t changed. Too dense. Too closed. Too many blind spots. Her eyes moved slowly. Ground dips. Tree spacing. Shadow patterns.

Then—

She saw it. A slope.

Rising ground, barely visible through a break in the canopy.

Higher elevation. Her arm lifted and pointed towards it. "We go up."

No hesitation. No discussion. Henry watched her briefly. Then nodded. That was enough.

The climb began. And imdiately— It fought them.

The ground shifted underfoot, loose soil sliding just enough to threaten balance. Roots twisted across their path, catching boots, forcing constant correction.

Jin Tejin moved slightly ahead, scanning.

He paused once. "...Watch your step." The warning ca just before Caleb stepped forward. Too late. His foot slipped.

"shit!!" His body tipped forward—

A hand caught him. Hard. It was Marcus.

The grip steadied him instantly.

Caleb exhaled sharply, regaining balance, giving a quick nod. No one spoke. They kept moving.

The climb dragged. Step after step, effort turned into strain.

Sweat returned despite the cold, sticking clothes back to skin, mixing with dust and dried blood into sothing uncomfortable and heavy.

They stopped. More than once. Not to rest. Just to keep going.

Veronica leaned forward at one point, pressing into her thigh.

Henry’s pace slowed, but he never stopped. Benjamin climbed in silence, eyes still working. Caleb pushed himself harder now. Daniel moved with them. But sothing about it felt—

Off. Not weak. Not unstable. Just... different. Claire stayed close. Always within reach. Snow moved between Iris and the path ahead.

The black dog stayed with Elias.

Jin Tejin adjusted position constantly.

When they reached higher ground— They stopped. Breathing heavy. The forest opened slightly. Not safe, but clearer.

Endless trees stretched outward, their canopies tangled together into sothing almost unnatural. Vines hung between them, swaying faintly.

It was vast. Too vast Marcus’s head turned "There."

Iris followed his gaze.

A cave. Half-hidden behind overgrowth. Not large. Not small. Just enough. The ground around it showed signs. Not fresh. But not untouched.

Iris stepped forward slightly. Ash. Faint. Lingering. Marcus moved first.

Victor followed. They disappeared inside. Silence stretched... "Clear."

They entered carefully. The cave swallowed light quickly. It was cool and damp. The faint scent of ash mixed with sothing older.

Scratches marked the walls. Repeated. Unnatural. Iris stepped in last.

Then she activated her new skill [ Appraisal ]. Her vision flickered. Then shifted. A faint green overlay settled over everything.

Edges sharpened. Shadows shifted. Sothing moved small and Fast, through the cracks.

"Wait."

Everything froze. Then— They ca out. Way too fast.

Small bodies burst from the walls, darting across the ground in erratic patterns. Long, thin tails dragged behind them. Their movents were sharp, unnatural. Teeth flashed. Too many.

"Contact."

Gunfire exploded. The sound slamd against the cave walls, echoing violently.

They didn’t rush straight. They flanked. Adapted.

One darted toward Veronica—

Claire moved instantly, pulling her back as a shot dropped it mid-lunge.

Another angled toward Henry— Li Wei stepped in, positioning himself firmly between them, weapon already raised.

Benjamin shifted—

Priscilla was already there, stance tight, covering his side without needing instruction.

Caleb barely had ti to react before a creature veered toward him— Evelina stepped forward, presence cold and sharp, intercepting with precise efficiency. Caleb stiffened slightly. Not from fear of the creature. From her.

Amid the chaos— One broke through, Low. Fast. Heading straight for Elias. No one else saw. They were focused on the others.

But Daniel did. He moved. Too fast. A sudden burst forward— Wind kicked faintly beneath his step, subtle but real—

He reached it before it closed the distance. Stopped.

The creature dropped monts later from another shot. But Daniel had already pulled back. Still. Looking. Confused That distance—

That speed—

His gaze flicked to where he had been standing. Then back. Sothing wasn’t right. But no one noticed.

Victor fired with controlled precision.

Jin Tejin wasted no movent.

Marcus anchored the center.

Snow lunged once, then retreated to Iris’s side.

The black dog stayed beside Elias. Low. Ready.

Then— Stillness.

Bodies scattered across the cave floor. The sll thickened imdiately.

"...Clear." No one relaxed. Not fully.

They stayed. Because there was nowhere else.

Food ca out again of their spaces again. Dry and unpleasant but necessary. No one reacted this ti. They just ate.

Night ca again. Inside the cave, it felt different. Not safer. Just contained. They slept. Because they had to.

Iris woke first the next morning and stepped outside. The air felt sharper here. More open. From this height, the world stretched endlessly.

The forest rolled outward in layers of green, broken by strange shifts in color and texture. Beautiful. Wrong.

Her gaze moved slowly. Then—

She saw it. Far in the distance.

A thin dark line rising upward. Smoke. Not wild. Controlled. Deliberate. Her eyes narrowed slightly.

"Could that be from other survivors?..." "Or a Settlent." Iris Pondered quietly.

Behind her, the cave remained still. Ahead—

The world was no longer empty. They weren’t alone.
