Ruby cleared her throat and composed herself when she saw Caron approaching our table. He exchanged greetings with the first two people at our table before reaching us.
"You ca; I’m glad," Caron said, shaking her hand warmly.
"I had to," Ruby smiled, turning red. Seeing her turn red made laugh. After greeting Ruby, he turned to . I was expecting him to either skip or behave professionally, but he acted very differently.
He shook my hand, placed a kiss on it, and whispered sothing in my ear: "I’ll send soone to you; I’d like to see you in private. Alone. Without your friend or anyone else," he whispered before moving on to the next person.
Okay. What just happened? Confused, I turned to Ruby and found her looking at .
"What did he say?" She asked, but I couldn’t respond; instead, I looked away and focused my gaze elsewhere.
What is wrong with him? Has he mistaken for Ruby? No, that can’t be the case. I’m sure he recognizes her.
Wait! I might be wrong. He only t us once, or maybe twice. He might have mistaken for Ruby. It can happen.
"What did he say? Why aren’t you telling ?" Ruby frowned.
"He... He wants to et us."
"Huh."
"He wants to et us," I repeated. "He’ll send soone to you. I think he is planning sothing," I lied.
"Oh..." she said and went silent.
I also went silent. The servers brought a starter, and people dug in, but I didn’t touch mine, and neither did Ruby.
Does she know that I lied to her? She is unusually quiet. I hope she doesn’t realize I lied.
No. I don’t think I can do this anymore. I need to take action. Caron is still greeting people and is at the last table. I’ll speak with him once he finishes.
I need to be sure that he understands what he’s doing. Lying to Ruby was cruel; I want to tell her the truth. She seems to be into him. Lying to her isn’t right; I don’t want to ruin our friendship over a man.
When I saw him greeting the last person, I excused myself and stood up. "Where are you going?" Ruby asked.
"Give a minute," I responded before leaving. I approached Caron and caught up with him near the entrance.
"Caron," I called as I drew closer; he stopped and looked at .
"You didn’t have to co to yourself; I said I’d send soone to you," he said.
"I need to speak to you; it’s urgent," I said, stopping before him.
"Okay?" He faced .
"My na is Ara. Ara Sebastian," I introduced myself.
"I know who you are, Ara," he responded.
"My friend is over there; her na is Ruby, and she’s the reason I’m at this event. She dragged here because she wanted to see you," I said, pointing to Ruby.
He put his hands in his pockets and chuckled. "So what are you trying to say?"
"You know what I an. I didn’t appreciate what you did there."
"I like you better; that’s why I did what I did," he said.
"I have a mate. No, not just a mate. I have four mates. I don’t want another."
"So you intend to force to be with soone I do not wish to be with?" He huffed. I scoffed.
Ruby said he was a kind gentleman. Kind, my foot. He is not kind, and neither is he a gentleman; he was only pretending to be one.
"I don’t like your friend, and that’s the truth; apologizing to her or exchanging contacts with her doesn’t an that I want her. If that was the impression I gave, then I apologize."
I swallowed and clenched my hands into tight fists. "Okay," I whispered, tired of exchanging words with him. I guess it’s ti for us to leave. We’ll go before it gets more awkward.
"Okay?" He asked, appearing confused by my response.
"I’ve heard you; I’ll pass the ssage to her. Thank you for clarifying," I said, then turned to leave, but he caught my wrist and pulled back.
"Wait, I’m not done talking." He pulled closer, almost causing our bodies to touch, but I imdiately stepped away; he still held onto .
"What are you doing?" I asked, staring at his hand holding mine. Caron opened his mouth, but before he could speak, my eyes caught two pairs of familiar eyes staring at .
Once I saw them, I imdiately snatched my hand away, almost hurting myself in the process. My actions shocked both Caron and , but we weren’t the only ones surprised.
Parker and Gavin also looked shocked. I’m sure they weren’t expecting to see at this event.
Gavin tried to approach , but I shook my head aggressively, signaling him to stay away. I don’t want this situation to beco bigger. I don’t want things to escalate.
I’ll leave before things get worse.
Without saying anything more, I turned around, went back to our table, and grabbed my purse.
"What is going on?" Ruby whispered.
"I am leaving. I’ll be in the car with Landon; et when you’re ready," I replied and walked out.
I went to the parking lot and found Landon smoking beside his car; he dropped the cigarette and looked at when he saw .
"What happened? It hasn’t been an hour since you left. Why are you back?" He asked, but I didn’t say a word. I couldn’t. I opened the door and sat in the backseat.
He got into the car with . "Ara," he called.
"Are you okay?" He asked, but I didn’t respond imdiately; I kept my gaze down and only replied after gathering my thoughts.
"Are you okay?" He asked again.
I nodded. "I am fine."
"You don’t seem fine."
"I saw the brothers; I wasn’t comfortable, so I had to leave," I explained.
"The brothers? Your mates?"
"Yes, Gavin and Parker."
He sighed and placed his hand on the steering wheel. "I see," he murmured.
"What about my sister?"
"She’ll be here."
After my response, silence settled between us, but Ruby’s appearance changed the atmosphere again.
