By the ti we finished with our little Christmas lunch, it was already late into the evening. Gavin, just like Maya, was tipsy as hell, and this was mostly because she kept pouring drinks into his mouth, just like she did hers, and for so reason, he couldn’t say no to her.

I smiled softly as I walked over to the door and held it open for them, laughing when they both stumbled out of the house together whilst laughing like maniacs as they did.

And goddess, I hated to say this but they sure did look so good together! They were like two pieces of a puzzle ant to fit... and it hurt to realize that I could never bring myself to experience what they felt for each other,

— the fiery passion. The raw emotion. The bond. The everything.

I could never experience any of that and it made feel left out.

Shaking these thoughts out of my head— because that is where it is ant to be (out of my head)— my smile subconsciously widened as I listened to them talk over their voices; And then... Maya suddenly turned to , bead a smile and scread; "Thank you, Lani!"

Her loud voice made wince slightly; And gosh, I had no idea what she was thanking for, but seeing her like this... so happy... so fulfilled... so satisfied made a special kind of warmth slowly bloom in my chest. I felt great when I realized then and there that I loved to see her like this.

That I enjoyed seeing her so happy... even though it was mostly due to Gavin’s presence.

She pulled into a hug and peppered sloppy kisses on my face and head. And when she was probably satisfied with her craft on my face, she leaned away and pressed her lips to my ear, whispering under her breath; "I think he loves you. Like love loves you."

I froze, my eyebrows scrunching up in confusion.

It took a mont to grasp what she was talking about, and when I finally did, I whispered; "No, you’re just drunk."

"And you’re drunk on your insecurities," she sassed back, "...thus the reason you cannot see what’s right in front of you."

Her words made go quiet for a very brief second, and even though... even though I knew that the words she said were true, I didn’t want to be receiving any form of advice from her. Not yet. Not now that she probably has no idea what she is talking about due to how drunk she is.

I nodded slowly as she finally pulled away from and stumbled into Gavin’s waiting arms, waving at slowly as she called out;

"Byee!"

"Byeeee!" I waved back.

"rry Christmas!" She slurred as she stumbled over to his car.

"rry Christmas to you too!" I yelled back, waving despite the sudden hollow feeling spreading across my chest.

It was at that mont that Gavin finally turned to look at , a grateful smile on his lips as he muttered; "Thank you."

But I didn’t respond. Right now, I couldn’t bring myself to speak due to how shaken I was. And as they finally drove off, my chest began to feel even more hollow. I began to wonder if it had been right for to be so pretentious in front of them.

I wondered if it was worth it to steal so of Gavin’s DNA during the process of ’hugging him’.

I quietly shut the door behind and went back into the house, and the first thing I did when I arrived back at the table was to pick up his fork, ignoring Jay’s intense scrutiny as I placed it into a transparent nylon bag.

I also put in the strands of hair I had been able to steal from him, and when I was done with that, I turned around only to gasp when I saw Jay standing right behind , his eyes thinned into slits as he stared pointedly at the bag in my hands.

"What are you doing with that?" He asked in a way that almost made feel embarrassed for doing sothing like this.

My face burned, mostly due to the fact that he was standing so close to , filling my head with images that were too R-rated to talk about. But pushing off these thoughts, I shrugged, feigning nonchalance as I replied; "I’m taking it in for testing."

"You still believe that they aren’t your real family?" He asked, but this ti, I noticed that it wasn’t judgnt I heard in his voice. It was pity. It was understanding... and compassion.

I nodded once. "I still do... and I know you think so too."

He didn’t say anything else because truthfully, there was nothing left to be said. He simply pulled into a hug and pressed his lips on my forehead.

I do not know for how long we stood there with him hugging , plus his sweet warmth seeping into my cashre sweater, but by the ti he finally let go, I knew that I felt better.

I knew that I no longer felt like shit for going to these asures just to find out what secrets laid behind my existence.

With a sigh, I let go of him and walked away with the intention of tucking the nylon bag into my bag... and as I did so, I couldn’t help but notice how the small box from yesterday was still hiding behind my large couch, away from public view.

In it had been a strange looking silver necklace with the letter ’S’ written boldly across its pendant.

I had no idea what it stood for, but it had managed to peak my curiosity and strengthen my resolve to go and et with Darius.

And I would... tonight.

Just as I turned into a dark corner and Louis followed, I spun around and grabbed the collar of his shirt, pulling him close to with a smile spreading across my face. I whisper- yelled; "I need you."

Louis’ eyes flashed with a weird maniacal glee as he looked up from head to toe. I noticed the way he glanced around as if scared of being found out before he leaned close to plant a quick kiss on my lips.

His voice was low and sweet as he slurred; "I always need you."

His words made blush and a weird sense of desire imdiately filled my body. Pushing it off, I slapped at his chest playfully before pulling him in for another kiss, moaning when my body trembled against his.

I cast another glance around us and when I realized that our ti together was quickly coming to an end, I asked; "What about what I talked to you about the last ti we t?" And at that, he frowned.

His brows scrunched together as he pinned with an intense stare; but after a mont, he finally snapped out of his reverie and asked; "What is that about?"

"My sister!" I hissed, hating the way the words sounded on my lips, And hating myself more for still being associated with Leilani.

If only she would drop dead right this minute!

As if noticing my annoyance, Louis cast a soft glance— one that I knew was strange coming from soone like him— and whispered; "You still want to kill her?"

"Yes," I answered without hesitation, causing Lou to frown at . "Will you do it or do I have to look for soone else to help with it?"

He looked contemplative for a mont, but after a while, shrugged; "What else do you need help with?"

And this is why I love him.

This is why I’m always grateful that he’s my mate. I an, who else would easily commit cris just to make happy?

I bead a smile at him and drawled; "I need to send a letter to Makayla."

He stilled. "The witch?"

"Yes, the witch." I snarled, rolling my eyes.

However, he was just about to respond when the sounds of heavy footsteps suddenly filled my ears and I froze, fearing that we had been found out.

"Chalice!" A voice called out, causing to freeze when I recognised it to be Zevran’s voice.

In my panic, I fell to the floor, pretending to faint just as soon as he walked in on us.

What I failed to notice however was the weird smile on his face, and the lack of ergency in his voice as he turned to Lou and asked;

"What happened to her?"

"She fainted!" Lou answered dramatically.

Zevran didn’t even bother to check on . He didn’t even spare another glance as he spat; "Pick her up then."

And with that, he left without uttering another word, leaving relieved yet suspicious as to why he didn’t seem surprised.

Goddess, I hope this man isn’t testing !
