I could tell that there was sothing going on with Zevran and that it also had sothing to do with Leilani, but no matter how hard I tried to pry it out of him, I just couldn’t because he was so closed off about it, so secretive too...
However, there were tis when I would walk into his office or soplace else to find him staring into space.
Other tis, he was receiving countless mails, making secretive phone calls or sending out investigators for things only he knew about; And now, I couldn’t even deny the fact that I was becoming genuinely worried.
I feared that he— or maybe Leilani— had gotten into so form of trouble; And goddess help , even though I was madly curious to know what it was about, I was also feeling an inexplicable sense of inadequacy.
I felt like I wasn’t enough when all I wanted to do was to protect them... to save them from whatever it was; But I couldn’t, and it was infuriating.
My eyes snagged on his silhouette sprawled lazily on a couch with his phone in hand. A few paperworks were scattered on the table in front of him and his hair—ssy from having his fingers running through them over and over again— fell over his forehead like an overgrown moss as he typed away on his phone.
Even though I had tried to be quiet while approaching him, he still heard walking over; and I didn’t miss the way his eyes widened slightly before he began to set away the items in front of him and smiled at , his eyes crinkling by the corners as he asked; "How long have you been standing there?’’
At his words, I lifted my eyes to et his gaze. And even though my first thought was to ask him what he was hiding, I couldn’t help but say; "Not long ago," hating the way the lie tasted like ash in my mouth. He looked up at then, as if sensing my hesitation; And sighed;
"Are you good?"
I couldn’t even lie so I shook my head. And deciding to go straight to the point, I imdiately asked; "Is there sothing you’re hiding?"
And at first, he looked like he was about to deny it. His bottom lip curved downward into a frown as he shook his head and muttered; "No."
But I knew that he was lying. I could see it in the way he couldn’t bring himself to look in the eyes. I could feel it in our bond... and it was stupid because how could I sense his lies but could not easily know what he was lying about?
Okay, maybe that didn’t co out right... What I ant to say is how could I not find out what the truth is without having to pry it out of him?
I plopped into the chair beside him but just as I tried to pick up one of the docunts scattered in front of him, he shot out to grab my hand and said in a voice so gruff, I had to do a double take. He said;
"No! That’s none of your business!"
"And since when did you start having businesses that don’t concern ?" I asked, feeling sothing akin to jealousy settle at the base of my stomach at the thought that he had things to do with Leilani that I couldn’t know about.
Hell, they may even be working together now, as we speak.
’Maybe they’re a team now.’ A voice whispered in my head; And guess what?
All I felt was rage.
Pure unadulterated rage!
I pushed away the thought before it would dampen my mood more than it already was; And Zevran seed to notice this too because then he shook his head and sighed; "It’s probably not what you think."
"I think it’s about Leilani." I bit back before I could stop myself; and from the way his Adam’s apple bobbed, I imdiately knew that I had hit the nail right where it hurt the most.
That I had him under my break lights now.
That I was right.
A frown tugged at my face when he rose then, imdiately packing up the discarded papers. When he turned to look at again, I didn’t miss the array of several strange emotions in his eyes— guilt, confusion, stubbornness.
He drawled; "You are right. It’s about Leilani."
"If it is about her, then why are you hiding it? Why does it seem like there’s sothing big happening and you’re the only one who knows about it?" I said, more like accusing him.
He cast another long glance, and after what felt like an eternity of thinking it over, he finally said; "Because she doesn’t even know that I am doing it. She doesn’t know that I’m trying to help her and I want to leave it that way."
"Can I help too?" I blurted out even before I could help myself, and again, he turned to look at . And as if suddenly realising how impossible it would be to convince otherwise, he said;
"Okay, but on one condition."
"Anything," I rushed out, knowing fully well that I could even give out my kidney if only it would an that she would have one extra for ergencies.
"I cannot tell you everything I know," he said softly as if talking to a child. "But you’ll help find out why a particular Lycan Alpha has set his sights on her and what he wants with her. You’ll also help find out what secrets her parents are hiding... and you can start by torturing it out of them in their cells."
"You can leave the torturing to ," a voice suddenly called out, causing Zevran and I to turn to the doorway, only to find Caelum standing there with his hands on his waists.
I groaned.
Why?
Because Caelum was a brute and I ant it in every sense.
There was a reason he was the least favorite triplet amongst us. A reason a lot of people found it difficult to reach a negotiation with him.
If you’ve ever watched the Originals, then he was the pri Kol amongst the Mikaelson brothers.
I shook my head. "No."
"But I want to." He seethed. "I’ve always wanted to. Moreover, I have a few questions of my own to ask Beta Malakai and his wife." He added, and knowing that I couldn’t possibly change his mind, especially not now that he’s set it to this, I shrugged and snorted;
"Okay."
"Okay?" This ti, it was a stunned Zevran who echoed my words.
I shrugged again. "Yes. But don’t kill them."
"Ahh, I would never!" He answered delightfully; And with that, he turned and walked away without another word.
But sothing about the gleam in his eyes made slightly scared. Not of him... but of the things he could do to them.

A POV that’s unimportant but important.
Agnes sat tied to a chair, trembling all over as she looked into the eyes of the man she loved. The man who she used to think loved her just as much... the man who had promised her the heavens and the earth in one sentence.
Her heart raced when her eyes t his red rimd ones. She slled the booze on his breath, sensed the rage in his blood... and the hatred.
But she couldn’t understand why he suddenly hates her.
Why he, the man who used to let her do anything to him, could no longer stand her presence anymore... and why he makes her do all those terrible things now.
She tried to speak but her mouth was gagged. He always gags her.
He sneered; "Do you know where she lives?"
Whenever he says the word: ’She’, Agnes would imdiately know who he was talking about— Leilani. But she would rather die than betray her a second ti.
She would rather be tortured by her lover for all of eternity than betray the one person she’s ever loved more than herself.
When he realised that she wouldn’t respond, he bared his teeth and smacked her face so hard, her head lolled to the side.
But still, Agnes remained firm in her resolve.
"Have you ever t with her at her house?" He continued, but still nothing.
"Do you have her cell number?"
Silence.
His eyes flashed wildly as he leaned away to rest his back against the wall behind him, his voice as cold as ice as he spat;
"Okay then, since you’ve gone deaf, maybe I would have to torture your hearing abilities back into you. So what do you say? Do I whip you? Skin you? Or fuck you?"
Agnes trembled.
She wanted none of those. None at all.
She simply wanted to sleep.
Her heart raced violently when he began to unbuckle the clasps of his belt, and instantly... just instantly, she knew what was coming.
Her heart fell.
