Her thoughts, Cora Jorney would no longer understand.
To prevent this sense of helplessness from spreading, she said indifferently, “I understand, Mom. I’m hanging up now. Take good care of Dad.”
“Mm, you don’t have to worry about your father. With the money funded by Jesse Rowan, the Harry Family will get through this crisis soon, and your dad’s health will improve day by day. As for you, don’t overthink anything—just focus on your work and try to accept Jesse. This ti, it’s all thanks to him. “Regret?” Joan Harry softly chewed over these two words, a cold sneer curling at the corners of her lips.
Jesse Rowan was nothing but a demon.
And this demon always behaved like an angel in front of others.
Yet, even that couldn’t conceal his demonic nature.
“Alright, Joan, you take care now. It’s raining today, wear more layers, don’t catch a cold.”
“Mom, I want to go to the company and take a look. Maybe I can help a little.”
“There’s no need. Your dad’s people are managing the company. You don’t understand the business, and you’d only end up complicating things. CEO Laban is very dedicated; he’ll handle everything perfectly without us needing to worry at all.”
“Mom!”
“That’s enough. Just stay in your lane. What you need to do now is accept Jesse and have a proper relationship with him.”
After that, Cora Jorney had nothing left to say.
She had said all she wanted to.
Joan Harry felt utterly disconnected from her mother; she didn’t want to say anything more.
“Mom, then I’m hanging up.”
“Mm.”
Joan hung up the phone, her fingers trembling as she released it.
With a “clack,” the phone slipped from her palm and fell to the ground.
It was hard to describe the feeling—a hollow emptiness.
A chill seeped through her skin, like she’d been drenched by rain.
Joan sat on the sofa just like that, motionless.
Outside, the rain continued to fall. Cold drops hit the windows, creating crisp icy sounds, mingled occasionally with the rustle of swaying pines and bamboos.
She sat hugging her knees, resembling a statue.
She sat there from noon until night.
The maid was the first to notice sothing was wrong and was startled.
Why wasn’t Miss Harry wearing clothes, sitting on the sofa like that—for a whole half day?
The sky had already turned dark, and Mr. Rowan hadn’t co ho yet. The maid, scared and uncertain, didn’t dare enter the room and instead called Jesse Rowan.
When he answered, there was loud, chaotic music in the background.
“Hello, who is it?” Jesse Rowan’s displeased voice ca through, as if he’d been drinking.
The maid stamred nervously, “Mr., Mr. Rowan, Miss Harry seems, seems…”
“What Miss Harry? Which Miss Harry?” Jesse’s voice was loud. “I know plenty of Miss Harrys.”
“The one at Koi Garden,” the maid said, taken aback.
“What’s wrong? She planning to jump off a building?”
“No.”
“Trying to slit her wrists?”
“No.”
“Well then, what’s the matter? Why are you calling ? Do you have to ruin my mood?” Jesse said, his tone full of irritation.
The maid didn’t dare speak further and murmured quietly, “Mr. Rowan, Miss Harry’s condition doesn’t seem good. She’s been sitting on the sofa all day without moving.”
“She’s just a log. Logs naturally don’t move. What more could you expect from a log?”
The maid was left completely speechless, unable to retort.
“Mr. Rowan, then, then sorry to bother you.”
“For trivial matters like this, don’t co bothering next ti.”
“Mr. Rowan… will you be coming back tonight?”
“Miss ?” Jesse Rowan shot back teasingly, his voice laced with amusent.
