He took off his suit jacket and opened the car door.

Maxwell Peary had only uttered those three words before he noticed sothing was wrong with Nia Mitchell.
"Why are you crying?" Maxwell Peary tossed his suit jacket onto the backseat, his expression anxious as he looked at her.
"I’m okay."
Nia Mitchell shook her head. The line was still silent; she wasn’t even sure if Fiona Sutton was still listening.
Maxwell Peary realized she was on a call and quietly closed his door.
On the other end of the line, Fiona Sutton suddenly heard a man’s voice and, for a mont, couldn’t process it.
That man... that was her husband, wasn’t it? Maxwell Peary?
"Can we et tomorrow?" Nia Mitchell bit her lip, struggling to hold back the tears welling up in her eyes.
Seeing her like this, her eyes brimming with tears she fought to hold back, lted Maxwell Peary’s heart.
"I don’t want to see you."

With that, Fiona Sutton hung up and slowly sank to the ground.
Under the dim yellow glow of the streetlight, she suddenly burst into sobs, oblivious to the stares of passersby or to Charles Northwood standing beside her.
