Looking at Nia Mitchell’s petite figure, Maxwell Peary felt extraordinarily delighted.
"Okay."
Uncharacteristically, a flirtatious warmth touched his features. He shot her an intense look, the corner of his lip twitching into a smirk, before driving off.
Nia Mitchell watched the car until the Rolls-Royce disappeared from sight, then she turned and headed towards University A.
The campus is the purest, most pristine place. Here, one can slow down and appreciate the natural changes of the four seasons. She had been to the university just a few days ago for her graduation thesis, yet returning today felt as if ages had passed. It was as if a long, long ti had passed, and everything here was but a distant mory. Even the sound of raindrops pattering on the dappled ground was lodious.
Nia Mitchell continued walking under her umbrella. Not far ahead, as she rounded a corner, she spotted a figure near the cafeteria. A figure in white stood there holding an umbrella, rain striking it and sliding off the edges, dripping onto the asphalt. Against the curtain of rain, he stood out, strikingly conspicuous, involuntarily drawing everyone’s attention.
"Why are you here?"
Nia Mitchell looked at Charles Northwood in surprise. Then she rembered this was the cafeteria. Perhaps he just finished breakfast, she mused. The thought made her feel a little awkward.
"I was waiting for you."
His simple words, low and magnetic, sent an unconscious tremor through her heart.
"Huh?"
Nia Mitchell was taken aback; she hadn’t told him she would be coming to the university today.
"I knew you would co," Charles Northwood explained with a smile, as if sensing her confusion.
Nia Mitchell blinked, a wave of guilt washing over her.
"But how did you know I would take this path?"
There were many paths to the dormitory; how did he know she would pass by the cafeteria entrance?
"I know you better than anyone else."
They had been friends since high school; how could he not know her habits? Besides, back in their school days, she always took this path to the dormitory.
Nia Mitchell stopped in her tracks and lowered her head.
"I’m sorry, I didn’t an to deceive you all."
She knew an apology couldn’t solve anything, but she would feel even worse if she didn’t say it.
"It’s okay. You know that no matter what, I won’t bla you."
His voice was soft, yet it wasn’t drowned out by the campus buzz.
"Thank you."
His waiting for her here ant he had forgiven her.
"You don’t need to be so formal with . But you’ll have to face it by yourself later."
Nia Mitchell smiled and nodded.
"Is...he good to you?" Charles Northwood finally asked, after a long hesitation, the question that had been weighing on his mind.
"He’s pretty good," Nia Mitchell answered quickly. Although things hadn’t been entirely smooth lately, she had always seen and appreciated Maxwell Peary’s kindness towards her.
"That’s good then," he said awkwardly, his pace gradually slowing.
If only this path had no end, he could keep walking with her like this. That wouldn’t be bad at all, Charles Northwood thought.
But just as the two of them walked side by side towards the dormitory building, not far off, a woman holding an umbrella suddenly stopped.
Tara Jason clutched her umbrella tightly, standing frozen as she stared fixedly at Charles Northwood and Nia Mitchell.
Charles Northwood’s heart clenched. Seeing that look in Tara Jason’s eyes, he knew she had misunderstood. The scenes from last night replayed in his mind. Tara hadn’t given him a chance to explain, fleeing in panic instead.
