Charles Northwood froze and imdiately stood up. "Yes, I am," he confird. He anxiously watched the nurse, fearing she might say sothing he didn’t want to hear.
"The baby can’t be saved," the nurse said, her expression grim. "We need to perform surgery now. Please sign here."
Charles Northwood was taken aback, his fingertips trembling. The baby can’t be saved? Impossible!
"The child must be saved!" Charles Northwood pleaded, having lost his usual composure. "I beg you, please try harder, will you?" At this mont, he truly seed like a father, standing there helplessly watching the nurse, trying to grasp at the last straw.
"I’m sorry, the baby can’t be saved," the nurse repeated gravely. "Any further delay could endanger the mother’s life as well."
Charles Northwood froze. With a trembling right hand, he took the pen the nurse handed him. "You must keep her safe... you absolutely must..." he choked out, signing his na on the paper.
"We will do our best," the nurse said softly, then turned and re-entered the operating room.
...
Watching the operating room doors close once again, Charles Northwood slumped into his chair. The baby can’t be saved. Fiona Sutton... Fiona Sutton... He sat there with his eyes closed, filled with sorrow.
A voice asked, "Are you the patient’s family?"
Suddenly, he heard the question again. Charles Northwood dazedly opened his eyes and looked up at the nurse standing before him.
"I am," he replied, his voice hoarse. He looked confused and afraid. Did sothing happen to Fiona Sutton?
"Did sothing happen to the mother?" Charles Northwood demanded, suddenly standing and gripping the nurse’s arm tightly. "Speak up!"
"Calm down!" the nurse yelped, wrenching her arms free. "If you don’t, I’ll have to call the Security Guards!" She took two steps back. "The mother is stable, and the baby has also been saved for now. Please go and complete her admission paperwork. Given the expectant mother’s current condition, she must be hospitalized to protect the pregnancy."
As the nurse prattled on, Charles Northwood’s mind went blank. The baby... was saved? But... didn’t he just sign that paper? Didn’t they say the baby couldn’t be saved?
"Didn’t you say the baby couldn’t be saved?" he asked, bewildered.
Upon hearing this, the expression on the nurse’s face was priceless. "Are you even the baby’s father? What kind of person says sothing like that?" After saying this, the nurse turned and left.
The baby... is still alive? He stood there in a daze, rubbing his temples. Was all that just a dream? Or was it his imagination? Was it because he was so scared that he...? Thank goodness. As long as they’re both okay, that’s all that matters.
The admission procedures were quickly completed. Fiona Sutton lay in bed in her Hospital Gown, her face pale, but she was sleeping peacefully.
"You’re the patient’s family, I presu?" A middle-aged woman in a white coat approached; she was Fiona Sutton’s attending Doctor. "She needs soone with her 24/7. Also, please notify us when she wakes up; we’ll co back then to do another checkup."
"Understood," Charles Northwood replied. He carefully noted this, and the attending Doctor nodded.
"Also," the Doctor continued, "her emotions are highly unstable. It’s best not to agitate her further, or the baby might genuinely be at risk."
Charles Northwood nodded imdiately. "Is there anything else I need to be aware of?"
"Not much else. We’ll prescribe so Fetal-Stabilizing dicine and have it sent over shortly. Ensure she takes it on schedule." The attending Doctor said this, added a few more instructions, and then left.
