The crowd wanted the easy version.

Ty could feel it through the balcony crystals, through the Na Office feed, through the phones still alive in the school basent. People did not want to be cruel. Most of them wanted to be done being confused. A hurt face and a helpful skeleton were easier to arrange than a stolen body, a bone half, a death mark, a missing finger, and a woman on Earth trying not to love the wrong voice.

Zunoder understood that better than anyone in the room.

He appeared on the largest crystal above Applause Junction with the noodle woman behind him. Her hair had co loose. Her hands shook. He had placed himself slightly in front of her, not shielding her entirely, just enough that caras could call it protection.

"They will show you the skeleton saving people," Zunoder said. "They should. Monsters can be useful. Blades can be useful. A prison door can keep thieves out. That does not make the door your brother."

The line landed. Ty heard the crowd take it in.

JJ stood beside him on the damaged balcony, one arm still around Yun-Jin's waist. "I hate that one."

Heissman leaned against the wall, breathing harder than he wanted anyone to notice. "Because it is rhetorically competent."

"Can you insult him in smaller words?"

"He is a poisonous little stage actor."

"Better."

The basent feed crackled. Jade ca into view on a phone screen held by Waddell. She looked worse than she had ten minutes ago. The gauze over her right eye glowed at the edge. The white reflection behind her had vanished, but no one looked relieved.

Zunoder turned toward her image. "Jade. Ask yourself what you want to be true."

She said nothing.

"You want the bones to be him because the bones saved you. You want the face to be false because the face hurt you. That is not proof. That is grief choosing the hand that was kinder today."

Soone in the arena murmured agreent.

Ty's fla went quiet.

Omina stepped to his side. "He is pushing you toward a speech."

"I know."

"Do not give one."

Zunoder smiled as if he had heard her. "Bone Half. Tell them what makes you human."

There it was. Clean. Public. Poisoned.

Ty looked at the rescued vendor girl. She was crying with both hands clamped around Yun-Jin's sleeve. He looked at JJ's panel, cracked and bleeding pink light. He looked at the crystal showing Jade, who had already paid for looking at him.

Human. The word had too many owners.

He had bones. He had fire. He had a finger that rembered being used like a key. He had won bleeding money, pride, authority, and blood because they had stood too close and called it choice. None of that fit inside a neat answer.

"Ty," Jade said through the phone.

He looked at her.

"Do not answer his version of you."

Zunoder's smile flickered.

Good.

Jade gripped the edge of the milk crate until her knuckles went pale. "I will ask."

Waddell muttered, "That sounds dangerous."

"It is."

Rima, sowhere behind her, said, "At least we agree."

Jade ignored them. "When I asked if you were coming back, what did you owe ?"

The question moved through both worlds.

The noodle woman looked at Zunoder. The crowd leaned in. Mason Bell, visible at the bottom edge of the phone screen, clutched his repaired dinosaur and whispered, "What is the answer?"

No adult helped him.

Zunoder opened his mouth. A good lie should have been easy. Hope. A promise. I love you. Any crowd would have understood those.

The body knew the real answer.

Zunoder's jaw locked.

Ty said it for him. "The truth."

Jade's face changed, not soft, not happy, but certain enough to hurt. "He told he did not know."

Silence spread.

She kept going because now stopping would be worse. "He loved badly sotis. He was late. He joked when he should have apologized. He made impossible promises about little things and refused the big easy lies when I needed them most. The skeleton I saw did the sa. A child asked if he was coming back, and the answer was ugly."

Mason Bell lifted his dinosaur higher. "He said he didn't know."

Tyree took the boy gently out of the cara view. "That is enough. Back behind ."

Zunoder's sorrow cracked. Half a second. Maybe less. The crowd saw sothing hungry look out through Ty's face.

Waddell stepped beside Jade. "Shelter record confirms. White skeleton answered with uncertainty when a lie would have improved compliance."

Kieran followed, bandaged arm held tight. "Behavioral consistency confirms."

Rima leaned into view. "Manipulation failure noted."

"That is not an official category," Waddell said.

"It should be."

The Na Office feed stamped sowhere below.

BEHAVIORAL PROOF WEIGHT INCREASED

Zunoder recovered fast. Too fast for comfort. "So your proof is that he disappoints you honestly?"

Jade looked at him through the phone. "My proof is that you knew the mory, but you did not understand the wound."

Ty lifted his sickles.

Zunoder saw the movent and pointed to the noodle woman without touching her.

"Careful, Bone Half. She followed because she wanted to know whether rcy still counted when it ca from the wrong mouth."

The woman flinched at being nad without a na.

Ty stopped.

Zunoder smiled again.

"There. Still easy."

Ty felt the old anger rise with a clean edge, the kind that wanted to beco speed. Zunoder had placed a person between them and called it choice because he understood Ty too well. That was the insult beneath the danger. He did not only know Ty's mories. He knew the shape of Ty's failures and where to stand so Ty would repeat them.

Jade saw it before Ty moved.

"Do not prove him right by hating him first," she said.

The line hit harder than command. Ty's sickles lowered by one inch. Zunoder noticed. So did the crowd. The woman beside Zunoder noticed most of all. She looked at the skeleton, then at the man wearing Ty's face, and confusion replaced the pity she had been feeding him.

"You know him," she said to Zunoder.

"I wear enough of him."

"No." Her voice shook. "You know where to hurt him."

For the first ti, Zunoder looked at her like she had beco inconvenient.

Then the route behind him opened, black and narrow, and Zunoder stepped backward into it with the woman following.

The crowd did not cheer this ti.

The silence did not count as victory.

It was enough to make Zunoder angry.
