Zunoder ran because staying would have made the truth too heavy.

He hated that. He preferred exits that looked like choices. This one slled like burnt crystal and failure. The long passage closed behind him in uneven bites, each blind public crystal going dark after his shoulder passed. Ty's body wanted to turn back toward Jade's voice. The missing finger that no longer belonged to this body ached anyway.

"Pathetic," Zunoder told the hand.

The hand twitched.

Ahead, the woman stumbled after him. She had followed before she understood she had chosen. That made her useful. That made her dangerous. People who chose under fear often spent the rest of their lives defending the choice.

"Stop," she said.

He did.

He stopped because stopping looked less like running, not because she ordered him.

She stood three paces behind him, breathing hard, one sleeve torn, eyes wet from the thing she had almost fallen through. The route painted red light along her face.

"You let fall."

Zunoder leaned against the wall and let Ty's exhaustion show. "I let him choose."

"That is not the sa."

"No."

The honesty hit her harder than denial would have. He watched her try to arrange him into a shape she could hate cleanly. She failed. Good. Maybe was a better prison than love.

"Why did I follow you?" she asked.

"Because the face mattered."

"I do not know you."

"Most people do not know what they believe in until it starts bleeding."

She looked back the way they had co. The route had sealed. No balcony. No skeleton. No crowd. Only red dark and the faint sound of sothing knocking too far ahead.

"Are you Ty?"

He almost said yes. The body wanted it. The lie wanted it. The road probably wanted it too.

Instead he said, "I am what ca loose."

She flinched.

"That is not an answer."

"It is the one I have."

Behind the sealed route, Ty would be standing with the witnesses and the woman he loved and the sponsor who refused to drop him. Zunoder had lost the easy claim. Fine. Easy claims were for people without patience.

He needed a longer road.

The passage wall flickered. For half a second it showed Earth again. Not Jade this ti. Caleb Morris sat on the basent floor with his wrapped arm in his lap. Sha made him look smaller than his injury.

Waddell crouched in front of him, not kind, not cruel.

"You heard the voice," Waddell said. "That does not make you guilty."

Caleb stared at his hand. "I opened it."

"You started to. We closed it."

"Because I thought it was him."

Jade's voice ca from off screen. "That is why the rule exists."

Caleb looked toward her. "But what if so of him is in there?"

The basent went quiet.

Zunoder smiled.

Thank you, Caleb.

The red wall beside him trembled.

EARTH RECOGNITION QUALITY: WEAK BUT VIABLE

The woman read the words before they faded. "What does that an?"

"It ans people are honest when they doubt."

"You are using them."

"Everyone uses everyone. So people call it command. So call it love. So call it rescue."

"And you?"

Zunoder looked at Ty's hand. "I am learning."

That sounded almost true. He kept it.

The passage opened ahead into a narrow service tunnel lined with old crystal sockets. They were not arena crystals. Too red. Too deep. Sothing on the other side of the tunnel knocked again.

Once.

The woman stepped back. "What is that?"

"A door I should probably not open."

"Then do not."

Zunoder smiled with Ty's mouth. "You are new to this."

The tunnel shook. A strip of paper slid out from the wall and slapped itself against the crystal beside him.

FACE USER EXIT LIMITATION:

EARTH PRIMARY RECOGNITION REQUIRED FOR STABLE CROSSING

CURRENT RECOGNITION: INSUFFICIENT

ALTERNATE ROUTE: DEMON CONTRACT RESIDUE

RISK: SEVERE

PERSONAL CONSEQUENCE: LIKELY

He touched the strip. It burned.

Good. A route that hurt was still a route.

Behind him, the woman whispered, "If you are not Ty, why are you trying to get to Earth?"

The answer ca too fast from the stolen ribs. Jade. Ho. Proof. Hunger. He swallowed all of them.

"Because Earth decides what the face ans."

"And if Earth says no?"

"Then I make the question worse."

She should have run. She did not. Maybe she was brave. Maybe she was broken. Maybe she had already decided that following a terrible answer was better than being left with no answer at all.

The tunnel opened another inch.

Far behind the sealed route, a blue spark cut through black crystal. Ty had found the seam. Of course he had.

Zunoder looked back and laughed once. "Still coming."

The woman looked frightened by the relief in his voice.

"Do you want him to catch you?"

No. Yes. Not like this.

"I want him to understand losing."

The blue spark grew brighter.

Zunoder stepped into the red tunnel. Heat closed around him. The woman followed, not close enough to touch, close enough to count. The route sealed behind them just as Ty's sickle broke through the outer crystal.

The woman looked back at the last second.

Ty saw her face through the closing seam. She was not convinced anymore. That should have comforted him. It did not. Doubt could free a person, but it could also keep her walking because turning around ant admitting she had followed the wrong man through the wrong door.

Zunoder knew that. He did not touch her. He did not order her. He let her carry her own mistake because mistakes beca loyal when people were ashad of them.

Ty drove the sickle deeper. Blue fire crawled along the seam and found nothing to hold. The route had already chosen its next law.

"Move," JJ said behind him.

He did not.

"Ty."

"I can cut it."

Omina's hand closed around his shoulder. "You can cut sothing. That is not the sa as cutting the right thing."

He hated how often she was right.

For one second, Ty saw him.

Zunoder raised two fingers in Ty's stolen hand. Not a threat. A count.

Then the red tunnel swallowed him.

Ty's sickle hit empty wall.

On Earth, Jade's phones stayed black.

In Lost Property, the missing finger in Ty's hand pointed toward the sealed red route and tapped once. Slow. Angry. Afraid.

The chase was not over.

It had beco larger.
