The Demon King's soul-door knocked once.

Every guard in the storage chamber stopped breathing on purpose. The door had rules carved into the floor around it in red script deep enough for old blood to pool inside the grooves.

HOLD.

Sanguina had written that first rule after the third storage breach and the seventh argunt about whether souls counted as prisoners, resources, guests, or future disasters.

Elithira stood at the edge of the circle with both hands behind her back and decided she hated the sound.

Knock.

The chamber under the Demon King's palace had no wind, no windows, and no polite reason to make noise. Soul jars lined the walls in black iron shelves. So glowed. So smoked. So had nas scratched into glass by fingernails that no longer existed.

Ziues Riamone's jar sat three shelves above eye level, wrapped in two red chains and one silver ribbon that had not been there yesterday.

The ribbon was Angelic.

Elithira looked toward the nearest guard. "Nobody touches it."

The young demon swallowed. "Princess, it is a door."

"A door that stores souls."

"Yes."

"So if it knocks, we treat that as rude and lethal."

He nodded too fast.

Sanguina arrived without footsteps. She did that when she wanted people to rember she had not died in all the centuries when dying would have been convenient for her enemies.

"When did it start?"

"After the face split stabilized," Elithira said.

Sanguina's mouth tightened. "Ty."

"Which piece?"

"That is the problem."

Elithira hated that answer because it sounded like court language, and court language usually ant soone had hidden a bomb under a legal term.

The door did not knock again, and the silence tightened every face in the chamber.

Ziues's jar flared blue-white. A voice ca from inside, muffled by glass and humiliation.

"I do not wish to alarm anyone, but the storage architecture is listening in a very unfriendly manner."

Elithira looked up. "You are awake?"

"I have been awake. Your accommodations discourage restful self-reflection."

"Good."

"Rude child."

Sanguina lifted one hand. The chains around his jar tightened.

"Speak usefully."

Ziues made a sound that might have been a laugh if he had lungs and dignity. "Sothing is counting ownership through the door."

The chamber temperature dropped.

"Ownership of what?" Elithira asked.

"The dead man with too many claimants. Your father's expensive skeleton mistake."

The Demon King entered on that line.

He arrived without announcent or ceremony, only pressure, black and red and old enough to make the younger guards stare at the floor. He looked at the soul-door. The door remained quiet.

Smart door.

"No nas," the Demon King said.

Elithira lowered her head. "We have already used one."

"Not again."

On the far wall, a chain moved.

Zenith hung in a suspended seal of black iron and pale light, not asleep, not free, not dead. Angelic leverage wore captivity differently than demons did. She opened one eye.

"You finally shook the wrong shelf."

Elithira turned. "Explain."

Zenith smiled faintly. "No."

The Demon King looked at her, and the smile faded into calculation.

"The Angelics do not own the highest floor," Zenith said. "They only patrol the stairs."

Ziues's jar humd. "That taphor was almost useful."

"Be silent, Riamone."

"Gladly, after soone removes from decorative custody."

The red script in the floor changed.

HOLD beca REVIEW.

Every guard stepped back.

The Demon King did not.

He raised one hand and pressed his palm toward the air above the circle. A platinum shield ford between him and the door. Old contract marks crawled over it. For one breath, Ty's original red soul mark pulsed inside the spellwork before vanishing like an embarrassed witness.

Elithira saw it. So did Sanguina.

Neither spoke.

Gray words appeared on the door without fla, style, or rcy.

CLAIM CONFLICT DETECTED

SUBJECT: REDACTED BY ACTIVE NA STABILIZATION

PARTIES: BONE HALF, FACE USER, EARTH WITNESS RECORD, DEMON CONTRACT, REAPER CLAUSE, LOST PROPERTY CLAIMANT, UNDISCLOSED HIGHER INTERESTS

The Demon King's face hardened. "Do not answer it."

Elithira had many flaws. She was curious, proud, and occasionally too fond of stabbing problems that needed diplomacy. She was not stupid. She stayed quiet.

Sowhere far from the palace, a low-trust warning scratched against the edge of the door like a match dragged across stone.

DO NOT WAKE THE SOUL-DOOR.

Sanguina gave a short, humorless laugh. "Late warning."

"It is not awake," the Demon King said.

Ziues's jar dimd. "Majesty, I say this with all the respect available to a jar: that distinction feels optimistic."

The door surface rippled.

For one instant, Elithira saw other places inside it. Ty in a black passage, holding a finger against his hand with blue fire. Jade in a flooded basent, staring at dead phones while a white skeleton counted behind her. Zunoder walking through a red tunnel with Ty's face and soone else's doubt following him. Twelve empty helms turning in a dark room where Erebos was not visible, which made the room worse.

Then the images collapsed.

The door knocked once more.

The Demon King's shield thickened. "No."

The door listened.

The listening made it worse. The door considered refusal as if refusal were only information.

OVERRIDE REQUEST RECORDED

The palace alarms began to ring. Not invasion. Not breach.

Recognition.

The Demon King pressed harder against the shield. The old contract marks around his palm brightened one by one, red and platinum, each one a promise that had once sounded simpler than it was. Elithira had seen her father angry. She had seen him amused, cruel, patient, even tired. She had not often seen him refuse sothing that could hear him.

"Close the chamber," he said.

Sanguina did not ask whether he ant the guards or the door. She pointed with her blade, and the younger demons moved fast enough to prove fear had educational value. Iron shutters slamd down over the outer shelves. Three jars cracked from the pressure and sealed themselves again before anyone could scream.

Ziues's jar rattled. "If I may contribute a useful observation, the door appears less interested in opening than in being acknowledged."

"That is worse," Zenith said without opening her eye.

The Demon King did not disagree.

Every soul jar turned toward the door. Zenith closed her visible eye. Sanguina drew a blade with no flourish at all.

The Demon King looked older for one breath and more dangerous for the next.

The door displayed one final line.

CURRENT UNIVERSE CONTROL: CONTESTED.

It did not open.

The restraint felt like rcy.

For now.
