“I didn’t mean it like that.” Lian Mengzhu shook her head, quickly adding, “I just thought of this question suddenly, so I asked.”
She locked eyes with Ye Wanwan and pressed on, “Wanwan, you still haven’t answered my question. Have you ever thought about meeting your biological parents?”
Ye Wanwan felt uneasy when Lian Mengzhu asked. With so much going on, why now? She sensed her mother had a reason but couldn’t understand it.
She fell into silence, lost in thought.

After what felt like an eternity, Ye Wanwan finally spoke. She shook her head, meeting Lian Mengzhu’s gaze, and said, “Mother, I don’t want to see them.”
Then, she sought refuge in Lian Mengzhu’s embrace, whispering, “Mother, you and Father are my real parents. You’ve been the ones caring for me, nurturing me, all these years. They’re just strangers to me. So, I don’t want to see them.”
She wasn’t sure if her answer matched Lian Mengzhu’s expectations. But right now, she couldn’t leave the Ye family. All she could do was show her attachment to her mother, hoping to maintain their usual relationship.
“Is that so?” Lian Mengzhu’s eyes clouded with uncertainty. She reached out, gently patting Ye Wanwan’s head. “In that case, let’s drop it. But Wanwan, they’re not exactly strangers. Before everything happened, they were your aunt and uncle.”
Ye Wanwan froze, unsure why Lian Mengzhu said that. Hastily, she explained, “Mother, that’s not what I meant. I just feel…”
She trailed off, unsure how to express herself.
“Alright, no need to explain.” Lian Mengzhu shook her head gently, offering a soft smile. “Wanwan, I understand your feelings. You don’t have to explain further. Since you’re not fortable with it, I won’t bring it up again.”
Ye Wanwan breathed a sigh of relief at Lian Mengzhu’s words.
“Okay, don’t dwell on it,” Lian Mengzhu said, her smile unchanged. “Your priority now is to rest and recover.”
Ye Wanwan nodded. “Don’t worry, Mother. I will.”
“Okay.” Lian Mengzhu nodded. “Make sure to rest. Things have been hectic lately, and your father and I are tied up. We might not drop by often. I wanted to tell you so you wouldn’t fret. Just concentrate on resting for now.”
Ye Wanwan smiled. “Got it, Mother.”
After a bit more chat, Lian Mengzhu left.
The smile faded from Lian Mengzhu’s face as she stepped out. She glanced back at the closed door with a plex expression.
Though she didn’t show it to Ye Wanwan, she felt deeply disappointed by Ye Wanwan’s response.
She harbored deep resentment toward Lian Zixin. It was because of her that she and her biological daughter had been separated for eighteen years. Even though the truth was now out, their relationship seemed irreparable. Yet, Lian Zixin had never let Ye Wanwan down. Everything she did was for her daughter. Now, Ye Wanwan rejected Lian Zixin’s efforts, even eager to sever ties.
Such actions left her feeling bitterly disappointed, even questioning if Ye Wanwan was the person she thought she was.
But no matter what, she couldn’t abandon Ye Wanwan, whom she had raised for years. Yet, she couldn’t devote herself to Ye Wanwan as before, unsure if Ye Wanwan would one day treat her like she treated Lian Zixin.
With a helpless sigh, Lian Mengzhu headed back to her courtyard.
At that moment, she could only go back to her own yard. Her husband was likely staying in his study tonight. With such a big event happening, the impact on the Ye family would be huge. Her husband and the elders were probably discussing how to minimize the damage.

Huangfu Ruiling nodded, a glimmer of darkness crossing his gaze. “Ye Yikun deserves to die.”
“Even if you didn’t act, he wouldn’t last long,” Ye Leng’an said with a smile, shaking her head. “Besides, letting him die now would be too easy. It’s time for him to face the consequences of his actions.”
