“What are you worried about?” Ajax asked Aurexion once their privacy barrier was up.

Despite getting more used to the attention since he beca a noble, Ajax had to admit he was glad that the privacy barrier worked both ways, aning that the small distortion helped him ignore the rows of soldiers all lined up and looking towards him and Aurexion.

“I underestimated how ingrained your fighting style is to you.” Aurexion admitted.”You’ve gained two new Legendary Skills in a very short amount of ti and haven’t really had the chance to get used to them at all besides a few dungeons.”

Ajax knew that Aurexion was right. Despite relying on [Last Stand] Ajax hadn’t really done more than use the Skill as a baseline boost, he didn’t push himself to see just how powerful the boost could beco and how it scaled with different amounts of Stamina invested. Things that had beco muscle mory for [Mana Syphon]’s boost were things he hadn’t even tried to learn yet about [Last Stand] despite the latter being solely a boosting Skill.

“Are you worried that I won’t be able to gain a Pseudo-Mythic Skill if I don’t learn how to use the Skill better?” Ajax asked, he knew that everything that could be said about [Last Stand] was just as true if not more about [Physically Enhanced Battlemage Style] which had seen even less use than the latter.

“Just the opposite actually.” Aurexion surprised Ajax.

“You’re worried I’ll gain the Skill?” Ajax’s eyebrows shot up.

“You’re not practicing with your Style Skill almost all.” Aurexion countered. “I can understand being comfortable with what works but it is of utmost importance that you learn more about those Legendary Skills while they still have their safety limits imposed by the Skills themselves.”

That was when Ajax realized what Aurexion was so worried about. As the latest fight had just proved the enemy champions could actually push Ajax, if he was faced with a physically focused champion without Aurexion’s support Ajax would actually have a hard fight on his hands. If the need pushed him to unlock the Pseudo-Mythic Skill and he wasn’t used to his Legendary Skills that were being used to create the Skill it was very much possible that Ajax would do more damage than help.

“So what do you suggest I do?” Ajax asked.

“Lean into [Physically Enhanced Battlemage Style].” Aurexion’s answer was determined. “Train with it until you learn to trust it. That Skill is the entire foundation of what makes it safe for you to use a Pseudo-Mythic Skill. Start off by sparing with it without the use of your other boosting Skills and once you have a handle on that add them in, one at a ti then both at once.”

Aurexion knew that with so much variety and the number of supporting Skills Ajax’s style Skill was going to grow quickly, style Skills were usually slow to level since the person who gained them already was practicing that sa fighting style from before. But with the number of ways Ajax had to alter his style just based on how much he wanted to conserve Mana, Stamina, push his body or even lean into different elents Aurexion had a small hope that the style Skill might even reach its first threshold before Ajax gained the Pseudo-Mythic Skill so long as the small pause in combat between champions happened like the strategists predicted it will on this battlefield following the last battle.

“You’re going to need a sparring partner for that.” Aurexion continued. “Unfortunately I would not be a good pairing there because of my build. What about the old elf, how much do you trust him, his build seems like an ideal one to let you spar against.”

“He is a friend…” Ajax started slowly. “But he is still from another kingdom and he will be able to learn a lot about my Skills if he spars with .”

“He is a pure caster.” Aurexion pointed out. “If your training pays off once you have your Pseudo-Mythic Skill, any pure Mage will have problems reacting to you. From what I have seen he seems like the best person to help you but for starters you can spar with others who are weaker as you get a better grasp of your Skill.”

Ajax took Aurexion’s advice and had to admit that his bond was right. He hadn’t been relying on his newest Legendary Skills as much as he probably should have. Ajax wasn’t sure if he wasn’t doing so because of how used he was with his old style Skill or if he was worried about how the period of weakness he was suffering from even now after using [Last Stand] made him wary of pushing the Skill but it was sothing that would beco a liability for him if he didn’t learn more about them before they beca components of his Pseudo-Mythic Skill.

With their conversation over Ajax lowered the privacy barrier, the mass of people watching them had been inching closer and closer as ti dragged on, already they had closed half the distance. With the barrier dropping however Arianwyn felt confident in approaching Ajax, though she still remained wary of his new bond. She knew how protective so bonds could be, it took Regalia years before she would allow healers to approach her after she was injured during spars without hissing at them threateningly.

“Ajax, I wanted to thank you for coming to help .” Arianwyn said as she approached. “ It seems like the difference in strength between us has only grown since the last ti I saw you.”

“Hello Arianwyn.” Ajax returned her smile. “No need to feel too indebted, the only reason Aranor or the other Sylvanthal champions weren’t there to protect you was because we knew they were targeting you and we decided I was the best option to engage there.”

Ajax’s words brought so relief to Arianwyn as it reassured her that she hadn’t been left exposed to enemy champions in the middle of a battle.

“I’d also like to introduce you to my bond Aurexion.” Ajax said with a playful tone as he introduced his bond in the sa way nobles usually introduced new family mbers to their peers.. “He seed quite impressed by your Domain.”

“A pleasure to make your acquaintance Aurexion.” Arianwyn didn’t miss a beat as she played along with Ajax’s ga. “I am Arianwyn, currently the crown princess of Sylvanthal.”

The playful look on Arianwyn’s face turned to awe as Aurexion spoke, since there wasn’t much ti between Ajax’s arrival and the start of the battle Aurexion speaking ca as a shock to most of the soldiers that were doing their best to eavesdrop.

“Good to et you Lady Arianwyn, I am Aurexion, nephew of Duchess Khalystra under the gold dragon emperor.”

Aurexion had explained more to Ajax about how dragons had mostly split into seven smaller kingdoms of their own each under a dragon emperor. Unlike most other Ascended races greed was too common a trait for dragons to have the race be unified into one single chain of command and as such multiple cohorts had ended up forming and mostly competing with one another. It was a good thing dragons were so long lived and their birth rates were so low or else gathering the resources they needed to grow would have been impossible.

“I know it might seem odd to you but it’d be best if you think of Aurexion as a person with the body of a dragon instead of as a beast with the intelligence of a humanoid.” Ajax offered the princess a way to better understand Aurexion’s sapience. “Though I can assure you all the Ascended races are sapient and I have encountered a number of Awakened races that are sapient as well during my travels through the Wild Lands.”

Arianwyn’s years of political training served her well in handling the shock of Aurexion’s intelligence. It wasn’t long until she had no issues interacting with him as she and Ajax caught up with each other. The sa however could not be said about her own bond, Regalia seed to have an instinctive fear of the dragon at the sa ti it was fascinated by the larger reptile.

“We need to get this done quickly.” Regis said as he looked towards the rest of his squad. “You have sent word to the Duke, yes?”

“It’s done.” The team’s scout confird. “But from the looks of it the dragon has lost interest in its prize, so why are we rushing?”

“Aranor not only took the prisoner's spacial ring but made him unlock it before he did.” Regis inford the rest of the squad that hadn’t been there when the prisoner was taken to the healing tent. “It won’t be long until he realizes who we have and from the way he confronted us earlier I think he suspects sothing already.”

“Should we really be risking so much just for the safe return of a bastard?” The scout asked the question that was running through the minds of most of the people present. “We’d be making enemies of two champions and a dragon.”

“The Duke is hoping to legitimize the bastard and have him beco his heir since all his legitimate children are girls.” Regis said with resignation. “He’s been our benefactor more than the council ever was, we owe him this much.”

While all this was going on the general in charge of the beastkin force that just disengaged from the previous battle was livid as he was given a report of the battle. “A dragon flew away with my son!!!!”
