Eldest Prince P.O.V.
“We’ve all had our first engagents.” I reported to my father and brother.
“Anybody die?” There wasn’t much worry in my father’s voice but I knew that was because of a simple deduction, if we had lost soone so soon I would have made the report differently.
“No, a few of us ca back wounded but other than that it was all fine.” I ran my fingers through the feathers of my bond, unfortunately he wasn’t at the level where he would be safe taking place in a fight between champions. He was close to that level of power but if he was to join the fighting he would beco my biggest weakness and that alone would make him a target.
“How did Ajax do?” my brother’s voice ca through.
“Better than any of us.” I answered with a chuckle. “He backed up Firebeard who was ambushed, they killed two of their new champions and captured Redfang.”
I knew why they were asking about Ajax, he was the big unknown, he had the level of power but he lacked the experience. Aurexion did a lot to alleviate that but the dragon also all but admitted he wasn’t all that experienced, it was just that when compared to Ajax any veteran had plenty of experience.
“The result is great.” Father said. “But what do you think about the report of the fight?”
“It was a bad first fight for him to have.” I knew what they wanted, but before I gave my analysis I wanted to praise Ajax. “He completely countered the champion he was fighting and Aurexion managed to take out the other champion in record ti as well, the surprise factor really played in their favour. Catching Redfang wasn’t easy afterwards but there wasn’t all that much risk in a three versus one.”
“Then why are you saying it was a bad first fight for him?” My brother asked.
“Because it might cause him to beco overconfident.” I explain. “There isn't much that I am worried can kill Aurexion in this war. At least not quickly enough that he can’t escape it. But Ajax isn’t as durable. Against mages he is a nace but physical fighters can still pose a big risk to him, I am worried he might start thinking he is unbeatable.” It was one of the few tis I was thankful for Ajax’s paranoia, and even if I didn’t know what tricks he was still hiding it was good to know he had an ace up his sleeve.
“What did you do about it?” Father asked, he knew too well.
“I requested to have him reassigned to one of the stall points with Aranor.” I answered. “A friendly face that will look out for him, soone that will be well complented by Ajax and Aurexion. The three of them together should an they won’t be forced into a fight any ti soon giving Ajax ti to acclimate.”
“Your highness, urgent report.” My second in command enters the tent but stops short of entering the privacy sphere around . He gently places a scroll on the ground and rolls it through the barrier to . I ignore the scroll at first and focus on the details of my second in command to ensure he isn’t an impostor before carefully unfurling the scroll and reading the report.
“Ajax got in another fight.” I can tell my words are tight, he was supposed to get ti there before his next battle. The only good news is that they must have had more champions there than the enemy expected so the fight should have gone in their favor.
Love this novel? Read it on to ensure the author gets credit.
I quickly read through the contents of the scroll and am relieved to find out that got out unscathed though apparently he was being pressured in a two versus one fight before Aurexion joined the frey with Aranor and caused the enemy to flee.
After I share the report with my father and brother I can already expect the question. “Are you going to have him moved again?” My brother asks.
“No, that is still the best place for him.” I responded. “From the looks of it this fight might have been hard enough to ensure that if he wasn’t taking things seriously enough before because he was the first humanoid Ascendant in tens of thousands of years he will be now.”
After I finish giving my report my brother and father fill in on what has been going on back in Gryndor. Unsurprisingly Ajax’s return with a dragon has changed perception of House Hearthbound. Whilst a large number of noble Houses still want them restrained they are no longer vocal or openly antagonistic about it and simply making hushed requests of our family. Thankfully Lexi knows what she is doing and Lacel is more than strong enough to keep anyone dumb enough from making a move on the new duchy.
It's not long after my conversation ends that my scouts return with news. An elite enemy force has been spotted. I quickly gave the order to intercept but I still feel a slight tinge of guilt that I suppress. Today will most likely be the day the first person from Gryndor dies in this war, and it will be done following my orders as the elites I lead are getting ready for a fight.
I hope they don’t have a physical champion with them. While the absolute strongest in Gryndor are mostly mages and hybrids the sa cannot be said about our elite forces. It is simply a fact that access to one’s Mana is still too rare for humans and most of our elites are purely physical fighters. This gives our forces access to tactics others cannot use but it also leaves them vulnerable in other ways.
Sitting back and watching the battle as a champion was one of the hardest parts about being a champion in my last war and it hasn’t gotten any easier this ti around. “Go up buddy.” I encourage my bond, while he can’t take part in the fighting directly as he would beco a target, especially with the very real chance I might end up outnumbered he can still support through our bond with an overview of the battlefield.
Fights at the level of elites don’t take too long to build montum, at least not with this many people involved as two armies of two hundred people clash at high speed it barely takes three minutes before one side starts winning handedly. And unfortunately for it isn’t our side.
Once I see the swing happen I don’t hesitate. I made that mistake before and all it does is cost more of my n their lives. It pains to move straight past my n and dive straight into the enemy lines instead of defending them but I know that doing this will force the enemy champion to react almost instantly to stop my rampage and it removes any of the danger from their opening attack on from hitting my n.
As soon as I take the field my second in command is already drawing my n back, he knows what will follow and is already making preparations to disengage and prepare the army in case I start losing and they need to give a chance to escape.
Cutting my way through people fifty to seventy levels below brings no joy but I’ve long since made my peace with it, it even feels a little righteous seeing as they had been killing my own people monts before. But most of my focus is on my surroundings and preparing for their champion to join the fight.
I quickly pick up on the intense Mana swirling around the battlefield. The good part about there being so few champions is that you can quickly identify who it is you are facing. Warwing is a bird beastkin, a mage with a specialty in Air magic. Thankfully he didn’t know it was leading this force or he might have taken flight sooner and been waiting for my bond to take flight beforehand.
Knowing who I was fighting and getting a mont's heads up on their attack certainly wasn’t enough to make up for the opportunity given to them by making the first move. I was surrounded by deadly wind blades in monts. Even with the defensive enchantnts on certain pieces I was wearing and the shielding runes I activated I couldn’t block all of them as I felt a cut opening in my right shoulder and on my calf.
Launching those spells at however gave his location as well and for the next five minutes a ga of cat and mouse ensued as I tried to close the distance and he tried to keep away while we both flung spells at one another.
I would normally have a more favorable match up against Warwing but his opening attack on my leg slowed down enough that it forced us both into a draw as we both carefully defended the other's attacks.
“That dragon was a nasty surprise.” Warwing calls out to .
“So was finding out you had two countries worth of dungeons as well as more you found in the Wild Lands.” I throw back at him, by now both of our forces have had enough ti to back away and all that is left is for the two of us to disengage.
“One dragon won’t be enough to beat us.”He calls out to as he backs away.
As much as I would like to chase after him I know I better, I return to my own troops. Hopefully my attack gave them the chance to drag most of our wounded away and most of our casualties are only wounded and not dead.
