Chapter 344: The Bard Who’s Allergic to Cats
Splash—
Holding a mop, Kaeya slowly pushed the standing water out of the guest room.
Though, considering the room had been completely wrecked, this effort was little more than a drop in the ocean.
Still, to calm the Witch of Purple Rose’s anger, he had no choice but to work diligently.
Noelle, who had just woken up and was still a bit confused, also voluntarily joined the cleanup.
"So... you were planning to get him drunk and extract information from him?"
After hearing Jean recount Kaeya’s plan, Diluc looked utterly exasperated.
"Yes. Considering Kaeya has successfully used this thod to obtain useful intelligence before, we thought..."
Jean looked embarrassed.
After all, the three of them together hadn’t managed to take down the Ausbilder. Instead, he had single-handedly wiped them out.
No matter how you looked at it, it was humiliating.
"Ha... Do you know why I went to Angel’s Share? It was because I was afraid Kaeya would go to the winery and bring out strong liquor!"
Had Diluc’s mories returned?
Not exactly.
But he always had his own interpretation of his actions.
The reason he went to Angel’s Share was to fetch low-alcohol drinks, or rather, juice.
Having dealt with rchants from Snezhnaya before, he knew very well how terrifying their "firewater" could be.
Once, out of courtesy, he drank a full glass poured for him by a Snezhnayan rchant—and ended up unconscious for three whole days.
In other words... soone like the Ausbilder, who lived in that environnt, was never going to be drunk so easily.
Kaeya’s attempt to intoxicate him had been nothing short of self-inflicted humiliation.
And this only deepened Diluc’s understanding of how dangerous the Ausbilder truly was.
He didn’t know why he had lost his mory.
He didn’t know why he had turned into a cat again.
He refused to believe that the Ausbilder causing him to miss last night’s welco party was re coincidence.
Perhaps the man had already anticipated that Diluc would be the only real obstacle at that gathering, after all, among the four of them, he was the one who understood the Ausbilder best.
So he had deliberately turned him into a cat, a form incapable of speaking.
As for Noelle...
That kind-hearted girl had likely witnessed him being attacked and rushed over to help, only to be caught in the crossfire and taken along as well.
Piecing these clues together, Diluc arrived at what he believed to be the truth.
"So, did you get anything useful out of him last night?"
With a quiet sigh, Diluc could only hope that Kaeya had managed to salvage sothing in his absence.
Otherwise, the welco party would have been a complete defeat.
"At the very least, we learned what kind of person he’s looking for. Just like you said before, he only gave a few vague characteristics, but it’s still a direction to investigate."
Kaeya was busy cleaning; it was Jean who answered.
She hadn’t been the only one who morized the traits Bai Luo described.
Jean had committed them to mory as well and planned to arrange for her knights to start searching afterward.
As for whether they would actually find anyone...
That depended on whether the Ausbilder had been deliberately misleading them.
"Mm. I’ll have my people keep an eye out as well. And... leave dealing with the Ausbilder to and Kaeya. The rest of you should avoid getting too close to him."
This incident only reinforced Diluc’s awareness of how dangerous the Ausbilder was.
Even if sothing happened to him or Kaeya, Jean absolutely could not be put at risk.
As the Acting Grand Master, Jean was the heart of Mondstadt.
If anything happened to her... the entire nation might grind to a halt.
That would be catastrophic.
Fortunately, the Ausbilder didn’t seem intent on escalating tensions.
Even when presented with multiple opportunities to strike, he had chosen to ignore them instead.
But there was no way Diluc would allow Jean to take such risks again.
After discussing matters concerning the Ausbilder, Diluc left Lisa’s residence ahead of the others.
He still had many arrangents to make.
Once out of the dormitory area, he ran into a bard reeking of alcohol.
Judging from the direction he had co from, he had likely just left Angel’s Share.
Though he appeared thoroughly drunk, he didn’t evoke any particular disgust.
The sway of his body felt less like drunkenness and more like Mondstadt’s carefree wind itself.
"If you’ve had too much to drink, go get so rest. Don’t wander around outside, Mondstadt hasn’t been very peaceful lately."
As he passed by, Diluc offered the reminder, perhaps out of goodwill.
"Ah... achoo!"
To his surprise, the bard responded with a loud sneeze.
Though it didn’t affect him, the bard looked as though another one was coming. Frowning slightly, Diluc stepped past him and continued toward Angel’s Share.
"Strange..."
Watching Diluc’s departing figure, the bard rubbed his nose in confusion.
With his constitution, it was impossible for him to catch a cold.
If anything could trigger such a reaction... it would only be cats.
After all, he was allergic to cats.
But the one who had just passed by was clearly the fad Master Diluc of the tavern. Why would his cat allergy react to him?
Oh well...
Better to think about how to sneak into the tavern tomorrow.
Maintaining this illusion to make himself appear older wasn’t a long-term solution.
The last ti he ca to Mondstadt, there hadn’t been such a rule barring him from entering taverns.
And waking up late this ti ant that, compared to the local bards who had long since built their reputations, his earnings lagged far behind.
Being carried drunkenly out of a tavern wasn’t the image he wanted.
If he couldn’t walk in upright and instead got tossed out sideways, that was practically an insult.
Hmm...
Perhaps he should sing sothing no one else knew—sothing fresh—to outshine those veteran bards.
What to sing?
How about stories of Barbatos?
Surely, as followers of the Anemo Archon, the people of Mondstadt would be interested in hearing about their god’s adventures.
The wind swirled like feathers, completely enveloping the bard’s body.
Within the glow, his rugged appearance gradually shifted.
A slender, green-clad figure erged from the breeze.
Riding the wind, he drifted toward the plaza before the Cathedral of Favonius.
And as he floated, he began to sing loudly:
"All of Mondstadt’s wonders are not solely the Wind God’s doing—
Now let sing of the beauty of all things.
We should thank the west wind for its long caress,
For spring blossoms bloom so tenderly.
Of course, the credit isn’t entirely theirs—
Without a bard, who would carry these tales?"
. . . . .
