Ah... we're done for, we're so done for!
Watching Mobius's expression remain perfectly, serenely amused, Lumine knew that she and Miko were running out of ti.
Under normal circumstances, once Mobius said what she intended to do, she would simply start doing it — which ant killing the two of them on the spot.
After all, killing her and Miko was the fastest possible way to change the girls in Kaito's life. It was the most efficient thod by a wide margin.
If she couldn't have Kaito's love, then she'd just kill off the girls around him — and maybe then she'd have a chance.
She's definitely thinking exactly that...
Mobius hadn't said it out loud yet, but Lumine was certain she hadn't guessed wrong. Because between what Kaito had told them and what she was seeing with her own eyes right now, Mobius was not, by any stretch, a normal person.
It had to be said — this was genuinely twisted. No sane person thought this way. Then again, Mobius had never been a sane person to begin with.
"Co on, hurry it up, Mobius dear." Despite knowing full well that danger was bearing down on them, Miko's face showed not a single flicker of panic — and her voice matched, perfectly composed.
Of course, that composure was surface only. Beneath it, Miko had already readied herself to fight at a mont's notice.
The instant Mobius made any suspicious move, she would throw herself at her and buy ti for Lumine to run.
No matter how you looked at it, one person dying was better than two. If Lumine could get away, that was what mattered.
"Right? Lumine — dragging things out really isn't a good look, you know." Miko turned her head and shot Lumine a pointed look as she spoke, hoping she'd understand.
"R-right. Yeah."
Following Miko's gaze toward the doorway, Lumine gave a small reply to show she'd caught on.
She understood what Miko ant — and she had no choice but to go along with it. Because neither of them stood a chance against Mobius in a fight. Getting one person out was the only way to go for help.
Though besides Kaito, she had no idea who else to call.
Could Mister Zhongli even beat her?
Feeling thoroughly at a loss, Lumine found her thoughts drifting helplessly to Zhongli.
"Simple — I capture you both, tuck you away sowhere safe, and then take on your appearances."
Lumine: ???
Miko: ???
As Mobius's answer finally ca, Miko and Lumine froze in perfect unison — completely and utterly stunned.
They had already braced themselves for the worst. They had already made peace with the darkest possible outco. And yet Mobius's actual answer still managed to blindside them completely.
This was... beyond comprehension.
Impersonating other girls to win a man's love...
What was even the point of that?
Even Miko, for once, had lost every trace of her earlier composure. She couldn't help it — she genuinely hadn't been able to imagine Mobius arriving at this particular plan.
This was insane.
This was absolutely, utterly insane!
Kaito, honestly, you might as well just take her at this point...
Once the shock began to settle, the thought surfaced in Miko's mind before she could stop it.
Just monts ago she had been thinking about staking her claim. Now, her position had shifted — sowhat.
Because Mobius had gone this far. She'd truly gone this far. At this point, maybe the kindest thing really was to just put the woman out of her misery.
Actually, wait.
How exactly is she planning to impersonate both and Lumine by herself?
The question struck her out of nowhere. Miko decided she needed to ask.
Because whatever else was happening, she couldn't stay silent any longer.
"Take on our appearances? But there's only one of you — how exactly do you plan to beco both of us at once?"
"Oh, that's easy — I just make another ."
With a small smile, Mobius let that sa dark greenish liquid pool at her feet — the sa as before — and from within it, a second Mobius erged.
Two Mobiuses?
Miko stared at the two identical figures standing before her and felt shock seize her all over again.
And while she was still reeling, the second Mobius shifted — rapidly reshaping into a perfect copy of Lumine. The face was flawless in every physical detail, but the expression sitting on it was nothing Lumine would ever naturally wear.
Staring at the scene unfolding before her, Miko had genuinely run out of words.
"My — my face...?" Lumine let out a startled cry.
Mobius had said she was going to do this, of course — but hearing it said and actually watching it happen in front of her were two entirely different things.
"Well? Does it pass?"
Miko heard her own voice coming from sowhere she hadn't expected.
Miko: !
She spun toward the original Mobius — and found that, at so point while she wasn't looking, she had transford into Miko's own likeness. Sa face, sa voice and everything.
"Does this actually an anything to you?"
Looking at the figure wearing her own face, Miko couldn't stop herself from asking the question aloud.
She wasn't angry. She simply didn't understand what any of this was supposed to achieve.
Using another person's face to build a relationship with soone — that led nowhere except to doing all the work on soone else's behalf. Unless Mobius intended to spend the rest of her life living as Miko and Lumine.
But even then, what she would be receiving was love ant for other people. Not love that was hers.
"Of course it does."
The Mobius wearing Miko's face gave a perfectly matter-of-fact nod — but offered nothing further.
"Then tell — what's the point?"
Since Mobius wasn't volunteering it, Miko pressed.
She had a feeling Mobius was dodging the question — not answering because she knew there was no real answer to give.
"Whatever reason you have for being with him — that's my reason too."
There was a brief pause before Mobius replied.
"But what I have is genuinely mine. Yours?" Miko didn't finish the sentence — but she didn't need to. The aning was plain enough without spelling it out.
"It doesn't matter. As long as I feel it's enough."
Sothing had clearly landed — Mobius's expression flickered, briefly, before smoothing back into indifference.
Miko caught every bit of it.
But there was nothing she could do about it, because she couldn't beat Mobius in a fight. And more importantly — she had no desire to provoke her further.
Looking at the situation as it stood, it seed like she and Lumine weren't going to be killed outright — at least not right now. They still had a chance.
Beyond that: Kaito would see through it. He had to. So what she needed to do first was make sure she and Lumine stayed alive long enough for that to happen.
Because if Mobius killed them, everything would be over before it could begin.
"Oh my — has it already started? Kaito should be coming out soon, shouldn't he?" Mobius turned her gaze toward the sea and murmured the words half to herself.
Started? What had started?
And it sounded like Kaito hadn't been caught...
Miko glanced instinctively in the direction Mobius was looking, and froze for a mont at what she'd just heard.
But whatever it ant, one crucial piece of information had just fallen into her hands: Kaito had not been captured by Mobius.
Hm?
Just as Miko was opening her mouth to ask — her thoughts blurred. Her consciousness began to go dark at the edges, and from sowhere behind her ca the heavy thud of sothing falling to the floor. Then she followed it down.
