Chapter 1204: Story 1204: Patient Zero
INT. ABANDONED SUBWAY PLATFORM – EARLY MORNING
A low hum filled the air—pipes groaned, water dripped, and far-off echoes whispered like dying breaths. Jason, Lena, and Dr. Rho had wandered the undercity tunnels for hours. Hunger gnawed at their insides, but what waited above terrified them more.
They approached a sealed tro terminal lit only by flickering backup lights. On the wall: a faded biohazard symbol and a broken keypad.
DR. RHO (inspecting it):
“This was a Virologic Operations Unit. Level 3 containnt. If records are still intact, they’ll be in here.”
JASON (flatly):
“And what are we looking for? A miracle?”
DR. RHO:
“No. We’re looking for him.”
Jason raised an eyebrow. Lena sat down, exhausted.
LENA:
“Who?”
DR. RHO:
“Patient Zero. The first confird infected subject. I believe he was brought here before the outbreak breached containnt.”
A pause.
JASON:
“You think he’s still alive?”
DR. RHO (quietly):
“Alive or dead… his body may still hold answers.”
INT. RESTRICTED D-LAB – LATER
The door creaked open with a screech. Inside: darkness, shattered glass, red flashing from ergency systems. Freezer doors lined the far wall. Cold fog crept across the floor.
As they moved deeper, Jason found sared ID tags.
JASON:
“Facility personnel. All dead. So… not by infection.”
Lena approached a sealed pod in the center of the room. A naplate read: “Subject 0. SC-4”.
LENA (to Dr. Rho):
“Is this it?”
DR. RHO (wide-eyed):
“Yes. Open it.”
Jason hesitated, but Dr. Rho was already at the console. A hydraulic hiss filled the room. The pod cracked open.
Inside: a man, late 30s, skin pale grey, black veins like roots crawling up his chest. But he breathed—slow, rhythmic. His eyes were shut, but twitching beneath the lids.
JASON (tense):
“This guy’s still alive?”
DR. RHO:
“Sedated. Cryo-induced suspension. But the infection… it stabilized in him. No mutation, no rot.”
LENA (whispers):
“Then why did it spread?”
Suddenly, the man’s eyes snapped open—milky white but aware. He spoke.
PATIENT ZERO (raspy):
“They made … to die slowly… but it wouldn’t let .”
He jerked, struggling weakly against the restraints.
PATIENT ZERO (cont’d):
“It talks in dreams. It wants a world without breath.”
Jason raised his weapon. Dr. Rho stepped between them.
DR. RHO:
“No! We need him. He’s resistant—the key to reversing this.”
A sudden tremor shook the lab. Distant howls echoed through the tunnel system.
JASON:
“They found us. We have to move.”
Dr. Rho locked the pod and began prepping it for mobility.
DR. RHO:
“Help carry him. If he dies, we all die next.”
Jason hesitated, then nodded. Together, they wheeled the pod toward the exit as shadows crept under the laboratory doors.
FADE OUT.
[AUDIO LOG #04 — UNRELEASED ARCHIVE]:
“Subject Zero remains anomalously conscious. Neuro-spike patterns mirror spoken language of the infected. Recomnd silence protocols moving forward.”
