Chapter 1205: Story 1205: In the Sewer They Wait
INT. MUNICIPAL SEWER – NIGHT
The stench was unbearable—wet rot, sulfur, sothing deeper. The kind of foulness that crawled down your throat and stayed in your bones.
Jason led the way with a dim flashlight. Behind him, Lena pushed Patient Zero’s mobile cryo-pod, its wheels squeaking with every bump. Dr. Rho kept his eyes on a handheld monitor displaying biotric readings that pulsed erratically.
JASON (muttering):
“Sothing’s off. Water’s moving, but there’s no current.”
DR. RHO (glancing around):
“Air pressure’s changed. Like sothing’s displacing it.”
LENA:
“We’re being hunted.”
A rumble echoed through the tunnels. Not machinery. Not water. Breathing—long, wet breaths—like lungs that had forgotten how to be human.
They turned down a narrower passage, the walls tightening like a throat. The sewer map Dr. Rho carried suggested a lift access point ahead, a way back to surface-level safe zones. But then they saw it—
A wall of bones.
Not just human—rats, dogs, even birds. Stripped clean and arranged, almost ritualistic. Symbols carved into the skulls. Jason moved to investigate—
CRASH!
A blur slamd into him from the shadows. Jason hit the wall hard. The flashlight skittered across the tunnel, casting erratic light.
A figure crawled from the ceiling—thin, twisted, pale. Not a walker. Sothing worse.
LENA (screaming):
“Crawler!”
The creature screeched—a sound that echoed like teeth scraping on wet glass. Two more dropped behind them. Lena fumbled for her knife.
Dr. Rho clutched Patient Zero’s pod and backed into the shadows.
Jason wrestled with the crawler, its jaws snapping inches from his neck. He managed to jam his crowbar through its face—splitting the jaw—and shoved it off.
JASON (breathing hard):
“They’re nesting down here.”
Lena slashed at one that leapt for her, catching its throat mid-air. Black ichor sprayed the tunnel wall.
DR. RHO:
“We need to move. These aren’t lone strays—this is organized. They’re guarding sothing.”
As if summoned, a low moan filled the tunnel. The ground trembled. From the far darkness, dozens of eyes began to glow—red, blue, milky white.
JASON (wide-eyed):
“Holy hell. A brood colony.”
Lena grabbed the flashlight, shining it in all directions. The walls began to shift—they weren’t walls. They were bodies, clinging to the surface, dormant… until now.
PATIENT ZERO (from pod, whispering):
“They wait for the scream. The mother gives it.”
Suddenly, a piercing shriek cut through the tunnels. A sound so high it made their vision blur. All around them, the infected crawlers began to twitch, then move, then charge.
DR. RHO (panicking):
“Run. RUN!”
They fled, pushing the pod, fighting off claws and shrieks. Jason dropped a thermite grenade behind them. The tunnel filled with firelight and smoke.
INT. SECONDARY ACCESS SHAFT – MONTS LATER
They collapsed behind a sealed tal grate. The echoes of screeches faded into the distance.
LENA (gasping):
“They weren’t just waiting… they were listening.”
JASON (grim):
“Then what we heard… wasn’t the last of them.”
Above them, the ladder led into the unknown. Below, the silence returned—but not peace. Never peace.
FADE OUT.
