Chapter 1211: Story 1211: The Silent Mile
EXT. ABANDONED HIGHWAY – DUSK
The road stretched ahead like a scar across the land—fractured, half-swallowed by nature, and eerily quiet. It was once Route 77. Now, survivors called it The Silent Mile.
Lena’s boots crunched broken glass as she led the way, rifle across her shoulder. Behind her, Briggs, Dr. Rho, and the girl—now conscious, silent, and hooded—followed at a cautious pace.
BRIGGS:
“Feels wrong. Too quiet.”
DR. RHO (glancing at a Geiger):
“No noise. No signals. Not even birds. Either we’re lucky… or we’re already surrounded.”
The girl said nothing, but her eyes tracked everything.
FLASHBACK – EARLIER THAT DAY
After escaping Redgate, the group intercepted a broken Harbinger transmission: a supposed safe zone located at the end of this stretch of highway. No one knew if it was real—or a trap.
But with dwindling supplies and no shelter left, they had little choice.
EXT. HIGHWAY SHRINE – LATER
They passed a makeshift morial—dozens of shoes, faded photos, and chalk ssages left by the dead. Children’s drawings flapped in the wind. One of them read:
“We’re waiting for you in the light.”
Suddenly, the girl stopped.
She turned sharply toward the treeline.
LENA:
“What is it?”
THE GIRL (softly):
“They’re watching us. In the soil.”
Before anyone could respond, the road beneath them cracked.
INT. UNDERPASS PIT – CONTINUOUS
Lena hit the ground hard—then rolled. Above her, the road had caved in. She could hear Briggs shouting, Rho coughing.
CLICK. CLICK.
Sothing crawled from the shadows—not a zombie, but sothing worse. It wore Human skin like armor, its limbs crooked and multi-jointed.
LENA (to herself):
“Hybrids…”
She fired—once, twice. The thing shrieked and fled—but not before dozens more began clicking in the distance.
EXT. SILENT MILE – RETURN TO SURFACE
Briggs pulled Lena back up as Rho struggled to hold the girl’s hand. Their path now blocked, the only option was forward.
DR. RHO:
“This road was built over mass graves. The infection seeps upward.”
BRIGGS (angrily):
“You an we’re walking on the backs of the dead?”
THE GIRL:
“They dream in pieces. I can hear them.”
EXT. FINAL STRETCH OF THE SILENT MILE
As dusk faded into night, lights appeared ahead—faint, flickering, surrounded by barricades. A makeshift camp ca into view. Smoke. Cooking fires. Watchtowers.
They had made it.
But sothing wasn’t right.
The guards at the gate didn’t speak. They wore helts. Their faces—hidden. Not Harbingers. Not survivors either.
A loudspeaker crackled:
“State your purpose. Identify the asset.”
LENA:
“We brought her out of Redgate.”
A pause. Then:
“Prepare for containnt.”
Guns aid.
BRIGGS (raising weapon):
“Told you this was a trap.”
Lena stepped forward, calm.
LENA:
“Let them try.”
