Chapter 1705: Story 1705: The Whispering Void
The world held its breath.
The ice shattered, and for one heartbeat, silence reigned. Then ca the sound—a low hum that was not sound at all, but absence, vibrating through the bones of the earth. Elias dropped to one knee, clutching his chest as the firelight inside him flickered. Mara scread as her sword dimd, its golden edge fading to gray.
The frost creature was gone, lted into vapor. Yet from the crater, darkness began to pour—not the soft dark of night, but a thick, living shadow that devoured the light around it. It spread across the ruined field like ink spilled upon a dying world.
Mara’s voice trembled. “Elias… what is that?”
He didn’t answer. He couldn’t. The hum grew stronger, whispering in a thousand voices—so human, so monstrous, all begging, rembering, hungering. It wasn’t just the death of light. It was the mory of everything that had died, speaking all at once.
The air grew heavy. The field bent inward as if gravity itself had turned its back on the living. From within the abyss rose sothing shapeless, a writhing silhouette that shifted like smoke caught in a storm.
“You lit the fire,” it murmured, its tone both soft and infinite. “You birthed the frost. But all fires fade. All cold cracks. Only the void remains.”
Mara staggered backward. “It talks…”
“It rembers,” Elias whispered hoarsely. “It’s what was left when both forces destroyed the world—the space between them.”
The shadow’s tendrils brushed the ground, and where they touched, reality warped. Flowers turned to dust. Stones crumbled into fine sand. Even the corpses of the undead disintegrated into nothingness.
Elias raised his sword, though it felt suddenly weightless—insignificant. The fla that once roared inside him was now only an ember.
“You are echoes,” the void continued, its words coiling around their minds. “Fire burned. Ice froze. You endured. But endurance… is another word for delay.”
Mara fell to her knees, clutching her head. “It’s in my mind, Elias! I can hear it!”
He knelt beside her, gripping her shoulders. “Don’t listen. It feeds on thought. On belief.”
“How do we fight sothing that isn’t there?” she gasped.
Elias looked into the darkness, the sa way one looks into a mirror before breaking it. “By rembering why we are.”
He closed his eyes and reached deep into the fading warmth inside him—the last spark of Firelight serum, now dim, yet stubborn. He pressed his hand to the ground, and faint trails of gold ran through the frost. “You can erase the dead,” he growled, “but not the will that defied death.”
The void recoiled, hissing like the wind through tombs. Its shape faltered for the first ti.
Mara lifted her sword again, her fire rekindling, thin but alive. Together, they stood against the nothingness, golden light bleeding into the black like veins of hope.
The whispering grew furious.
“Hope,” it said, “is the brightest lie.”
The ground split. The horizon vanished. The stars above flickered out one by one.
Elias t Mara’s eyes. “Then we’ll live the lie,” he said.
And as the world collapsed around them, they leapt into the heart of the void—together.
