Chapter 1706: Story 1706: The Heart of Nothing
There was no falling.
No motion.
No ti.
Only darkness that watched back.
When Elias opened his eyes—if eyes still ant anything here—he saw a world without color. Shapes drifted like smoke, shadows of what once was. The ground beneath him pulsed faintly, not solid but alive, as if breathing. Mara was beside him, her form faintly luminous, her firelight flickering weakly in the endless dark.
“Where are we?” she whispered. Her voice echoed a thousand tis, each echo whispering her words back in reverse.
“The void,” Elias murmured. “We fell into its heart.”
But there was no sense of distance, no direction. Above, below—it all bled together into a single black horizon. Ghostly fragnts floated around them: burnt pages, shattered swords, faces half-rembered. The remnants of worlds long dead.
Then the whispers began again.
“You ca willingly,” they said, voices intertwining. “You seek to end what cannot end.”
Mara looked around, trembling. “It’s them—the dead. All of them.”
The darkness pulsed. From its depths, countless silhouettes erged. n, won, children, soldiers—so familiar, so not. Their eyes glowed faint white, hollow and pleading. Elias recognized faces he thought lost forever—his brother among them, skin cracked like broken glass, yet smiling faintly.
“Elias,” the specter said. “You shouldn’t have co.”
He froze. “You… you’re not real.”
“Real enough to rember,” the voice answered, stepping closer. “You carry the fire that burned the world. You think you can redeem it?”
Mara took Elias’s arm. “Don’t listen. It’s trying to bind us.”
But the apparition ignored her. “Every fla leaves a shadow, brother. You lit the first fire. You ended the sun.”
The words struck deeper than any blade. Images crashed into Elias’s mind—soldiers in burning armor, a city swallowed by red skies, and himself standing at the center, holding a vial of glowing light. The first Firelight serum. The beginning of everything.
He fell to his knees. “It was supposed to save us…”
“And it did,” the shade said softly. “It saved us from life.”
The shadows began to move—slowly at first, then faster—circling the two survivors like vultures in a storm. The void itself seed to tremble with hunger.
Mara drew her sword, its light dim but defiant. “We end this,” she said, raising it high.
Elias looked up, fire returning to his eyes. “Not with fire. Not with frost.” He reached for her hand. “With what neither can kill—mory.”
Together, they thrust their weapons into the void. Light and warmth surged, not as fla, but as sothing deeper—a rembrance of life, laughter, humanity.
The darkness scread. Its tendrils dissolved like smoke. Faces vanished one by one, whispering thank you before fading into dust.
And then, silence.
The blackness peeled away like old skin, revealing a faint horizon of gray. For the first ti, Elias saw a distant glow—soft, white, endless.
Mara smiled weakly. “Is that… dawn?”
He took her hand. “No,” he said, voice steady. “It’s what cos before it.”
And as they stepped toward the faint light, the void whispered one last word—low, broken, almost tender.
“Rember.”
