Chapter 1728: Story 1728: The Children of the Ember

Years passed since the First Ember War, yet the scars it left still glowed faintly beneath the earth.

The world had changed—cities lay in ruin, kingdoms were ashes, and the Dreamfire slept within the hearts of only a few. Where once it had united humankind, now it lingered like a forgotten prayer, waiting for those who could still hear its call.

From the silence that followed, new generations rose—wandering clans who told stories of the Fire That Chose None. They feared the Dreamfire as much as they revered it, teaching their children never to touch fla too deeply, lest it awaken what once nearly consud the world.

But in the ruins of Vareth, beneath towers of glass lted into rivers of amber, three children played where gods had once stood.

The eldest, Erian Vale, bore a faint mark of light across his palm—an inheritance he did not understand. His sister, Marra, carried dreams that burned too vividly, her eyes reflecting embers even in darkness.

The youngest, Tovin, spoke to the wind as though it whispered secrets only he could hear.

One evening, as twilight bled into the ruined streets, Erian found a shard half-buried in the dust. It pulsed faintly, the sa rhythm Kael once carried in his heart. When his fingers touched it, warmth spread through his arm—not burning, but awakening.

“Do you feel that?” Marra asked, stepping closer.

“It’s like the stories,” Tovin whispered. “The fire that speaks.”

The shard flickered—and from it, a voice rose, soft as breath but echoing through ti.

“Children of ash… the Hollow sleeps, but not forever.”

The ground trembled. Across the city’s skeleton, lights flared in the cracks of stone and glass. Shapes ford—mories of soldiers, shadows of the Emberborn and Hollowguard, replaying their final battle in silence.

Erian gripped the shard tightly. “What are they?”

“Remnants,” Marra murmured. “Dreams that never died.”

Then the world changed.

From the horizon ca a wave of black mist—the Hollow reborn, drawn by the shard’s awakening. It did not speak this ti. It hungered.

The children ran, but the mist followed, devouring sound, swallowing the light of dusk. In desperation, Erian thrust the shard into the ground. Light burst outward, forming a barrier of fla that held the darkness at bay.

Kael’s voice echoed once more, distant but resolute:

“Every age must find its bearer. Every fla must choose anew.”

The shard lted into Erian’s hand, branding his flesh with the mark of the Dreamfire. The mist recoiled, hissing, then vanished into the horizon.

When the silence returned, the children stood amid glowing ruins, the mark on Erian’s palm pulsing like a heartbeat.

Marra looked to him, fear and wonder mingling in her eyes.

“What happens now?”

He turned toward the distant mountains, where a faint red glow rose from beyond the world’s edge.

“Now,” he said quietly, “the fire learns to walk again.”

Thus began the age of the Children of the Ember—when the Dreamfire once more sought its keepers among the living.
