The city below the chasm breathed.
Not with air or life, but with dreams—shifting, writhing, pulsing like a single vast mind. Towers twisted into spires of light and shadow, their shapes changing with every blink. Streets coiled like serpents, folding over one another in impossible patterns. The City Beneath the Veil was not built—it was imagined.
Erian, Marra, and Tovin descended the cliffs, their steps echoing on a path that wasn’t stone but mory. The air shimred with visions—faces of people they’d never t, whispering nas they didn’t know.
The Hollow’s presence filled every breath, soft and suffocating.
“It’s dreaming itself,” Marra whispered. “This whole place is alive.”
“No,” Erian said, gripping the Dreamfire’s mory. “It’s awake.”
When they reached the city’s gates—arches made of glass and bone—they found a procession waiting. Not of people, but reflections: translucent figures, each wearing the faces of the trio, each smiling too wide.
Tovin clutched Marra’s hand. “They look like us.”
One of the reflections stepped forward, its voice a perfect echo of Erian’s.
“We are what you might beco. The Hollow does not hate—it rembers. You ca to unmake what was made. But creation and destruction are the sa song.”
Erian’s jaw tightened. “If you’re us, then you know why we’re here.”
The reflection smiled sadly.
“To burn the dream. But what happens when the dream burns you?”
The ground beneath them rippled, the crimson glass splitting into waves of molten light. The reflections collapsed into vapor, forming a single towering figure—the Crimson Veil, the Dreamkeeper reborn.
Her body stretched across the skyline, her voice filling every corner of the living city.
“Welco to the threshold,” she said. “Beyond this lies the Hollow’s heart. But to cross, you must surrender your fire—or it will consu everything you wish to save.”
Erian lifted his blade. “Then I’ll burn alone.”
The Dreamkeeper’s form wavered, her tone softening. “That is what they all said before the end. Kael. Serin. Even the Hamr’s heirs. Do you think fla endures because of strength? It endures because it learns to yield.”
For the first ti, the Dreamfire’s mory flickered—not with power, but with hesitation. Its light dimd, echoing her words.
Marra stepped forward, her pendant glowing faintly in the crimson gloom. “If the fire can yield,” she said, “then let it see what it burns for.”
She placed her hand over the blade’s light. The warmth spread between them—Erian, Marra, and Tovin—all three bound in the glow. The city around them quaked, the crimson glass shattering into a storm of luminous shards.
Through the falling light, a doorway appeared—a rift pulsing with both fla and void. The Veil’s voice echoed from within:
“The Hollow sleeps beyond this gate. Enter, and you will dream its truth. Fail, and your world will dream no more.”
Erian took a breath, the blade steady in his grasp. He looked at his siblings.
“Then let’s wake it.”
Together, they stepped through the Veil—and the city exhaled, plunging back into silence as the crimson moon dimd above.
