The stairwell spiraled downward into a suffocating dark that swallowed even the weak ergency lights above. Damon gripped the railing with one hand, holding the girl’s shoulder with the other as they descended step by careful step.

Shadow and Ember led the way, their ears pinned back, muscles taut. Every few steps, they stopped and listened—alert, cautious, uneasy.

Lira’s breaths ca sharp and controlled. “The creature... do you think it can fit into this stairwell?”

“Probably not,” Damon said.

“Probably?” she repeated, eyes wide.

“That door bought us ti,” he said. “That’s all we need.”

But Damon’s voice lacked its usual steadiness. The echoing THUDS from above had finally stopped. The absence of sound was worse.

The silence felt aware.

Listening.

The deeper they went, the colder the air beca. A thin mist curled at the bottom of the staircase as they reached a landing with a half-open steel door, its hinges corroded and warped.

Shadow sniffed the air coming through the doorway.

Then growled.

Not in warning.

In fear.

Damon knelt beside him. “What is it, boy?”

Shadow stepped back from the door.

Lira froze. “Maybe we shouldn’t go in there.”

Behind them, a distant tallic groan echoed from above—the creature shifting sowhere in the ventilation.

Ti was running out.

Damon pushed the steel door open.

A wave of cold air swept out.

The corridor beyond stretched into darkness lit only by the pale glow of fractured bulbs embedded in the walls. The floor was sared with long, faded streaks—drag marks, so so deep they gouged the concrete itself.

Lira shivered. “Damon... those marks. They’re—”

“Too big to be human,” he finished.

The girl tugged at his sleeve. “I hear sothing...”

Damon crouched. “Where?”

She pointed to the walls.

He pressed his ear to the concrete.

At first, nothing.

Then...

faint whispers.

Dozens of them.

Layered. Overlapping. So sobbing. So mumbling. So pleading.

And all of them coming from behind the walls.

Lira backed up instantly. “No. No, no—Damon, this place isn’t just a lab. It’s—”

Before she could finish, a scream tore through the corridor.

Not human.

Not undead.

Sothing trapped.

Sothing alive.

And it ca from the room at the very end of the hall.

Shadow barked sharply, lunging ahead. Ember followed with a low snarl.

“Shadow!” Damon hissed, running after him.

The corridor seed to stretch the closer they got, as if the walls shifted subtly, resisting their pace. The whispers grew louder, rising into a chorus of tornt.

They reached the last door—a reinforced containnt chamber. Its small glass window was fogged from the inside.

Sothing moved behind it.

Damon wiped the glass.

A single eye stared back.

Wide.

Terrified.

Human.

“Help... ...” a cracked voice whispered from within.

Lira covered her mouth. “There’s soone alive in there.”

Damon reached for the release lever—rusted, stiff.

Shadow barked again.

Behind them, the whispers in the walls rose into a frantic frenzy.

Sothing pounded from inside the chamber.

“Please... open it... before they—”

The man’s voice cut off abruptly.

Followed by a new sound—

A wet, dragging shuffle right behind the door.

Lira grabbed Damon’s arm. “Don’t open it.”

The lights flickered violently.

The creature above had gone silent.

Whatever was inside that chamber...

Was no longer begging.

It was waiting.
