The wet, dragging shuffle behind the chamber door continued—slow, deliberate, as if whatever was inside knew exactly where Damon was standing. Damon let go of the release lever imdiately.
Shadow growled.
Ember backed away, fur standing straight.
The girl clutched Lira tightly, whispering, “It sounds... wrong.”
The corridor lights flickered again, casting frantic shadows across the floor. Each flicker revealed a new sar slipping under the chamber door—a dark, viscous trail spreading slowly outward.
“Back up,” Damon whispered.
They moved as one, stepping away from the door. The whispers inside the walls grew louder—more frantic, more desperate—as though reacting to whatever was waking inside the chamber.
Lira’s voice trembled. “Damon... this place is reacting to it.”
He nodded. “Then we’re not waiting to see what it looks like.”
A tallic CLACK echoed down the hall.
Damon spun around—there, half-hidden behind a collapsed locker, was a service hatch embedded in the wall. A faded sign read:
SUB-LEVEL ACCESS — AUTHORIZED STAFF ONLY
Shadow rushed to it, barking sharply.
“That’s our way out,” Damon said.
He grabbed the hatch wheel and twisted.
It didn’t budge.
He tried again.
Still nothing.
The dragging inside the containnt chamber stopped.
Silence.
Complete, unnatural silence.
Lira’s breath hitched. “Damon... hurry.”
He slamd his shoulder against the wheel.
It groaned, resisting for one agonizing second—
—then turned with a loud tallic snap.
The chamber door behind them rattled violently.
“GO!” Damon ordered.
He shoved the hatch open.
A narrow shaft angled downward, filled with cables, dust, and the sll of cold machinery. Shadow and Ember leaped in first, landing silently. Lira helped the girl down. Damon swung inside last.
Behind him—
BANG.
The chamber door buckled inward, denting as though a battering ram had struck it.
He pulled the hatch closed.
The mont it sealed, sothing slamd into the other side.
Hard.
The impact shook the walls of the shaft.
Then ca the sound that froze all of them—
A voice.
Deep. Broken. Wrong.
“D...a...m...o...n...”
The girl whimpered. Lira gasped.
Damon’s blood ran cold.
“That’s not human,” he whispered.
The thing outside dragged its voice like it was learning to speak—stretching each sound, tasting it. The air vibrated as it pressed sothing heavy against the hatch.
“O...p...e...n...”
Shadow growled, teeth bared, trembling with fear.
Ember nudged Damon’s leg, urging him downward.
Damon forced himself to breathe. “We go. Now.”
They crawled deeper into the maintenance shaft. The tal creaked under their weight, dust falling like ash from above. A faint hum vibrated through the cables running alongside them—as if sothing deeper within the facility was still alive and aware.
Lira whispered, “How did it know your na?”
“I don’t know,” Damon said. “And I don’t want to find out.”
A distant echo traveled through the shaft—heavy footsteps pacing the corridor above them, slow and rhythmic, following their direction.
The creature wasn’t giving up.
It was tracking them.
The shaft opened into a lower platform—lit by a single hanging lamp. Below the grated floor, a massive ventilation system rumbled like the heartbeat of a buried giant.
Damon landed first and caught Lira’s hand as she descended.
The girl pointed to a sign on the wall:
SUB-LEVEL B3
PRIMARY EXPERINTATION AND HOLDING
Lira swallowed hard. “We just went deeper.”
Damon looked into the expanding darkness ahead.
“It’s the only way forward.”
Behind them, the footsteps stopped.
Silence returned.
A silence that only ant one thing—
The creature had found another way down.
