Silence spread outward from the ritual chamber like a tide moving in reverse.

It was not peace.

It was absence.

The man felt it first—a pressure behind the eyes, as if the world had shifted slightly to the left and forgotten to take him with it. His breath sounded distant in his own ears. The woman flexed her fingers, watching blood drip onto the salt and vanish before it touched stone.

“Do you feel that?” she whispered.

“Yes,” he said. “Like we’ve been misplaced.”

Corven tightened the ropes around their wrists, knots old and deliberate. “Don’t speak loudly. Sound still belongs to them.”

Outside, the horde stirred.

But it did not advance.

From the ledge, the dead shuffled, turned, and hesitated. The drowned stared blankly at the cliff. The inland dead wandered in confused arcs. Even the walking ship froze mid-motion, its figurehead tilting as if listening for a voice that refused to answer.

The horn did not sound.

“They can’t see us,” the woman said.

Corven shook his head. “They can’t find you. There’s a difference.”

A zombie wandered into the cliff face where the passage entrance should have been. Its hands scraped stone, confused, angry. It scread—not in hunger, but in frustration.

Then it moved on.

The woman exhaled slowly. “How long does it last?”

Corven didn’t answer imdiately.

“That depends,” he said finally, “on how loudly you exist.”

The dead began to drift away from the cliff, drawn back toward the shore, toward the burning wreckage and the calling sea. The walking ship groaned, then turned with agonizing slowness, wading back into the surf as if recalled by a deeper master.

The army dissolved—not defeated, rely redirected.

The coast exhaled.

Inside the chamber, the silence thinned. Sound returned in fragnts—the drip of water, the crackle of distant fire, the rasp of breath.

The man loosened his grip on his blade. “So we hide now?”

Corven t his gaze. “No. You move while the world isn’t looking.”

He showed them a map etched into stone—ancient trade routes, forgotten harbors, places where history folded over itself. “These paths exist between attention. The dead don’t patrol them yet.”

“Yet,” the woman repeated.

“They’re learning faster now,” Corven said. “Whatever commands them is testing mory, coordination, patience.”

The man glanced toward the passage entrance. “And the oath?”

Corven’s eyes darkened. “It binds you to places like this. Old places. You’ll feel them calling when the dead gather too tightly.”

A price already being collected.

Before dawn—if dawn still ant anything—they left the cliff by a hidden descent known only to smugglers and ghosts. The sea was quieter now, deceptively calm. Ash drifted like snow.

As they walked, the woman noticed sothing wrong.

Zombies stood nearby.

Close enough to touch.

One leaned against a rock as they passed, its empty eyes sliding over them without recognition. Another crawled from the surf and paused inches from the man’s boot, sniffing the air like a confused animal.

“They’re right there,” she murmured.

“Yes,” the man said. “And they’re pretending we aren’t.”

Behind them, high on the cliff, Corven watched until they vanished into the fog. He pressed his palm against the carved nas and whispered an old warning.

“Those who walk unseen are never truly gone.”

Far out at sea, the horn sounded once.

Not confused.

Curious.

Sothing had noticed the silence.

And it was beginning to search around it.
