They didn't descend into the basin.

Not yet.

High ground ant perspective.

And perspective ant survival.

Kael guided them along the ridge line, circling wide above the circular formation. From this elevation, the geotry beca clearer.

The zombies weren't just standing.

They were arranged in layers.

Outer ring — loosely spaced.

Middle ring — denser.

Inner ring — nearly shoulder to shoulder.

All facing inward.

All motionless.

Lyra lay prone beside a fractured slab of concrete, scanning through a cracked optic lens. "They're not idle," she whispered. "Micro-movents. Subtle corrections."

Eron frowned. "Like balancing."

Mara closed her eyes briefly.

"Like buffering."

At the basin's center, the angular structure continued its quiet reconfiguration. Facets slid and sealed. Thin seams opened and closed without sound. Its surface reflected dawn in sharp planes of pale light.

It didn't look infected.

It looked engineered.

A faint vibration traveled through the ridge again.

Stronger than before.

Not random.

Tid.

Lyra stiffened. "There. Did you feel that interval?"

Kael had.

Three pulses.

Pause.

Three pulses.

Pause.

The zombies reacted—not with steps—but with posture shifts.

Heads tilted by degrees.

Spines straightened.

Arms adjusted to identical resting angles.

Synchronization without locomotion.

Periter logic.

"It's calibrating them," Eron muttered.

"No," Mara corrected softly. "It's syncing them."

The difference mattered.

Calibration implied correction.

Synchronization implied unity.

Kael studied the outermost ring carefully.

Every few minutes, one zombie from the outer layer would step forward.

Slow.

Precise.

Replacing a unit in the middle layer.

The displaced one would step outward.

Rotating positions.

Not random.

Cyclical.

"They're rotating load," Lyra breathed.

Like processors sharing strain.

Like sentries exchanging watch.

The system wasn't static.

It was optimizing.

Suddenly, one zombie in the far western arc jerked.

A single irregular twitch.

Its head snapped slightly off-angle.

A deviation.

Instantly, two units beside it shifted.

Not attacking.

Correcting.

They pressed in subtly, forcing its posture back into alignnt.

The twitching stopped.

Order restored.

Eron swallowed. "It corrects instability."

Mara's voice was tight. "It corrects individuality."

Another tremor.

This ti the structure at the center emitted a thin, almost inaudible tone—higher than before.

The zombies did not move.

But sothing else did.

From beneath the basin floor, faint lines began glowing through cracks in the earth.

Circular conduits.

Radial pathways.

Connecting outer ring to center.

Energy transfer.

Lyra's breath slowed. "It's not just calling them."

"No," Kael murmured.

"It's using them."

The entire formation functioned like a living circuit.

Each body a node.

Each ring a layer of insulation and processing.

The structure wasn't surrounded.

It was extended.

Distributed.

Protected by the very intelligence it projected outward.

And they were four humans on a ridge staring at an operating network.

Eron looked at Kael. "We can't breach that."

Not head-on.

Not by force.

Mara's gaze sharpened. "But every system that optimizes has thresholds."

Lyra nodded slowly. "Overload."

Kael's eyes remained on the rotating outer ring.

On the correction protocols.

On the pulse intervals.

Observe.

Map.

Disrupt.

But now the equation was clearer.

You don't attack the heart.

You destabilize the periter until the heart compensates.

And when it compensates—

It exposes strain.

Another pulse rolled outward.

Stronger.

The ridge vibrated beneath them.

Far below, the zombies adjusted in flawless unison.

Perfect order.

Perfect control.

But perfection requires maintenance.

And maintenance creates vulnerability.

Kael exhaled slowly.

The system was magnificent.

Terrifying.

Efficient.

But it was still a system.

And systems—

When pushed beyond tolerance—

Don't scream.
