They waited until dusk.

Patterns reveal themselves in repetition.

And repetition requires ti.

From the ridge, Kael tracked the pulse intervals. Three beats. Pause. Three beats. Longer pause. Then a low-frequency tremor beneath it all — constant, like a buried engine.

Lyra mapped rotation timing in the outer ring. Every seven minutes, a shift. Every fourth rotation, a micro-delay — barely visible, but present.

Eron counted posture corrections. Deviations were resolved in under two seconds.

Fast.

Efficient.

Predictable.

Mara watched the conduits beneath the basin floor. Each pulse brightened the radial lines faintly, energy traveling from outer ring to center in synchronized surges.

"They're feeding it," she whispered.

No.

They were stabilizing it.

Kael crouched and began sketching in ash.

Pulse.

Rotation.

Correction window.

Compensation delay.

He drew a small X on the outermost arc.

"There," Lyra said quietly. She saw it too.

The western quadrant.

The sa sector where the earlier twitch had occurred.

Slightly slower correction response.

Minuscule.

But asurable.

Every system has latency.

Night deepened.

The basin glowed faintly now, thin lines of energy tracing geotric symtry through the earth. The central structure's facets shifted more frequently after each synchronized surge.

It was adapting.

So would they.

Eron unpacked three sonic charges — scavenged tech, unstable but functional. Not explosives.

Disruptors.

Short-range resonance emitters designed to scramble sensor arrays.

Mara adjusted their frequency bands carefully. "We don't overpower the signal," she said. "We interfere with it."

Noise.

Not attack.

Lyra volunteered without hesitation. "I'll plant them."

Kael t her eyes.

Timing mattered.

If the pulse cycle peaked during placent, the system would register anomaly instantly.

They waited for the longer pause.

Three beats.

Pause.

Three beats.

Longer pause—

Move.

Lyra descended the ridge silently, circling wide through debris shadows. The outer ring did not react. Their attention remained inward.

She reached the western quadrant and placed the first emitter beneath fractured asphalt, angling it toward two adjacent nodes.

Back.

Second emitter — twenty ters north along the arc.

Back.

The third—

A tremor passed unexpectedly.

Pulse shift.

Shortened pause.

Lyra froze.

The zombies nearest her adjusted posture.

Micro-tilt.

Correction sweep scanning outward.

Kael's pulse hamred.

Not yet.

Not yet—

The sweep passed.

Alignnt restored.

Lyra placed the final emitter and retreated up the ridge.

Breathing controlled.

Eyes steady.

Mara activated the array remotely.

The first distortion wave rolled outward — subtle, almost imperceptible.

The outer ring hesitated.

Just a fraction of a second.

Second wave.

Two zombies in the western arc twitched simultaneously.

Correction units moved—

But their timing staggered.

Pulse from the center intensified.

Energy lines brightened.

The structure's facets reconfigured rapidly now.

Compensation mode.

Third distortion wave.

This ti the rotation cycle misaligned.

One unit stepped forward too early.

Collision.

Not violent.

But wrong.

For the first ti since arrival, spacing broke symtry.

A ripple traveled through the ring.

Correction protocols overloaded the western quadrant.

And the heart responded.

The central structure emitted a deeper tone.

Lower.

Strained.

Energy surged harder through the conduits.

Lyra whispered, "It's compensating."

Mara's voice was tight. "Push one more cycle."

Kael watched carefully.

They weren't trying to destroy the periter.

They were asuring tolerance.

Fourth wave.

The western arc staggered.

Not collapse—

But visible instability.

The structure's panels snapped into new configurations.

Adaptive shielding.

Resource redistribution.

It was learning.

And in learning—

It exposed itself.

Kael saw it then.

During peak compensation, the northern inner ring dimd.

Energy diverted.

A montary drain.

A weakness.

Small.

Precise.

Repeatable.

He marked it in ash.

They hadn't broken the system.

Not yet.

But they had forced it to reveal strain.

And strain ant limits.

Eron exhaled slowly. "We can't outfight it."

Kael nodded once.

No.

But they could outthink it.

Because distortion is not destruction.

It is leverage.

And now—
