The stillness lasted exactly four seconds.

Then the pulse returned.

Different.

Not rhythmic.

Scanning.

A low-frequency sweep rolled outward from the central structure, brushing across the basin like invisible radar.

Every zombie in the outer ring stepped forward in unison.

One pace.

Stop.

The sweep continued.

Lyra’s grip tightened on her blades. “It’s triangulating.”

Kael didn’t move.

Running now would confirm location.

Noise had revealed them.

Motion would refine it.

The sweep reached the western quadrant first—where distortion still flickered in uneven waves.

The structure’s facets shifted toward that sector.

Energy surged.

The western ring tightened formation, compressing gaps created by earlier collisions.

Correction units no longer moved in pairs.

They moved in fours.

Redundancy.

Eron muttered, “It doubled correction bandwidth.”

Mara’s eyes widened. “It’s isolating interference.”

The northern spike emitter suddenly shorted.

A sharp crack echoed from the ridge below as its casing split under feedback.

The system had identified the frequency.

Countered it.

Western distortion followed seconds later—emitters overheating, then dying in sequence.

Silence reclaid the basin.

The zombies in the outer ring turned their heads increntally.

Left.

Right.

Left.

Not scanning randomly.

Mapping.

Kael felt the calculation unfold.

The system had registered disturbance vectors.

asured compensation drain.

Traced imbalance to a source beyond the periter.

To them.

Another pulse surged—higher amplitude.

The basin floor glowed brighter than before.

But this ti, energy did not flow inward.

It flowed outward.

From the center to the rings.

Empowernt instead of collection.

The inner ring straightened.

Middle ring compressed.

Outer ring widened slightly—

Creating corridors.

Lyra’s breath hitched. “That’s not defensive spacing.”

No.

It was deploynt geotry.

A segnt of the outer ring—western arc—broke formation.

Twelve units stepped away from the basin in perfect alignnt.

Not charging.

Advancing.

asured.

Toward the ridge.

Toward the source.

“It’s sending a probe,” Eron whispered.

Kael’s jaw tightened.

The system would not commit the whole formation.

Not yet.

It would test response capacity first.

Engage the anomaly.

Collect live data.

The twelve moved in wedge formation, spacing immaculate.

No staggering.

No hesitation.

The corridor behind them sealed as remaining units shifted to maintain symtry.

The heart remained protected.

Mara spoke softly. “It learned from the ring. It learned from the recalibration. It’s integrating every engagent.”

Each battle had been data.

Each distortion a lesson.

The probe units reached the base of the ridge and stopped.

Not attacking blindly.

Waiting.

Listening.

The central structure emitted a narrow pulse—focused now.

Directional.

A thin beam of resonance that cut across the ridge line.

Kael felt the vibration in his chest.

Target lock.

Lyra whispered, “If we engage them, it records everything.”

“Yes,” Mara said. “But if we don’t, it escalates.”

Kael’s mind moved quickly.

This wasn’t about defeating twelve units.

It was about controlling the narrative the system received.

If it learned they were unpredictable—

It would overcommit.

If it learned they were weak—

It would swarm.

Adaptive systems evolve through feedback.

So you don’t just fight.

You curate the data.

Kael stepped forward deliberately, into view.

Not charging.

Not hiding.

The twelve units snapped their heads toward him instantly.

Perfect lock.

The heart pulsed once.

Recording.

Kael raised one hand slowly.

Provocation.

asured.

And then—

He smiled.

Because the next move wouldn’t be noise.

It would be misdirection.

And sotis—

The fastest way to break a system—
