Kael stepped fully into the open.

The ridge wind tugged at his coat.

Below, the twelve probe units adjusted formation instantly, tightening their wedge as the central structure emitted a faint confirming pulse.

Recording.

Analyzing.

Predicting.

Kael drew one blade slowly.

Not both.

Not full readiness.

asured threat level.

Lyra understood imdiately.

He was shaping the data.

The probe advanced.

Not sprinting.

Studying.

Each step synchronized to the pulse from the basin.

Kael moved first.

A forward charge—direct, linear, aggressive.

Exactly what the system would anticipate from a cornered anomaly.

The twelve reacted flawlessly.

Two split left.

Two split right.

Eight maintained center wedge.

Encirclent pattern.

Efficient.

Predictable.

Kael struck the lead unit with clean precision—severing it at the neck joint.

The body dropped.

Imdiate adaptation.

Rear units closed the gap in less than a second.

No hesitation.

No pause to reclaim the fallen.

Data prioritized over recovery.

Good.

Kael allowed the next exchange to appear desperate.

Heavy swings.

Visible strain.

He intentionally overextended once—

A blade dragged half a second too long.

A calculated error.

A probe unit lunged.

Claws tore across his shoulder armor, ripping fabric.

Not deep.

But visible.

Lyra flinched behind the ridge line.

The basin pulsed brighter.

Escalation registered.

The system interpreted the exchange:

Hostile entity.

Moderate combat capacity.

Close-range preference.

Susceptible to flanking.

Kael disengaged abruptly.

Retreated three steps.

Slipped on loose shale—

Another deliberate imperfection.

One probe unit nearly reached his throat before he twisted free.

Mara whispered from cover, “It’s increasing confidence.”

Exactly.

Confidence breeds overcommitnt.

Kael eliminated two more units—efficient but ssy.

Letting his breathing appear heavier.

Slower recovery between strikes.

The probe adjusted again—

Now pressing faster.

Aggressive follow-through.

The heart at the basin pulsed in shorter intervals.

Excitent.

Prediction model strengthening.

Kael pivoted toward the ridge, feigning full retreat.

The remaining nine units surged forward as one.

Hook set.

They climbed halfway up the ridge—

Farther from optimal signal strength.

Farther from formation reinforcent.

Lyra’s hand tightened around the remote trigger hidden beneath debris.

Wait.

Wait—

The central structure emitted a corrective pulse—

Slight delay.

Signal attenuation.

Just enough.

Kael stumbled again—dropping one blade intentionally.

Clear vulnerability.

The probe accelerated for the kill.

That was the mont.

Lyra triggered the buried charge beneath the slope.

Not explosive—

Destabilizing.

The shale beneath the climbing units fractured, collapsing downward in a controlled slide.

Five units lost footing instantly, tumbling into each other.

Signal disruption spiked as debris interfered with alignnt.

The wedge broke.

The remaining four hesitated—

A hesitation they had never exhibited before.

Kael surged forward.

No more feigned weakness.

Precision returned.

Two decapitated in clean arcs.

One severed at the spine.

The last attempted retreat—

But the basin pulse lagged half a second.

Latency.

Too far from reinforcent.

Kael ended it.

Silence reclaid the ridge.

Below, the basin formation trembled subtly.

The outer ring shifted.

Recalculation underway.

Mara’s voice was low. “It believes it nearly succeeded.”

Eron nodded. “It thinks we’re strong—but flawed.”

Kael retrieved his dropped blade.

Blood darkened his torn shoulder.

He let it remain visible.

Let the system record damage.

Let it assu progression.

Because now the network carried new data:

Target vulnerable under sustained pressure.

Engagent success probability rising.

Next probe would be larger.

More aggressive.

More confident.

And that—

Was the trap.

Kael looked toward the basin where the central structure pulsed steadily once more.

The system believed it was adapting correctly.

It believed escalation would secure victory.

But the most dangerous flaw in any intelligence—

Is believing the pattern is understood.

And now—
