When they reached the bottom of the staircase, the humming reached its crescendo, cutting off abruptly as they stepped into a massive chamber. The air was stifling, filled with the tallic tang of oil and sothing else—sothing decayed.
The room was circular, its walls lined with pods, each containing grotesque figures suspended in a viscous, greenish fluid. So were incomplete, their bodies riddled with wires and chanical augntations. Others looked eerily human, their eyes closed as if in a dreamless slumber.
"What the hell is this place?" Callum muttered, his voice tinged with horror.
Zara stepped closer to one of the pods, her expression unreadable. "It’s a production line. They’re building them here."
"Building what?" Andre asked.
Zara turned to face the team, her jaw tight. "Weapons. Biological, cybernetic… maybe even sentient. Whatever these things are, they’re engineered for war."
As she spoke, a hiss echoed through the room. One of the pods began to open, releasing a cloud of vapor. The figure inside stirred, its glowing eyes snapping open.
"Get ready!" Zara barked, drawing her blades.
The creature stepped out of the pod, its movents unnervingly smooth. It was humanoid but lacked any distinguishing features beyond its piercing, glowing eyes and the intricate glyphs etched into its tallic skin.
"Do not resist," it said in a chanical, layered voice. "You have entered restricted territory. Surrender and be processed."
"Not a chance," Zara said, shifting into a defensive stance.
The creature tilted its head, as if analyzing her. "You bear the mark of the first experint. You are… incomplete."
Zara froze. "What did you just say?"
Before the creature could respond, more pods began to hiss open. Figures erged one by one, their movents synchronized.
"We need to get out of here. Now," Callum said, his voice tense.
"Not yet," Zara replied, her gaze locked on the first creature. "It knows sothing. And I’m going to find out what."
The room erupted into chaos as the creatures advanced, and Zara prepared to fight for answers—and survival.
