The chamber was a battlefield, the air alive with the clash of blades and the echoing hum of energy weapons. Zara moved with precision, her twin blades cutting through the air as she parried an attack from one of the cybernetic creatures. The others had already engaged the erging threats, their weapons blazing in the dim, green-tinted light.
"Hold the line!" Zara shouted over the din, her voice firm despite the chaos.
Andre fired his rifle in controlled bursts, sparks flying as bullets ricocheted off the creatures’ tallic skin. "They’re adapting! Regular rounds aren’t doing much!"
"Aim for the joints or the glyphs!" Zara called back, her keen eyes studying the movents of the creature in front of her. It fought with calculated precision, every strike aid to disarm, not kill.
One of the creatures lunged at Mia, its clawed hand outstretched. She ducked and countered, her blade slicing through its arm at the elbow. The creature staggered but didn’t fall, its severed limb sparking as it continued to advance.
"These things don’t quit!" Mia growled, retreating to regroup.
Zara saw her opening. As the creature in front of her overextended, she drove one blade into the glowing glyph on its chest. It convulsed violently, emitting a shrill, chanical scream before collapsing into a heap of wires and tal.
"That’s their weak point!" Zara yelled. "Focus on the glyphs!"
As the team adjusted their tactics, the tide of the battle began to shift. One by one, the creatures fell, their glowing glyphs flickering out like dying embers.
The room grew quiet, save for the heavy breathing of Zara’s team. But the montary reprieve was short-lived. The central console at the far end of the chamber ca to life, its screens flickering with lines of alien code.
"Zara…" Callum said, his voice uneasy. "We’ve got company."
From the shadows, a towering figure erged. Unlike the others, it was fully ford—its body sleek and seamless, the glyphs etched into its surface glowing with an intense, pulsing light. Its eyes burned a piercing blue, and it moved with an almost predatory grace.
"You are persistent," it said, its voice deep and resonant. "But futile."
Zara stepped forward, her grip tightening on her blades. "Who are you? What do you want?"
"I am the Sentinel," it replied. "Guardian of this facility. And you, Zara Kincaid… you are the anomaly. The first experint that was not perfected."
Zara’s blood ran cold. "What are you talking about?"
The Sentinel tilted its head. "You were chosen, but you rejected the gift. Now, you threaten the balance. You must be neutralized."
Before Zara could respond, the Sentinel raised its hand, and the chamber trembled. The glyphs on the walls flared to life, casting the room in a blinding light.
"Fall back!" Zara ordered, but it was too late. The ground beneath them gave way, and they plunged into darkness.
