The stone door behind them sealed with a loud thud, cutting off any hope of retreat. The team stood in the center of the foreboding cell, lit dimly by flickering candles affixed to the cold, damp walls. The silence was thick, save for the occasional rattle of the rusty shackles lying abandoned on the floor.
"This room isn't just a prison," Ghost said, scanning the walls with his night-vision goggles. "It's a psychological trap. Sothing about it feels... wrong."
Viper crouched near the shackles, her hand hovering over them. "These chains have seen centuries of tornt. There's an aura—sothing ancient and vile." She withdrew her hand quickly, sensing a dark energy pulsing faintly.
Rook stepped forward, the tactical light on his rifle illuminating faint carvings on the walls. "Shadow, what do you make of this?"
Shadow joined him, running her fingers lightly over the runes. "It's a warning, but also... a story," she said, her voice hushed. "This cell was used to confine a being who fed on fear and despair. The carvings speak of prisoners who went mad, their emotions fueling the entity trapped here."
"Great," Bulwark muttered, kicking at a loose stone. "We're in a haunted cell with no way out and no backup."
The room suddenly grew colder, and the faint sound of chains dragging echoed through the chamber. The team instinctively raised their weapons, forming a defensive circle.
"Did you hear that?" Viper whispered, her eyes darting toward the dark corners of the room.
"I heard it," Ghost replied, his voice steady. "We're not alone."
From the shadows, a spectral figure began to erge—a gaunt, hollow-eyed apparition bound in shimring chains that seed to flicker between reality and illusion. Its face was a grotesque mixture of sorrow and malice.
"You shouldn't be here," it hissed, its voice reverberating off the stone walls. "This place... it belongs to ."
Rook stepped forward, his weapon trained on the entity. "Who are you? And what is this place?"
The apparition tilted its head, its chains clinking with the movent. "I was once a guardian of the Labyrinth. Betrayed. Cast into this cell to rot for eternity. Now, I am the keeper of despair. Your pain will feed ."
"We don't have ti for this," Bulwark growled, stepping forward with his grenade launcher.
"Wait!" Shadow shouted, stopping him. "If this thing was a guardian, it might know the way out—or how to defeat the curse."
The apparition laughed, a hollow, chilling sound. "You seek escape? You seek answers? Then you must endure what I endured. The chains will judge you."
Before anyone could react, the shackles sprang to life, snapping around Rook's wrists and ankles. He let out a grunt as the chains dragged him toward the center of the room.
"Rook!" Viper shouted, rushing to his side, but an invisible force threw her back.
The entity lood over Rook, its hollow eyes glowing brighter. "If you survive the trial, you may leave. If not... your souls will stay here forever."
The room plunged into darkness as the sound of rattling chains filled the air, signaling the beginning of the trial.
