As the stone door sealed behind them, the team found themselves in an even darker, narrower passage. The air was colder here, and the faint sound of whispers seed to emanate from the walls themselves. Their flashlights barely penetrated the oppressive darkness, the beams of light swallowed by the shadows.
"This place feels alive," Shadow muttered, her hand gripping her rifle tightly.
"Stay close," Rook ordered. "No one gets separated."
The corridor opened into a vast underground chamber. The walls were adorned with more intricate patterns of bones, but this ti, the designs ford spiraling glyphs that seed to pulsate faintly in the torchlight. At the far end of the room stood an altar, atop which rested a small black chest bound in chains.
"That has to be it," Viper whispered, her eyes fixed on the chest.
Ghost scanned the room carefully. "It’s too exposed. This screams trap."
Bulwark took a step forward, his heavy boots echoing in the eerie silence. "We’ve handled worse. Let’s grab it and get out of here."
As soon as his foot touched the chamber’s floor, the whispers grew louder, transforming into anguished cries that reverberated through the room. The glyphs on the walls began to glow a sickly green, and a heavy, unnatural wind swept through the chamber.
"I knew it!" Ghost hissed, raising his weapon.
From the shadows erged skeletal figures cloaked in tattered robes. Their empty eye sockets glowed with an ominous light, and each carried a rusted weapon—a sword, an axe, or a staff. Unlike the cloaked guardians from before, these beings moved with aggressive intent, their bones rattling as they approached.
"Defensive positions!" Rook barked, his voice cutting through the chaos.
Bulwark fired first, his heavy weapon roaring as he mowed down several of the skeletal attackers. The creatures shattered into fragnts but imdiately began to reassemble, their bones snapping back into place with unnatural speed.
"They’re regenerating!" Shadow shouted from her elevated position. She fired precise shots, aiming for the glowing cores in their chests. The mont her bullet struck, the skeletons crumbled into lifeless heaps.
"Hit the cores!" Rook commanded, taking out two enemies with his assault rifle.
Ghost moved swiftly toward the altar, ducking and weaving through the chaos. "Cover !" he called out as he reached the chest. His nimble fingers worked quickly, cutting through the chains with a small plasma torch.
The mont the chains fell away, the cries intensified, and the chamber began to tremble. Ghost grabbed the chest, but as he did, a massive skeletal figure erged from the wall behind the altar. Standing nearly ten feet tall, it wielded a colossal sword that seed to hum with dark energy.
"Big guy incoming!" Viper shouted, charging forward to engage.
"Fall back to the passage!" Rook ordered, covering the retreat with a barrage of gunfire.
