The echoing moans filled the narrow alley as Captain Marcus Kane led the team cautiously forward. The sunlight barely touched the ground here, blocked by leaning, crumbling buildings that seed to close in around them. The sll of decay was overwhelming, and the air was thick with the oppressive sound of shuffling feet.
Detective Lila "Huntress" Navarro perched on a ledge, scanning the horde ahead with her binoculars. She dropped down silently to the rest of the team. "We've got a problem. Hundreds, maybe more. They're packed so tight you can't see the ground."
"Hundreds?" Officer Derek "Shield" Coleman repeated, gripping his riot shield tighter. "We can't go through that."
"We don't have a choice," Kane said firmly. He pulled out the city map, now sared with blood and dirt. "This is the only way to the supply cache. If we backtrack, we lose precious ti."
Sergeant Jenna "Blaze" Hart adjusted the fuel tank on her flathrower. "We'll clear a path. I can burn through at least half of them if—"
"No," Kane cut her off. "We're in a confined space. The fire could trap us. We need another strategy."
Ethan "Brain" O'Connor's voice crackled through the comms. "Guys, you're not going to like this, but I've picked up a heat signature at the center of the swarm. It's big. Bigger than anything we've seen before."
"What do you an by 'big'?" Riley "Quick Shot" Bennett asked, peering into the scope of her sniper rifle.
Brain hesitated. "Whatever it is, it's controlling the swarm. The way they're clustering, it's not random. Sothing's guiding them."
"Great," Quick Shot muttered. "A zombie general. Just what we needed."
Kane straightened. "Alright, here's the plan. Huntress, find us a way around or a vantage point. Quick Shot, cover us from above. Blaze, Shield, and I will move through the alley slowly. Brain, keep us updated on that heat signature."
The team moved as one, their movents precise and practiced. The moans grew louder, and soon, the first shambling forms erged from the shadows.
"Contact," Kane whispered. He raised his shotgun, firing a single, precise blast that dropped the nearest zombie.
Shield moved ahead, his reinforced riot shield deflecting clawing hands and snapping jaws. Blaze followed closely, her flathrower ready to ignite anything that got too close.
As the team pushed forward, the swarm thickened. Huntress's voice crackled through the comms. "There's a fire escape to your left. It leads to a rooftop that overlooks the horde."
"Quick Shot, take the high ground," Kane ordered.
Riley climbed swiftly, her sniper rifle slung across her back. From above, the scale of the swarm was staggering. Hundreds of zombies pressed into the alley, their dead eyes fixed on the team.
And then, it appeared. A towering figure, its bloated, decaying body pulsating with sickly green veins, pushed its way through the crowd. Its roar silenced the horde for a brief mont before they surged forward with renewed frenzy.
"Brain," Kane barked, "what the hell is that thing?"
Brain's voice ca back, shaken. "I—I don't know, but whatever it is, it's not just controlling them. It's enhancing them."
Kane's jaw tightened. "Then we kill it. All units, focus fire!"
The battle had begun.
