The subway station trembled as the Veinborn horrors slithered toward the survivors, their elongated jaws chittering, drool sizzling on the floor.
But the true horror stood ahead—General Victor Hale.
His cybernetic armor glowed in the dim light, a crimson insignia of the Flesh Cult burning on his shoulder plate.
He lifted his rifle, an experintal plasma weapon, and aid it at the group.
“You ran right into my hunting grounds,” Hale said, his voice a low growl.
“And I never let prey escape.”
Before anyone could react, the Veinborn lunged.
The Swarm Awakens
Reaper was the first to strike, hacking his machete through a Veinborn’s chest cavity.
Instead of falling, its body convulsed, and its ribs cracked open like an insect’s shell, revealing a second gnashing maw.
It shrieked.
Lucas, still struggling against the infection trying to consu him, fired his shotgun.
The blast shredded the creature’s head—but it kept moving, twitching violently before the black veins stitched it back together.
“THEY WON’T DIE!” Mia shouted, blasting another in the torso.
Hale simply chuckled.
“You’re fighting the next evolution.”
From the darkness, sothing monstrous erged.
A Devourer spawn.
Fifteen feet tall, its body a writhing mass of sinewy muscle and shifting tendrils.
Its face split open, revealing rows of needle-like teeth and a whipping, barbed tongue.
The Maw had arrived.
It moved impossibly fast, its clawed hand swiping at the survivors.
Reaper barely dodged, the ground cratering where he once stood.
“FALL BACK!” Evelyn yelled.
But Hale stepped forward, unbothered.
He aid his rifle at the Maw, a smirk forming.
“Let show you real power.”
Power Unleashed
With a thunderous roar, Hale fired.
The plasma round pierced the Maw’s torso, igniting its insides.
The beast reeled, letting out an ear-shattering screech as tendrils flailed wildly.
“That’s right,” Hale sneered.
“Burn.”
But the Maw did not fall.
Instead, it mutated.
The black tendrils absorbed the plasma, its skin hardening into a chitinous exoskeleton.
The wounds sealed.
Then it laughed.
A deep, guttural, inhuman sound.
Hale’s grin vanished.
“Impossible…”
The Maw’s tendrils lashed out, impaling Hale through the shoulder, slamming him into a pillar.
Sparks flew from his damaged cybernetics.
“General Hale is down!” Mia shouted.
“RUN NOW!” Evelyn scread.
But Lucas…
He wasn’t running.
Sothing called to him.
The infection inside his brain whispered.
And he was listening.
As the Maw turned its burning gaze on him, Lucas smiled.
And he spoke in its language.
