"Bang!!"
The deafening gunshot echoed in the soundproofed living room. This ti, the bullet smoothly left the chamber, turning the young man’s upper body into a blood-red dahlia that almost covered two-thirds of the living room floor.
Sun Hang glanced at the middle-aged woman kneeling dumbfounded by the corpse and put away the handgun.
He was a man of clear grudges, Lu Hongming deserved to die, his son was an accomplice and deserved to die as well... As for his wife, that was none of Sun Hang’s business... When Lu Hongming’s cris over the years were exposed, soone would naturally deal with her.
Sun Hang never thought of acting for the greater good; he simply wanted personal revenge.
Just as Sun Hang was preparing to leave, the middle-aged woman suddenly lunged forward, pulling out a fruit knife from the fruit tray on the table, plunging it straight toward Sun Hang’s back!
The sharp fruit knife didn’t pierce Sun Hang’s body; instead, it bizarrely twisted around, severing the throat of the person holding it.
The next second, the fruit knife returned to its normal shape and fell from the middle-aged woman’s hand.
She clutched her bleeding throat, eyes wide, staggered backward a few steps, and then collapsed with a thud to the ground.
"That counts as a suicide." Sun Hang looked at the fruit knife with only the other person’s fingerprints on it, then at the woman on the brink of death, and said, "I don’t even have to write a self-defense statent, saves a hassle."
The middle-aged woman’s lips moved slightly; she seed to try to say sothing, but her severed throat obviously didn’t allow it. As her pupils gradually dilated, her body slumped beside her husband and son.
"The whole family together, quite nice."
After saying this, Sun Hang sniffed lightly.
He caught a special scent... the scent of a mysterious entity.
This scent had just appeared.
What surprised Sun Hang was that this scent didn’t co from the study but from another bedroom.
Stepping over the bodies on the floor, walking on the sticky blood, Sun Hang reached the bedroom door and pushed it open.
In the corner of the bedroom, a trembling young woman was huddled. Sun Hang glanced at the wedding photo hanging on the wall and instantly understood the woman’s identity.
She was Lu Hongming’s daughter-in-law, the young man’s wife who had opened the door for him.
"Are you infected?" Sun Hang did not approach but stood at the door and asked.
The woman stopped trembling, slowly lifted her head, her vacant eyes looking at Sun Hang.
Sun Hang initially thought the woman’s situation might be similar to Chen Hongjuan’s, where extre fear transford into a mysterious entity’s , turning her from a normal person into an infected one. Yet when Sun Hang tried to probe her emotions, he found no shadows representing negative emotions behind her.
Just like Ling Xiao.
"Why did you co back?" The young woman spoke, her tone calm.
"Anna?" Sun Hang suddenly realized.
"I went through so much to send you away from this dangerous place, why did you co back?" the young woman said again, "My dear... mother."
"Isn’t the Surrendered Area more dangerous than Celestial City?" Sun Hang couldn’t help but retort.
"No, there, you’ll be very safe, you won’t be hard." The young woman shook her head, "You shouldn’t have co back, at least not now."
Sun Hang suddenly rembered the eting still waiting for him and imdiately asked, "What’s going on with the complete lockdown of Celestial City? Is it your doing?"
"Not ." The young woman shook her head again, "But I sent you away because of that reason."
"What exactly happened?"
"You’ll soon realize, I was right... Mother, you really shouldn’t have co back." After finishing this sentence, the young woman suddenly vomited a large mouthful of blood, then with a tilt of her head, ceased to breathe.
Just as Sun Hang was about to approach for a check, the young woman’s entire body lted away like it was imrsed in a highly corrosive solution, turning into a pool of blood. The blood-soaked ho attire fell to the ground, stained red-black by the blood.
A charred sll drifted from outside. Sun Hang ran out to see that Lu Hongming’s study had completely turned to charcoal, yet the fire showed no signs of "crossing boundaries," even the highly flammable plush carpet at the entrance of the study remained untouched.
Lu Hongming failed to promptly dispose of the package and letter, but Anna completed the cleanup for him.
"Damn, fortunately Mr. Pei still trusts , otherwise it would’ve been a hassle to explain." Sun Hang rubbed the bloodstains from his boot soles on the carpet, retreated outside, and called Pei Zongjun.
Back in the car, Wang Xiyi gave Sun Hang a look, reached out to wipe a smudge of blood from his face, and frowned, "Why did it take so long? I thought you could solve it in a minute."
"A little accident occurred." Sun Hang said, "Lu Hongming had so contact with the mysterious entity, and that guy left sothing in his house."
"Mysterious entity?" Wang Xiyi was stunned but then nodded understandingly, "Makes sense, with your constitution, regular hypnotic drugs wouldn’t work... Only help from a mysterious entity... Wait a minute, the ’person’ you ntioned blackmailing Lu Hongming before, was it a mysterious entity?"
"Sort of." Sun Hang nodded, starting the car.
"No injuries, right?"
"Not quite, the mysterious entity just borrowed Lu Hongming’s daughter-in-law’s body and said a few words to ."
"What did she say to you?"
"She said I shouldn’t have co back." Sun Hang frowned, "Maybe it has sothing to do with the reasons for the city’s lockdown."
"Shouldn’t have co back?" Wang Xiyi also fell into confusion, "Why does it sound so strange... It’s like soone who cares about you is scolding you for doing sothing dangerous... No wait, they obviously want to kill you, strange, why do I think this way?"
Sun Hang looked at Wang Xiyi surprisingly—couldn’t deny that won’s intuition was indeed terrifying.
With just that sentence, without Sun Hang describing the other’s tone, Wang Xiyi could detect so much subtext...
If Wang Xiyi found out about Anna’s existence, what would she think?
Sun Hang wasn’t deliberately trying to hide it from them; he was just worried if one day Anna "offended" the Three Monkeys, the Three Monkeys might remove everyone aware of Anna’s existence... If that day really ca, then the fewer people who knew about Anna, the better.
The Three Monkeys wouldn’t directly eliminate Sun Hang, but for those around him, they probably wouldn’t show any rcy.
"Let’s go, back to the research institute." Sun Hang hit the accelerator, "If we’re late, Mr. Yang would probably start to lose his temper."
...
...
Like the entrances and exits of Celestial City, the outside of the Mysterious Creature Research Institute was also beefed up with a lot of security forces—just at the entrance of the institute sat a dozen armored vehicles painted in city camouflage, and dozens of engineers were setting up barricades with the help of exoskeletons. A nearly fifty-ter-high steel structure tower was being erected in the open space in front of the main building, with three drones cautiously carrying the materials needed for the tower top.
"All this setup... are they preparing for a street battle?" Sun Hang rolled down the car window, looked at the scene, and couldn’t help but comnt.
"These troops aren’t from the native forces of Celestial City." The sharp-eyed Wang Xiyi said, "Look at their arm patches and the unit insignia on the vehicles, they’re reinforcents from a neighboring region, and they’re all from main corps... Last ti when Eternal Night descended, the troops coming to reinforce Celestial City weren’t this many."
