After a mont, Mrs. Feng prepared dinner and looked after Grandma Wave, and Mrs. Li took the initiative to help her to the room in the back courtyard to rest.
Having exhausted herself all day, the old lady was tired, sitting on the bed still talking, nodding off sleepily.
Helplessly, Vera Wave gently helped her lie down and covered her with a thin blanket, while Mrs. Li spoke softly beside her.
"Miss Vera, I’ll watch over Grandma. You should go and talk to Mr. Cooper. A couple shouldn’t hold overnight grudges. Let it last overnight, and it might leave a knot in the heart later."
Thanking her, Vera walked out of the room and sat down in the corridor.
At this ti, the rain had gradually cald, yet the sky remained overcast, with no stars or moon in sight.
She sat in the corridor, surrounded by silence.
She heard footsteps and hastily turned her head. The approaching person wasn’t Kris Cooper but rather Mrs. Feng carrying a bowl of hot soup.
"The weather’s chilly, have so hot soup, don’t catch a cold."
"Serve him a bowl too."
"I took it to him, but the gentleman didn’t even look."
Vera pressed her lips together, "It’s late, get so sleep early. Sorry for causing trouble today."
Mrs. Feng sighed and turned back to her room.
Their situation was unknown to others, so it was naturally difficult for them to ddle.
Night deepened.
Vera sat in the corridor, feeling the cold gradually seep through her thin clothes, unable to suppress a sneeze.
If she felt this cold, he must feel worse in his damp clothes.
Ultimately unable to override her concern, she rose and went into the bedroom, pulling out a thin blanket, and headed to the front courtyard.
From a distance, she saw him still sitting there, holding a cigarette between his fingers, his short hair now half-dry, tousled, and his clothes wrinkled and clinging to his body.
The dim yellow light of the wall lamp cast the man’s shadow on the ground, lonely enough to tug at the heartstrings.
Her heart clenched, Vera took a deep breath, and walked over, holding the blanket in her hand, offering it to him.
Kris Cooper raised his face, glanced at her, and flicked away the newly-lit cigarette without reaching for her blanket.
As the wind blew, Vera shivered uncontrollably. Catching her small movent, he frowned tightly.
Was she a fool? She had clothes, yet didn’t think to wear more in such cold weather.
If she felt this cold in dry clothes, surely he was colder in wet ones.
Looking at the man’s deanor, Vera bit her lip, unable to stop herself from stepping forward to drape the blanket over him.
"Please, won’t you co inside?"
"Then you would leave, right?" he asked, looking up.
She bit her lip, silent.
Suddenly, the man stood up, the blanket falling to the ground, ignored, as he looked down at her, voice rising sharply.
"Speak!"
Clearly still caring for him, clearly unwilling to leave him... why was she insistent on leaving, Kris Cooper couldn’t understand!
"Please, let go."
She lowered her face, speaking softly.
"A reason!"
"I don’t want to say."
"Then don’t even think about leaving this courtyard."
"You... you’re always like this!" Vera raised her face, shouting in anger and pain, "This world isn’t yours to dictate, loving isn’t what you aim for, why should I stay?"
As soon as she finished speaking, her wrist was tightly gripped by him.
