At the ti of the incident, no fourth person was present, and the dilapidated building lacked any surveillance devices. With no other evidence or witnesses, the judge definitely wouldn’t be convinced by Vera’s word alone.

"So what do we do now?" Vera asked, furrowing her brow.

Lucille stepped forward and comfortingly placed a hand on her shoulder. "I rushed over specifically to ask about the circumstances at the ti and to see if there’s any evidence that might be helpful for Kris."

"Okay! Let’s go upstairs to talk!"

Vera led Lucille upstairs into the study room, where they both sat down. Vera began to recount the details of the incident carefully. Lucille listened attentively, holding a notebook and pen, occasionally jotting down notes.

When Vera paused, Lucille looked up.

"So, you’re saying there was indeed a conflict between Kris and Liliana Davis?"

"Yes. I don’t know exactly what happened. At the ti, Aunt Liliana said she was going to tell sothing. Kris didn’t want her to say it, so he pulled her away. She was thrown off balance and landed on the floorboards. She then said she wanted to call the police. After that, the floorboards cracked, and she fell through..."

Lucille was about to ask another question when her phone rang.

The caller was Michael Freenan, reporting the results of the autopsy.

"The victim’s face showed signs of having been struck. She also had so abrasions and injuries consistent with a fall. Beyond that, there were no other wounds and no indications of drug use."

"Okay, I understand," Lucille said as she hung up the phone.

Vera reached out and grasped Lucille’s arm. "Aunt Lucille, please, can you think of a way to get Kris out?"

"Vera, I understand how you feel, but I cannot override the law."

"Then... is there no other way?"

Lucille thought for a mont. "It’s not that there isn’t a way, but... it’s very difficult."

Vera imdiately asked, "What way is it?"

"As far as I know, you and Nathan Leafcastle were once good friends. If you could persuade him to drop the lawsuit, then this case wouldn’t need to be filed, and it wouldn’t have to go through court proceedings." Lucille gently placed a hand on Vera’s shoulder. "If that happens, things would be much simpler."

"This..." Vera bit her lip. "I... I’ll go and try."

"You must do it as soon as possible. Otherwise, once the case is officially filed, there’s nothing I can do," Lucille said.

Vera nodded. Lucille then rose from the sofa.

"I’ll go and take another look at the scene of the incident," Lucille said, offering Vera a comforting smile. "It’s getting late. You should eat sothing, and try not to worry too much. As long as Kris is innocent, the law will surely bring him justice."

"He is innocent! He didn’t kill anyone! Aunt Lucille, you have to believe him! I really saw it with my own eyes—he didn’t kill anyone."

Lucille nodded solemnly.

She stepped forward and gently hugged Vera. "I believe you," she said. "Don’t worry. I’ll do everything I can to help him."

Without even touching her tea, Lucille hurried away to inspect the scene of the incident. With Kris Cooper’s fate at stake, Lucille was fully committed, determined to handle everything personally.

After Vera saw Lucille off, Tommy Taylor brought over dinner and placed it on the dining table.

"Miss Vera, please eat sothing!"

Looking at the food on the table, and thinking of Kris still alone in the detention center, Vera couldn’t swallow a bite.

"Do Mom and Dad know?"

"They called. Their flight is at dawn."
