"Yes."
Tommy Taylor responded and hung up.
「Restaurant.」
Vera Wave was biting into a roast duck roll.
Across from her, Isla Hawskin frowned at the way she was eating.
"Can you say sothing? Why... why is this happening?"
Wiping the corner of her mouth with a napkin, Vera picked up another pancake and continued to wrap a second piece of duck at.
"It’s not..." Isla ran a hand through her hair. "Vera, are you trying to drive crazy?"
"No particular reason. If we don’t want to be together, then we break up," Vera said nonchalantly.
"Stop ssing with ." Isla stood up, pulling her chair closer to Vera’s side. "Did he cheat on you?"
"No."
"Then..." Isla considered for a mont. "Did his family mistreat you?"
"No."
"Then I just don’t get it! You could be living comfortably as a young socialite, so why are you acting so crazy?!"
Vera didn’t say anything and continued eating her roast duck.
"Then..." Isla moved closer again. "What about the baby?"
"I’ll give birth."
"And after you give birth?"
"I’ll raise it!"
"You..." Isla leaned back against the chair helplessly. "You’re insane. Do you know how hard it is for a single woman to raise a child? Giving birth costs money, raising a child costs money... Let’s not even talk about other things, just baby formula. Do you know how much a can of imported formula costs these days?!"
Vera swallowed the at in her mouth. "Then I’ll have to find a way to earn money."
"That’s not the point..." Isla frowned, her face a mask of exasperation. Without fully raising her hand, she poked Vera’s forehead. "What on earth is going on in that head of yours? My friends and I try every single day to find a rich heir, and we can’t even get close! Then there’s you. You get the opportunity for a life of luxury, served to you on a silver platter, and you refuse it! You don’t want the big villa; you’d rather stay in this dumpy hotel."
Vera looked up. "Now that you ntion it, if you hear of a suitable place, rember to let know."
Isla dramatically slumped onto the table. "I’m really at my wit’s end with you, Vera."
On the table, Vera’s phone rang.
Looking at the caller ID – Bailey Hansen – Vera ignored it and just took a large bite of the roast duck in her hand.
The phone rang for a long ti, then finally stopped.
A short while later, the phone rang again. This ti, the caller ID showed Kate Palr.
Vera hesitated for a mont before answering.
"If you’re also calling to persuade , then don’t bother."
"I’m not calling to persuade you," Kate’s tone was fairly calm. "I’m calling about a business matter. You previously signed a two-year endorsent contract with the company. Our new project is about to launch, and we need you for a promotional photoshoot."
Vera hesitated, remaining silent.
"You know about this project, and... the contract clearly states your obligation. Are you... planning to breach it?"
Vera inhaled lightly. "Director Palr, given my current situation, do you still think I’m suitable to be the company’s spokesperson?"
"I can’t say for sure. However, I am absolutely certain about one thing: if you don’t co, the company’s project will be significantly impacted."
Vera pursed her lips.
"When is the shoot?"
"Tomorrow afternoon."
"Okay, I’ll be there."
After hanging up, Vera stuffed the duck at she was holding into her mouth all at once.
Isla sighed. "There’s a one-bedroom apartnt upstairs from , $1600 a month. It’s pretty decent. If you’re interested, I can ask about it for you?"
"No need to ask, I’ll take it," Vera said, wiping her fingers. "Ask her now. I’ll move in tomorrow morning."
