Because the mont the fight began, Mind's Eye of Kagura imdiately revealed the truth. Rei knew the truth even if he didn't have that ability before but seeing it through his Mind's eye was a different story altogether.
The chakra wasn't inside the person running toward him. The chakra was behind him. Inside the wrapped object. Rei almost laughed. This guy really thought he was clever.
Kankuro anwhile was already smirking internally. Most opponents focused on him. Then the puppet would surprise them and at the end the surprise would be too much for anyone to fight back. Deception at it's peak.
Unfortunately for him, Rei wasn't most opponents.
The fake Kankuro threw several kunai imdiately while rushing closer. Rei didn't even dodge.
Shunshin no Jutsu.
The entire audience blinked. The kunai struck nothing. Kankuro's body froze in disbelief. Rei had suddenly appeared ten ters away.
"...Fast." Temari muttered.
Gaara remained silent. anwhile Kankuro imdiately altered tactics. The wrapped puppet behind him moved a small bit. Strings stretched through the air. The fake body suddenly opened its mouth and launched poisoned senbon.
Only for Rei to disappear again.
Shunshin.
Multiple tis at that. Every attack missed. The spectators slowly began noticing sothing strange. Rei wasn't attacking at all. Kankuro wasn't fast in attacking, in fact when he changed the tactics, he had even given Rei ti to counter attack, but Rei was just pure defending.
The fake Kankuro launched another attack while the wrapped figure shifted position. Rei's eyes followed neither. Instead he watched the chakra threads, as his mind's eye could almost anticipate what was coming. Then Rei suddenly spoke.
"You know... for a puppet pretending to be a person, you're doing a decent job."
What followed was a complete silence. Temari and Kankuro froze, and even Gaara was surprised.
Only Kankuro understood imdiately. He had been discovered, but how?
"...I don't know what you're talking about."
"Sure."
Doton: Doryū Taiga [Earth Release: Earth Flow River]
The ground suddenly transford into flowing mud. The fake Kankuro lost balance instantly. At the sa ti Rei vanished.
Shunshin.
The wrapped figure jumped backward. Exactly as Rei expected.
BOOOOM.
A punch struck where it had been standing monts earlier. The wraps cracked and the audience gasped. Because Rei hadn't attacked Kankuro at all. He had attacked the wrapped object.
"...What the hell?" Sakura whispered.
Now everyone finally understood. The real body was behind. The thing in front was a puppet. Kankuro cursed internally. His biggest advantage had disappeared. And now the fight beca significantly harder. The puppet imdiately opened its torso.
Hidden blades.
Poison needles.
chanical traps.
Everything activated simultaneously. The entire arena beca a death zone. Most genins would've surrendered imdiately. Rei simply moved.
Shunshin.
One mont he was on the left. The next on the right. He was all over the place, moving so fast that so of them couldn't even keep up with his speed. Even the proctor, Hayate coughed a bit just seeing the speed of Rei.
Guy slowly lowered his smile.
"...Kakashi."
"Hm?"
"Your student is absurdly fast."
"Yeah, I noticed that." Kakashi said. This guy had so many techniques, but he seed to be practicing two things repeatedly every day. Shunshin and Funinjutsu. Kakashi had already known what Hokage had given him but for soone as young as him to obsessed with speed was a bit weird.
But he could also understand. Speed would mostly reign supre, unless sothing more powerful ca in the picture, but more often than not, speed would win at the end. Rei was following his own path and he didn't need to interfere at all.
Maybe soday, this guy would give him advices.
anwhile Kankuro was beginning to sweat. Nothing worked. Every trap missed and every attack failed. Worst of all, Rei wasn't even using fancy techniques.
Only speed.
But after dodging for so ti Rei was bored of it and did hand signs.
Suiton: Suigadan [Water Style: Water Fang Projectile]
Several compressed spikes of water shot forward. The puppet blocked them and instantly Kankuro realized that it was bad idea. The wood cracked and one arm shattered.
Kankuro felt his heart break. His puppet. His precious puppet. Calm down bro! You aren't Gollum.
Rei however wasn't finished.
Doton: Doryūsō [Earth Release: Earth Spear Pillars]
Stone spikes erupted beneath the puppet. One leg exploded apart and the body stumbled. Then ca the worst part.
Rei smiled.
"Oh. It's breaking."
Kankuro genuinely wanted to punch him. Instead he launched every remaining weapon simultaneously.
Poison bombs.
Blades.
Needles.
Hidden compartnts.
The entire puppet practically exploded into a barrage of attacks. Rei rushed straight through them. He didn't even need his Sharingan to escape such attacks. If he needed that, then probably Zabuza would co for his head knowing that Rei needed Sharingan for such kind of flimsy attacks.
Shunshin.
The distance vanished instantly. Kankuro's eyes widened. Before he could even register, a kick struck the puppet's chest.
CRACK.
Wood splintered and that followed by another strike.
CRACK.
An arm flew away and then another.
CRACK.
The head shattered. At this point the puppet no longer resembled a puppet, it resembled broken clay scattered across the arena floor. Silence consud the stadium.
Kankuro stared at years of work reduced to debris. His soul left his body slightly. Then he felt cold tal touch his neck.
A kunai.
Rei stood behind him. The kunai rested calmly against his throat.
"Yield?"
Kankuro swallowed very slowly. When he first t Rei on that street he thought that this guy just had raw strength. He was wrong. This guy was faster than he had imagined him to be, even Gaara wasn't that fast. What the hell was wrong with this guy?
"...I yield."
The arena erupted afterward. Because the fight had ended so decisively that most people still hadn't processed what they had witnessed. Rei was never in a disadvantage position ever. anwhile above, Gaara continued staring at Rei. Because now he wanted that fight even more.
"Winner Rei Amagi."
The sound and the sand ninjas gulped down their throats. Even Orochimaru was stunned. Not because he was impressed by his speed but because, when there was the confrontation between them, Rei never showed he was this much good in that simple Shunshin.
He had been hiding the entire and just used barrage of attacks on him which was all chakra based. This kid! What was he and how co he didn't know any of this.
Besides, he noticed another matter. Kakashi was more relaxed when it ca to Rei. It was very subtle but he, as an old Sanin noticed it. It was as if Kakashi had absolute confidence on Rei. Wasn't it supposed to be Sasuke? How was he so sure about Rei?
"Has Rei always been this cool?" Ino asked.
"Oh! You have no idea." Sakura said proudly. Ino really didn't have any idea how powerful Rei was, in fact all of Konoha didn't know either. If he really took the battle seriously one slap would probably be enough to finish it.
But sadly she could never speak those words to anyone unless she got the permission of Rei, which she didn't think she ever will. But that was fine. Rei was their trump card and their team would soon produce a chunin among them.
Next fight also followed slightly far from the canon. This was Ino vs Sakura and Sakura actually won at the end. She was after all much stronger than the original supposed Sakura as Rei had taught her dical techniques, and though it wasn't helpful in the fight it did help her in better control with faster and better ninja techniques.
Next was between, Temari and Tenten and sadly Tenten lost at the end.
Followed by Shikamaru's fight which he won. Well of course, he won. He was lazy not incapable of doing sothing great, after all he did go on to beco the Hokage at the end.
The next fight was between Naruto and Kiba and that also followed the canon, though Naruto was in a better spot this ti and won it in a much easier fashion.
This was followed by Neji and Hinata. That went as well that could be expected. This guy had all the reasons to be angry about his living conditions but dumping on to soone who you always knew was weak was kind of low, bro.
As soon as the fight ended, Naruto ca running forward and was beyond angry of how Neji was treating Hinata. Neji declared that a failure was always a failure and Naruto just lost it, and went in for the punch.
But it was Rei at the end who ca forward and stopped Naruto instead of Lee, like in the canon.
"It's okay Naruto, there is no point in losing head at this ego maniac. You will get to fight him soon." Rei said.
"Rei.." Naruto murmured.
"Ego maniac? That is rich coming from nobody.." Neji said and Rei just looked at him like so kind of clown dancing in front of him. Neji really was a pretending asshole in the start.
