Now reading: The Wet-Work Squad from Infinite Evolution: The Prodigy Beyond Limits, a Action novel by AetherNova.

The massive violet crystal of the Rift Nexus Core began to spiderweb with deep, jagged fractures as its ancestral mana was systematically reeved from its shell. The bubbling magma lake surrounding the platform turned a dull, matte gray, cooling into solid stone within seconds as the thermal energy anchor vanished straight into Kai’s right palm.

Kai slowly pulled his hand away from the now-lifeless, brittle stone pillar. The sheer volu of energy humming inside his mana circuits was intoxicating. His skin pricked with micro-currents of purple static, and his perception of the surrounding space had sharpened to an almost painful degree. He could feel the macro-vibrations of the upper caverns collapsing, the frantic movents of low-level monsters fleeing the decaying rift, and the far-off spatial signatures of the academy's transit gates failing.

The entire Obsidian Jagged Crags dungeon was dying, turning into a hollow pocket dinsion that would soon snap out of existence.

"Marcus wanted an accident," Kai said, a low, cold chuckle vibrating in his chest as he shook the remaining stone dust from his fingers. "He’s about to get exactly what he signed for."

Before he could pull up his interface to allocate his massive influx of Evolution Points, his SSS-Rank talent pulsed sharply at the base of his skull—a violent, localized threat warning.

From the shadows of the collapsing cavern ceiling, three distinct spatial distortions tore open. These weren't the erratic, jagged rifts of natural dungeon anomalies. They were smooth, calculated, and perfectly circular portals stabilized by high-tier modern magic.

Three figures stepped through the portals, dropping soundlessly onto the cooling slag of the dead magma lake.

They wore matching, heavy cloaks of deep crimson leather reinforced with enchanted iron thread—the elite field uniform of the Vanguard Enforcent Unit's internal wet-work squad. Their faces were obscured by dark, tallic masks molded into the likeness of snarling wolves.

[Entity: Enforcent Executioner - Alpha Team]

Rank: D-Rank Awakened (Level 18)

HP: 750 / 750

Primary Class: Iron Executioner (Tier 1)

Danger Level: High.

Three Level 18 awakened hunters. Under imperial law, the Vanguard Enforcent Unit was only deployed to suppress high-threat rogue hunters or wipe out dangerous mutant outposts. Marcus Vance hadn't just stacked the deck with dungeon hazards; he had sent his own personal death squad into the restricted zone to ensure that even if Kai sohow survived the Magma Golem, he would never walk out of the rift alive.

The leader of the trio looked around the darkening cavern, his eyes lingering on the shattered remains of the D-Rank Golem boss and the dead, fractured Rift Core. A sharp, muffled intake of breath echoed behind his tallic wolf mask.

"The core is gone," the leader muttered, his voice artificially distorted by the runes in his collar. His gaze snapped toward Kai, locked onto the pristine black alloy of the Desolation Blade. "The target is an unauthorized anomalous entity. He has consud the imperial rift anchor. The original directive to stage an accident is void. Execute imdiately with maximum kinetic force."

The two executioners flanking the leader didn't hesitate. They didn't draw standard student swords. The hunter on the left unclasped a heavy, runic warhamr from his back, his mana flaring with a muddy brown light that signified an advanced Earth-attribute class. The hunter on the right blurred, his form dissolving into a faint, smoky shadow as his Tier-1 Shadow Blade class skills activated.

They were professional killers, moving with zero wasted dialogue or dramatic flair.

[System Notice]

Host is targeted by an organized awakened party.

Innate Skill 'Void Shroud' active: True status remains masked. Enemies perceive Host as an unawakened F-Rank baseline.

Kai didn't retreat. He stood beneath the falling debris of the ceiling, his thumb gently nudging the guard of his blade. "Three Level 18s. Marcus truly is a cautious man."

The earth-attribute executioner closed the distance first, leaping high into the air as his warhamr expanded with a massive, localized aura of compacted rock. Seismic Fracture. The strike was designed to flatten a front-line tank, carrying the full weight of a Level 18 Strength stat.

Kai didn't parry the hamr. He knew the limitations of his current armor rating against heavy bludgeoning weapons.

Instead, he activated his mobility gear with a thought.

Aero-Glide.

The azure lightning on his Tempest Stride boots detonated outward. Kai blurred diagonally, his body moving so fast across the slick volcanic stone that he left a trail of displaced ash in his wake. The warhamr smashed violently into the floor where he had stood a microsecond prior, completely detonating the cooling slag into a crater of flying stone shards.

But Kai’s counter-trajectory was already locked.

As he glided past the overextended hamr-wielder, the shadow-attribute executioner materialized directly from the darkness of his blind spot, twin obsidian daggers driving toward Kai's throat with a lightning-fast Throat-Slit skill sequence.

"I see you," Kai whispered.

His SSS-Rank talent had tracked the shadow mana particles shifting in the air before the daggers could even cross the half-way mark. With his effective Agility now bolstered by his recent level-up, Kai’s reflexes operated on a plane of pure, hyper-accelerated instinct.

He didn't swing the blade. He lifted his left leg, driving the steel-plated heel of his Tempest Stride boot straight into the shadow assassin's sternum with a raw, brutal front kick.

BANG!

The pure physical force of Kai’s Strength stat—amplified by the kinetic discharge of his boots—slamd into the assassin's chest armor like a descending battering ram. The reinforced leather plates cracked instantly. The assassin let out a wet, choked gasp as he was launched backward across the cavern, his body bouncing violently off the stone floor before crashing into the ruined base of the dead Rift Core.

[Target Status]

HP: 420 / 750 (Internal Hemorrhage - Fractured Sternum)

"What kind of unawakened physical density is this?!" the squad leader roared, his calm professionalism finally fracturing as he drew a heavy, broad-bladed greatsword that crackled with violent, arc-lightning mana.

He didn't wait for his team to regroup. He lunged forward, executing a Tier-1 Vanguard skill: Lightning Cleave. A massive, crescent wave of volatile electricity tore out from his sword, wide enough to deny Kai any lateral room to glide.

The air inside the cave grew white-hot, the electric static threatening to paralyze Kai's muscles before the physical blade could even arrive.

Kai’s violet eyes narrowed. He gripped the hilt of the Desolation Blade with both hands, his body shifting into the compressed, core-locked stance Elena had beaten into him during their private session. He didn't look at the electricity; he looked at the central focal point where the leader's greatsword t the hilt—the absolute chanical nexus of the swing.

"Elena's lesson," Kai muttered softly.

He thrust forward.

It wasn't a wide, sweeping arc ant to contest the lightning. It was a single, hyper-concentrated three-inch thrust driven by thirty-seven points of raw, unadulterated Strength and thirty-six points of hyper-accelerated Agility. The obsidian tip of the Desolation Blade pierced straight through the center of the roaring electric crescent, hitting the flat of the leader's greatsword with the force of an armored kinetic projectile.

CRACK-SHATTER!

The sheer, compressed velocity of the impact didn't just parry the strike—it physically shattered the enchanted steel of the Level 18 executioner's greatsword into a dozen flying tal fragnts. The lightning wave dissolved into harmless sparks, and the squad leader was thrown entirely off balance, his grip ripped open as his hands bled from the sheer kinetic recoil.

The leader stumbled backward, his tallic mask slipping slightly to reveal a face pale with absolute, paralyzing horror. "Monster... You're not an F-Rank. You're not even unawakened..."

Kai stepped through the fading sparks, the black blade of his sword perfectly still, its edge completely undamaged by the collision. His violet eyes locked onto the terrified eyes of the executioner behind the mask.

"Tell Marcus," Kai said, his voice entirely flat as he raised the blade for a clean, short-range execution arc, "that I appreciate the harvest."

The cavern roof finally gave way, a massive boulder crashing down to separate them as Kai lunged forward into the dark, ready to finalize the slaughter.
